Guest guest
Hi Folks, Healing thought's are sent to those who are in pain and continued good health for those who are not. I am a 49 year old female living on the east coast of the USA. My partner and I have been in a happy relationship for 22 year's, we have two Furkids (large dogs) a Weimaraner and German Shorthaired Pointer. My RA story: I was working for a large chemical corporation when I was struck with this weird and not normal pain in my shoulder in June of 1994. Within two weeks the pain had spread to both shoulders, knee's, hip's, hands, neck, left elbow, right ribs and right foot.. My PCP pumped me full of anti inflammatories, pain pills and cortisone shots. I couldn't perform my job because of the pain, I'm sure you all know how that adds to the stress!! In July she sent me to a Rheumatologist and the test came back positive for the RA gene. Right away the doctor started me on Methotrexate and there was improvements but it took month's of suffering before the medication had any effect. By then the disease had zapped the strength from my body and my job required physical work, which caused continued joint swelling. The company I worked for offered me an early medical retirement in 95 and I took it. In 96 I had another horrific flare up and the doctor started me on hydroxychloquine (placqunil) and I'm happy to say I've been in remission since then. So that's my RA story. Guest guest
Hi, I can relate to both your post pregnancy problems and skin problems. I have a 7 year old and 2 1/2 year old twins. After both pregnancies I have had terrible flair ups and had to increase the prednisone and add other DMARDS to try to get control of things. We are still working on controlling the latest flair after 2 1/2 years. I was on Kineret until a couple of weeks ago because I finally got off the waiting list for Enbrel. I am hoping that is the answer. I am also on Methotrexate and Arava. As far as the skin problems go, I have had ongoing problems with dermititis/fungal infections and now they are developing boils on top of that. I feel like a pharmacy with all the creams and antibiotics on top of all the RA drugs I am on. I have never been to so many doctors appointments in my life. I also have problems with poor healing thanks to the prednisone which also causes my skin to be very fragile and tear at the least little bump. A great combination. The only advice I seem to get is that I need to lower and/or eleminate the predisone but I will still have problems with infections due to the immune suppressants in the other meds. There isn't much I can do for it because I need to take the other meds to control the RA. In other words you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Half the time I don't know which doctor to call for which problem and eventually they just pass me off to someone new. I can't tell you how many specialists I have seen for various problems in the last year. If anyone has any words of encouragement or suggestions of how to get control of things I would love it. I am getting pretty frustrated. I have had RA for about 15 years now, but it seems like I have really headed downhill with the latest post pregnancy flair. I was diagnosed with both fibromyalgiaa and RA a couple of months ago. I have been having symptoms of the RA for about 3 years. They used to come every 6 to 9 months so I could still hold down a job. When I was pregnant I was totally symptom free. But after 3 months postpartum they came back with a vengance. I decided to write after reading about infections that won't heal. I had a rash on my face that my pcp said was perioral dermatitis. He put me on heavy doses of prednisone. I am on Vioxx for RA and am going to be put on Plaquenil in a couple of weeks. Anyway, since the prednisone, I have been bitten by something and they will not heal. And my RA is really flaring up. Just wanted to share. Thanks for listening. Guest guest
I have also had healing problems due to the prednisone. In August I was bitten by several yellow ladybugs while in Michigan. These bites still have not healed no matter what I do. Just when I think they are almost gone they come back. I figure I'm stuck with them. The only way I was able to lower my prednisone was after I went on Remicade. I was on 4 mg/day for the past year until last week. My rheumy told me I have bursitis and I've been increased to 30 mg/day to get it under control. Yeah.
