Hi Bonner,

I must admit that one of the reasons I don't get colds or the flu, etc.

probably has to do with the fact that I've gotten a flu shot every year since

1975. Flu shots were always recommended for hospital workers. They also act

as immune stimulants. However, one study this year said individuals who had

flu shots for the last ten years straight have a much higher rate of

Alzheimer's. I'm skipping the shot this year so we'll see what happens.

Here's a link I got in my e-mail tonite that you might find helpful.

DR. GALLAND'S INTEGRATED MEDICINE

In this column " Foods that Heal " Dr. Galland discusses

detoxifying foods which protect against the effects of

environmental pollution, free-radical induced cell damage

and cancer through dietary anti-oxidants. Foods that are

richest in these anti-oxidants are red, yellow and green

vegetables, uncooked nuts and seeds (like almonds and

sunflower seeds), and fish. He also outlines the important

infection-fighting foods such as garlic, ginger, onions, and

tumeric, as well as vegetables containing a high

concentration of a group of natural chemicals called

saponins, which have immune-stimulating and antibiotic

effects--soybeans, chickpeas, bean sprouts, asparagus,

tomatoes, potatoes and oats.

I called one of the major Chinese herbalists companies yesterday, Ron

Teeguardins Dragon Herbs. With ALL my meds, they are afraid to prescribe

because of the types of drugs we take. Adding herbs only compounds issues, other

than Schizandra Lycium. That is really what I expected them to say. However, if

and when I chose to taper off and quit taking the imuran, coumoudin, urso,

prilosec, etc - they believe they could help. The Chinese herbs which support or

boost the immune system actually don't boost like caffeine but balance. Chinese

herbal medicine does not (as western medicine) look for the reason why it works,

they just have documented for 2000 years the results it brings about. I have

read many texts on Chinese herbalism and they don't just look/treat a single

organ or malfunction, but treat entire systems. So, I have decided (since I am

not responding much to the drugs yet (14 months) to give it thru the end of this

year. I do with hepatologist approval take schizandra (I am increasing the dose)

and have just added bilberry to try and help my eyesight.

Always interested in alternatives. I do feel our western toxic medicine ie

overuse of pesticides, steroids in meat, dairy cows, chickens, and antibiotics

to kill off bad and good, instead of strengthening the body to fight off the

problems is much of OUR problem. Just look at the cleaning products and some of

the building materials (asbestos) we have in our homes. It is no wonder we have

endangered our health so badly.

My first step has been to decide to be well. Not just overcome AIH, PBC, etc -

but be well and live. I just hope not to throw the baby out with the bathwater -

so I will stick with the present meds for awhile. I also have actively been

trying to remove the negative associations and problems in my life.

Unfortunately, we don't chose our relatives and aging seniors do require a great

deal. The biggest hurdle in overcoming some of the negatives is financial. It is

hard sometimes just to handle one full time job which doesn't quite pay all of

the bills. I promise to find joy and beauty in each day. Enough, enough. Sorry I

went on so long.

As I sit here I am thinking of a ginat circle of positive energy surrounding me

and stretcing out my window stouching each of you with wellness and comfort.

Back to work.

I've used Kava Kava before, and it REALLY helps me to relax. Nearly as good as

epam. I wonder if I could use it to ease my withdrawal symptoms as I start

to wean myself off of Lex???? I might try it, if I get desperate enough (even

though, I do know, that some studies came out that said Kava Kava was hard on

your kidneys).

Jeff Re: addiction, herbal remedies

I agree with you about the sociopathic greed shown by drug companies

(and big business in general). I *heartily* disagree with you about

there being any " fine line " between true addiction and the non-

physiological dependence that people develop on SSRIs. All I can say

is that you must never have experienced or observed true addiction.

It is not a pretty picture.

Morphine is a godsend to people who are dying. Not so for people who

intend to live for a while. Addiction and habituation occurs almost

immediately, and the accompanying problems are horrific.

I'm very unimpressed with the effects of herbal medicine and

homeopathy. I've never seen these remedies to be helpful in anything

but the mildest form of any ailment. I took St. 's Wort for a

while -- very nice, like a nice strong cup of coffee, but didn't make

a dent in my depression or anxiety. Let's face it, when most people -

- even children of the sixties -- are really in pain, they reach for

the Western medicine. As I see it, the main advantage of

prescription drugs over herbal remedies is that they work.
