The department I worked in systematically got rid of

everyone who had health problems - whether or not they

missed work. I don't think it was company policy

though . . .

Eventuallly the company got rid of them too! Heh, heh,

heh!

Yes, and depending on the job you are doing, many have been able to

just take a week off for this surgery.

I was back to work within a week... I did not require a lift which may be an important factor..... I didn't have too hard of a time with it and mine were under the muscle - one was stuck and I was still at work a week later... a little sore but I made it through. I guess it depends on the extent needed of your surgery.... if a lift is required it may take a longer healing time... I am not sure.

Kenda - companies have changed ALOT in the last 16 years. I'm sure

there are still a few good places to work, but it's changed quite a

bit. Nowadays the attitude is more " be thankful you've got a job " ,

the companies have all the power and the workers don't have any. In

the 80's, it was different, but in the 90's it started getting cold

and now it's in a nuclear winter! Hopefully one day the pendulum

will swing back in the other direction.

I know this is a little off the tack you guys are taking with this,

but as a business owner and corporate officer, I have to say

something in defense of companies from an employer standpoint.

Especially in light of the year we just went through.

I probably had the same thoughts as all of you before I became a

business owner. When my husband I were both employees of someone

else, we always thought the owners/companies were filthy rich and

had it made. They just lived a much different lifestyle than we

could ever have hoped to, and we thought they were somehow

privileged.

Let me just say that I think companies are facing huge employee

problems. I don't think it is just us, either, but rather our

company is experiencing what many others are too; it is a reflection

of the times. Of course, we are a small business owner...we can't

be compared with these huge corporations traded on the stock market.

But, this year we had such horrendous problems with employee theft

that it boggles my mind. I can't tell you how devastating it can

be, both from an emotional standpoint (the feeling of betrayal) and

from a financial standpoint. And the employees smile at you while

they are doing it behind your back. Let me tell you, it makes you

very leary of trusting anyone, and of wanting to give, give, give

back to the employees. Add to that the huge bite we have to pay for

insurances and taxes, (workman's comp, unemployment, health

insurance, etc.) and then add the cases you get every now and then

with worker's comp fraud or bogus claims of discrimination, and

you've got a situation where you begin to wonder if it is worth it

all.

Theft takes many forms and all I want to say is that it can be so

drastic that it can almost take the business down completely. We

experienced that at one of our locations this year. Thankfully, we

are bouncing back, but...well, let me just say that the problems

will never end. Thiefs out there abound, and they know they can get

away with it. They are sneaky, they are devious and they are bold.

I just wanted to say that I know what you guys are feeling...I used

to think that corporations got away with murder all the time. And

maybe some of them do. But I also want to say from my own

experience that corporations are getting ripped off too, left and

right, front and center. It is a terrible, terrible thing. It

makes me very sad, because I want to love on our employees and treat

them like family. But so many of them are dishonest. My eyes have

been opened and I would have rather not seen this side of business.

Shari, Mine are under the muscle, I think Dr. Feng is going to go back in through my old scars (which are under the breast). My concern is that after my implants are gone and I am flat chested again, how much the line is going to show. Where are your scars? halvey70@... wrote: michelle I was back to work within a week... I work for a place called Petland selling pedigree puppies.

Unfortunatly we are not closed for any holidays except Christmas

day, and because I am retail and work for commision plus salery, I

just don't know if they would be very understanding. Add that I am

brand new to the team and I just have a bad feeling. I hate the

thought of waiting because I am still losing my hair and I really

don't want to get sick...and truthfully I am probably as mentally

ready as I can get at this point.

Anyhow I am also having second thoughts on using Dr Kolb, just

because I like the way Dr Melmeds results look better then hers. I

know she will get all the scar tissue and do a good job but I have

seen dr Melmed's work on some girls after pictures and I like the

end result better...am I wrong? I just haven't seen many people with

pictures of Dr Kolb's work and she didn't show me but 2 small sets

of pictures when I seen her for a consult.

I want to have the best end result because I have to live with it

for the rest of my life.My husband refuses to go through the implant

crap again so there is no going back. I know it is vein but I want

them to look pretty or at least the best they can.

I work for a franchise and I don't get any benefits as a full time

employee. I can totally see the point of veiw of the business,

however I would hope that good managment could see the seriousness

of a surgery...it isn't like I am having them (implants) put in LOL,

sorry I found that funny, anyhow, I am praying that if I ask I get

an honest response and hopfully a positive one, I would like to only

take a week off, I personally don't like the idea of starting a job

and then havign to be off work for a period of time, I hate dropping

the ball on my team.

Dear ,

I think they should be understanding. I know when we have employees

with personal issues, we do our best to work with them. We are a

franchise as well.

