Guest guest
Hi I met a little girl in Boston about 7 years ago. At the time her vision was very poor, and I think she was about 6 years old. She wore glasses and was classified as “blind” for the purposes of educational needs. However she did have some vision, especially close up (I think about 3 feet). I contacted her mother about 18 months ago, just to catch up. It turns out that her vision has improved. Would you like to be in touch with them? I am pretty sure that they are not members of this group . Hi everyone Thanks for the kind words about Kirsten's photos. Kirsten is 5yrs now and her last eye test showed a deterioration in her vision. She has been wearing glasses for 1 year and I was told she needed them for close work and TV. She has been very good at wearing them at school, but not at home. Now, if her vision doesn't improve she will be unable to get a drivers licence as an adult! I was really surprised because from her behaviour I would never have known how bad her vision was. She now has to wear her glasses all the time and will be assessed every 3 months. It is expected that her vision will improve with time as she wears her glasses and the vision area of her brain is presented with a clear and not blurred picture. (Does this make sense?) Has anyone else had vision improve in a kid? Apparently vision develops until the age of 8yrs at which point all the pathways in the brain for vision are set. So because she is 5yrs, the aim is to improve Kirsten's vision. I really hope this works for her. Guest guest
Hi Shireen Thanks, perhaps you could pass on my e-mail address to them. Kirsten is definitely not near blind. Her glasses are +3.0 to correct an astygmatism. I am not sure what the refraction of her own lens is. Her orthoptist said that kids eye tests are quite accurate because they don't try to guess the letter, if they can't see it, they tend to give up and say so. The orthoptist was very encouraging in saying that she would expect to see an improvement in Kirsten's vision, even by her next appointment. If Kirsten improved by 2 lines on the vision chart, then she would be able to drive when older. I was clear in asking if the aim was to prevent further deterioration in her vision or actually get an improvement and the answer was an improvement. Kirsten is wearing her glasses all the time now. Her next appointment is in Feb and I will let you all know of the result. If anyone has experience of a similar situation, I would appreciate your story.
