Guest guest
Hello, I am new to this list. I suffer from TMJ and also have eight or nine dental " crowns " that seem to work against effective chewing. Because of these challenges, the task of chewing food at least a minute-per-mouthful is very difficult. Does anyone have a suggestion? I don't want to run everything through a blender or food processor first. Thanks very much! I am enjoying reading your posts. Guest guest
Hi Lin, Welcome to our list! Sorry to hear about the TMJ. As with many problems, the TMJ should become less of a problem as your condition becomes more balanced. According to Michio's "The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health", chronic intake of sugar, milk, ice cream, coffee, fruit, & juice OR eating too much meat, poultry, cheese, bread, baked flour products, & salt exacerbates TMJ. Unfortunately, most people abuse both of these food groups. So, eating as balanced as possible should eventually help the problem. Do you have access to cooking classes? Perhaps you might also want to see a counselor to obtain specific diet guidelines. In the meantime, increasing vegetables, leafy greens, & pureed soups, while decreasing baked goods & salt wouldn't hurt. I also believe that lifestyle greatly affects us. Getting enough sleep, having fun, taking a daily walk, & doing the daily body rub helps our bodies to become more balanced. Tai chi and massages might give some more immediate relief. And most importantly, as Danny mentioned, do the best that you can. Perhaps don't even think about chewing - just allow a balanced diet & lifestyle to gradually improve your condition, until voila! you feel better than ever.
