This happened long before the internet and before all this talk about iodine when iodine was a scary thing to consume internally. As a teenager, I had Graves Disease (overactive thyroid and goiter). At one point, my doctor decided to try having me consume ordinary topical iodine at 15 drops per day. I did that for 2 weeks. It did nothing for the disease but I lived through it. In those days, iodine came with a Skull and Crossbones on it. Scary. Just so you know, I finally had a very successful surgery (surprising, isn't it. Some times, medicine makes a mistake and 'cures' someone, not that I consider it a cure) and I have had no problems with it since, unlike so many others. So years later, I was helping out an old fellow prepare his meals, etc. He told me he had had ulcers a few years before. I asked what he did to get rid of it and he told me he used iodine. I couldn't believe it. I was thinking surgery. I wondered how he knew to use iodine. He said he used iodine for colds and flus, too. So I asked how he took it. He said he dropped 5 drops in a glass of water or milk and drank it on an empty stomach. Then he ate nothing for 30 minutes or so. He only did it once a day. This man was an alcholic and he didn't quit drinking either through the iodine treatment he gave himself. You have to understand that, at the time, there was no cure for ulcers. The whole thing was like a major miracle to me. His mother-in-law when she was about 89 years old, was scheduled for surgery to have 2/3 of her stomach removed for ulcers. When he told them about his iodine 'trick' as he called it, they tried it on her and she was able to cancel her surgery and never did have to have it. It wasn't until a couple of years later, that science discovered that ulcers was caused by some kind of bug or parasite that likes to live in the stomach. The iodine must have killed it.
