Anyone here live in NO?

Anyone know of any vegan friendly restaurants there? I scoured through Happy

cow and then

found some guy with some other info but thought I'd ask here too.

Peace,

Reg

Hey Danny

Sorry for some reason this was in the spam section, waiting for my approval.

LOL

We just got back and I have to tell you we didn't eat out once. My friend took

us to Whole

Foods and we ate at home, every meal.....

I took snacks out with us and munched when hungry. It's NOT a vegan friendly

place.

How long are you going for?

Reg

More info from my friends in New Orleans:

" There is a new restaurant just opened, I haven't been there yet,

called The Bamboo Cafe, they claim they are the only all-veg

restaurant in the city, and I believe that is true. There are a lot

of other options for places that offer some veg alternatives and

dishes. My next pick would be Mona's Cafe, which has 3 locations and

is Middle Eastern, really delicious, inexpensive, and large portions.

Another option might be Schiro's, in the Marigny, which has a whole

menu of East Indian food, including veggie options, and they state on

their menu they have veggie options so I take that to be an indication

they are willing to work with people on their needs. I know the cook

there and she is a lovely person.

Other than those 3, I found a couple of lists of New Orleans

restaurants that have stated they have veggie items on the menu. I

recommend calling ahead to find out what they might have. I know that

the Gumbo Shop has a vegan Gumbo Z-Herbes which is a traditional gumbo

made of greens such as chard, mustard, etc., super delicious. That

may be their only offering for veggies, not sure-- oh just found out

they generally have a veg/vegan special entree daily.

Bamboo Cafe:

http://www.cafebamboo.com/aboutus.html

Only go to this next link if you are ok with expletives. The language

is very expletive-casual, but I think the information is probably very

helpful, and includes restaurants in the suburbs so there are more

options:

http://pakupaku.info/neworleans/eatingnola.shtml

http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/louisiana/new_orleans/index.html

This is a blog with just a few suggestions that echo those on the

above lists, but with some additional info on cajun/creole specifically:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/540477

I found that when I googled: vegetarian " New Orleans " (include

quotes) I got a lot of results to comb through. Always call the

restaurant in question to get hours and whether the menu really is

workable.

And as I said, the only stores that I know of are Whole Foods, 2

locations, one in Uptown on Magazine, and the other in the suburb of

Metairie on Veterans Blvd. Google indicates there is a place called

the Apple Seed in the Central Business District (referred to as CBD

here), but they weren't answering the phone today.

If your friends feel like it, a report of their findings would be most

welcome so that I can be of more help to someone else. We're

ourselves just figuring out the restaurants here. "

Hope that helps!