When I was working and needed to take time off for my explant, I

just told them I needed to have surgery and they were very

understanding. I do remember feeling under the gun when they asked

me what it was for and if it was serious, and I just told them I was

too upset to talk about it. They seemed to respect that. I got my

2 weeks off without a problem. I remember the supervisor sitting

down with me once and doing a little more prodding when I came back,

but I just maintained that it was too upsetting to discuss at that

time. I didn't really feel much like talking about it as I was

really reeling from the whole thing. It was very distressing to me

then. I had my implants for only 9 months, and I had been told they

would last me a lifetime. I think I had told only one other person

there, and maybe it got back to her. I don't know, but they never

discussed it again with me, and seemed to be understanding.

Hopefully your employer will view this as an unforeseen event in

your life and that you just need to have surgery, get it done and

over with. They should be understanding. Nobody really enjoys

going through surgery, so hopefully you can leave them with this

idea and that you will do your best to get back on the team when you

are able.

I know how you feel, really I do!

Hugs,

Patty

I would say to trust your instincts, not every employer is as

understanding as Patty's was. I know people who were fired for just

this type of thing, so you have to go with your gut feeling. Some

employers would be understanding, some would not.

My husband is a small business owner, so I can relate to what you're

saying. I also have a friend who owns a deli and she has had a

terrible problem with theft. I think there are probably different

sets of issues between small businesses and large corporations -

although there are probably some similar ones as well. I know with

my husband and my friend, the workers tend to be more transient, and

aren't looking for a lifetime career. Having worked in a corporate

environment for my entire career, we pretty much towed the line

because we wanted to be there for a lifetime so we could collect a

pension. However (and this is speaking only from a large

corporation perspective) when the company was loyal to us, we were

very happy. When things started to change and we were living in an

environment of constant downsizings, it was very hard to be loyal.

We didn't steal from the company, we just didn't care because the

axe kept falling around us. I have no personal experience with a

small business other than what I hear my husband talk about, and

from what I hear, in a small business it really is hard to get good

help, and you really do have to be careful (he's been ripped off,

too).

It doesn't sound as though your job is physically

demanding . . . Unless you are lifting cages or large

dogs. You will probably be able to work in a very

short time, as long as you are resting when you're not

at work. I'd suggest telling your management that

you're having surgery and that, while you can work,

you may need to take an occasional break, and avoid

lifting for a while.

I can't tell you how many women say they've gone

shopping at the mall the day after their surgery. . .

drains and all!

If your job is mainly walking about and talking to

people, you should be able to work very soon.

Hugs and prayers,

Rogene

Sis,

I think you hit the nail on the head when you talk

about the change in company cultures when the

employees no longer felt loyalty from the employers

towards them.

I saw it at Texas Instruments many years ago . . . At

one time, TI would shift people all over the company

to keep employees on the payroll . . . People would

work countless unpaid hours to support " their "

company. At one time TI's slogan was " People are our

most important business " - People meaning employees!

That spirit is long gone!

Gradually the culture changed until both employees and

companies feel it's " everyone is responsible for

themselves " . . . Even good businesses (as I'm sure

Patty and her husband have), now have to deal with

people who feel burned by former employers - or who

grow up in a family affected by such companies. Where

is it going to end? . . . I shudder to think! My

ex-husband worked for a still existing, national

company for 40 years that managed to dump his already

paultry retirement plan onto the feds where he gets

pennies on the dollar!

It's not going to end when this country turns a blind

eye to the importation to cheap Mexican labor . . .

The idea that Americans won't do the job is BS! . . .

Where I live (Arkansas), we seldom see Hispanic

laborers - If you want to get a job done here, you ask

a tradesman who readily recommends one of his friends

or relatives! And, what's ironic . . . homes cost less

here than where Hispanic laborers dominate the

construction trades!

some word puzzle books and a magazine or two will do a lot to ease the time when you are bored. i took a book but because of the pain meds i kind of drifted in and out so it was hard to read forany length of time. if you take an ipod or other mp3 player don't forget extra batteries or the recharger.the same goes with a laptop. your own slippers and some sweat-pants go a long way for personal clothing

Yes, we had one (Wow, I am glad I am writing in past tense!) a shirt

chewer. It seemed to arise from his stress, but I had to be clear

that holes in shirts could not be an option; and gave lots of other

things to " twiddle " instead: Bracelets with beads, stress ball-type

objects to squish with his hands inside the desk, rocks, pencil

toppers, etc. (I have also heard others mention special plastic

tubing to chew on, if it is an especially oral requirement.) Good-

luck! - Velvet

My son is a shirt chewer... he chews on the sleeves and the neck!! It drives me

crazy!! Holes in his shirts... it can get expensive. I don't know how to stop

him, cause he usually does it when he isn't at home... like a nervous thing.

Nice to know he's not the only one.
