Guest guest
Hi. I'm so sorry you want to leave. I wish I could help. I, too, have a young child with severe communication problems and am here to learn and hopefully gain support from the other parents. I believe if someone can help, they will. Also, I find that I can search the messages and sometimes find an answer to one of my questions. I hope you change your mind. God bless. Guest guest
You know, I'm not sure what your post was, but often times we all have our favorite topics to respond to because we're more knowledgeable in those areas and we don't want to answer somethign we may not know about. Some are there to cheerlead just about anything. I tend to stick with my areas of expertese as well, and ignore much of the rest or the touchy feely stff as I do not ahve time and others are better at it. So what can i tell you, we all do our best. Other times we may just be real busy with our special needs children therapies and researcha nd doctors appointments so weeks may go by and we don't ahve time to read the list or read only the topics we've posted on to see if there are any replies. Lidsats have different fucntions at different times and we're all here to learn and help each other. if you do not believe this, it is you and your child who will not stand to benefit from any list. And some may even be on vacation as it's summer. I would not have this attitude if I were you because it is in your child's best interest for you to be to be open minded and give other parents the benefit of the doubt if you want to receive advise, suggestions etc. So given that we're all here for the same reasons, if some posts fall through the cracks, just re post--two or 3 different times--different ways, maybe it will help others notice it and see what suggestions they might have. As I said we are all very busy and many are on several different lists trying to help our children and the " poor me " attitude is not helpful anywhere, not with the doctors, not with the therapists, not with the insurance and not with the school districts and certainly not when you're new on a list. Later you might be able to get away with it as people get to know you and offer a shoulder to cry on once they recognize your posts, but in the beginning you need to be more patient.  We do the best we can to help each other, but many times are overwhelmed or just don't get to do it for what ever reason. Life is hard and you do not need to make it any harder on your self by excluding yourself from a list you could potentially learn from. Every resource is helpful when dealing with a disabled child or any really importnat issue for that matter. And if after being here for a while and trying to request help in a few ways and you still can't get any advise--for waht ever reason--try a " PLEASE HELP " in the subject line --and that usually does it--there are always a few of us who no matter how busy will take the time for something like that. So anyway, having been on many lists and sometimes feeling like I too was ignored as a new commer and my question was either briefly answered or just not really answered at all by any body, I realized that any list is a community and some people know each other and are very active, newcommers have to be a little more patient and not take things personally or they will never really get anywhere. You are here for your child, as we all are. Good luck and you may want to try the approach I suggested if you really want some suggestions from members of this list or any other for that matter.. really, being hypersensitive will not help at all and your child needs your help very much... Guest guest
*OR* other parents here could very well be extremely busy and unable to get to your emails for a response. Not to make light of your situation, but EVERYONE HERE has a child with severe issues communicating, and that is why we are all here. I cannot speak for everyone, but only myself--- and personally speaking, I don't only have ONE special needs child going through issues, but I have T HREE special needs children with whom I deal with. Add to that fact, I have 8 children altogether, I home school (year round) and have therapy schedules for 3 kids that would make a grown man weak in the knees to think about-- etc you get the picture, I am sure. I am saying this in a gentle tone-- and wishing that I was able to get here more often to help you, because I hear your frustration and I UNDERSTAND your frustration. All of us have been there at one time or another. Please give us all a little grace, because we TRULY DO WANT TO HELP, but sometimes are unable to give a list the attention that we need to give our own situations at home. I've been here a while now and everyone really does want to help. My suggestion is to RE-post your question and we'll try our best to answer what we can Becky In a message dated 8/4/2009 8:27:16 P.M. Guest guest
Yes, blood serotonin level or plasma serotonin level. The serotonin made in the brain is made separately from the blood serotonin, but both depend on the body getting and transporting enough tryptophan (which crosses the blood brain barrier correctly). Blood serotonin level can be a good indication of whether the brain has enough serotonin, plus a level too low or too high is indicative of a problem on its own, such as malabsorption and maldigestion. I didn't know much about body chemistry when I asked that the test be done for my daughter. I may have gotten lucky, but autistics' serotonin levels are often too high or too low. Another highly informative test is an extended blood amino acid test. A pediatrician can order these, even if she/he has no experience with autism. A urinary check for exorphin peptides helps. A simple home indication could be whether or not a child's stool floats. If it does, fats are probably not getting fully digested: there may be a GI problem. Ah, the cost. I paid out of pocket. The blood tests (plus one for heavy metals) came to $300+. If I can get an MD to state that my daughter falls within the ASD range, I can get a tax deduction for the expenses.
