Guest guest
, Paige looks great! She looks like she will never need another surgery already. Isn't it great to see that smile and have the operation behind! Our son is 13 and had the sling surgery at 6months. Could you tell me a little about the inside corner surgery: does this aid in opening length or wideness or both? Also is it a day operation like the sling(out of the hospital by lunch)? Guest guest
Hi Emalee, I know you were directing your question to but I thought I'd be cheeky and tell you that my daughter who is 3, had the 'corner' sugery about 5weeks ago. It is day surgery and the operation takes about 45mins. It is to remove excess skin in the corners which widens the eyes. In our case it has been extremely successful and we are seeing a very noticable difference. We can now see the inside corners of Jessie's eyes and see alot more white beside the pupils. Our surgeon told us that each inside of the eye has been widened by 7mm's, which is a really good result. Jess is due to have the sling surgery in the next 12mths. Guest guest
Hi Emalee, Yes, I am so glad to have the surgery behind us. I had been preparing her as much as possible and she did great but it was something I had been anticipating for 4.5 years. The inside corner surgery and benefits of it are just as Machaela described. Another reason for the inside corner surgery (per Paige's surgeon) is that people with BPES don't have enough skin vertically. Therefore, by releasing some of the tension from the corners, it allows the eyelids to be opened more. I don't do his explanation justice, but hopefully you can get the idea. When I had my surgery, it was done the same way, inside corners first, then the lid-lift. Paige continues to do extremely well and we are on her last day on antibiotoc ointment - YEA! I will try to post some additional pictures as she heals. Thanks to everyone who emailed well-wishes for Paige. I am very thankful for this group! Guest guest
I was a year old when I had the inside corners done. I think now some surgeons like to wait as long as possible before doing the corners as the nasal bridge naturally narrows as children grow. My lid-lift surgery was completed when I was five years old. I am satisfied with my results, although I can't really recall what my vision was like before the surgery. My mother said I tilted my head pretty far back in order to see so I'm sure it made a huge difference. I had no reservations for Paige other than minimal pain, of course. I had two surgeries, like Paige, and I think they are holding up pretty well. I have had some drooping in one eye but overall it has been successful for 28 years. Guest guest
Hi Emalee, To answer your question, no it does not hamper the closing of the eyes at all. It is alot less involved than the sling surgery, and yes Jessie is the pigtail girl! I have posted a photo yesterday, which is 5weeks after the op. Not the best photo but in comparison to her before surgery photos, the result is definately noticable. I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone to having it done. We are so pleased with the result. It has always been the sling surgery that has worried me, for some reason, I guess because its more involved, with the taking of tendon out of her leg etc but our surgeon is strongly encouraging us to go ahead with it as her vision is deteriorating without it. Hope this helps a little, Machaela.emalee <emaleebarrow@...> wrote: HI Machaela, Thanks for the information! Here's another question does it aid/hamper the closing of the eye? 7 mm's is a lot. Guest guest
That is all positive! Our son is now 13, 20/20 vision but there are occasions were if he is sitting low he tilts his head more than his contemporaries. I am going to address this at his annual check-up. We had been told further operations would be cosmetic and up to him unless there was a change in vision. It has been good for him to see all these wonderful photos and know there are other kids like him. Guest guest
Hi Machaela, Our son had the sling surgery at 6months of age, has never had an issue with it. At 13 it is still functional and very little, if any change in its' elasticity. At the time we had been told he would have to have it re-placed later with thigh tissue. However at the annual check-up they advised they had found that the silicone actually did a better job. Since going this group I have learned people have failed slings, bad reactions, etc.. I feel for you and the decision to go ahead. It is so hard to say go a head. You will know when the time is right. For us we knew his vision would not progress properly and we had to go a head. Guest guest
Hi I was really interested reading your posts because I have a son who is due to undergo surgery on July this year, he will be 4 and a half. He will have the same as Paige but in one surgery. Ever since I got the call from the hospital, it has been going through my head constantly whether or not I get both done. I have BP like Sam and I have had the same surgery as yourself but done in one operation. I had never thought twice about having both done for Sam before until recently and then I read your explanation as to why it is good to have the inner corners done. It is so hard to change his appearance but at the same time.... Paige look amazing. The surgery is fantastic. Where did Paige have this done? , Glasgow x

Guest guest
Hi Thanks very much. I have mentioned to the doctors previously about if it is ok to be done in one surgery and they are happy with it. They always say to me " well look at your own eyes, you had it done " So, they seem pretty confident about it. I do like the idea of the seperate surgeries too. It is so difficult. I understand what you are saying about the eye sockets too. I think the same. Your photos of the girls are lovely. Thanks for putting them on to share. Take care xxxxxxxx > > Hi , > I will do my best to explain what the doctor told me but please note that each doctor advises based on each patient individually. Basically, Paige's doctor (Dr. Dutton at the UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA) said that he likes to wait as long as possible before completing the inside corner surgery because the nasal bridge will naturally narrow as children grow. However, once the child is big enough (4-5 years of age) or if eyesight is adversely affected, the corner surgery is completed first as it releases some of the tension in the eyelid because people with BPES don't have enough skin vertically. > > The following is my interpretation of what a person's eyelid is like with BPES. Like a shade going up and down over a window, such is a person's lid who has BPES. In a person without BPES, the open eyelid will roll back over the eyeball creating a lid crease because of the increase amount of skin and because the eyeball seems to stick out a little further. Paige and I never had that crease until it was surgically created by our doctors and I feel like in our case our eyeballs are set back a little in our heads (thus the shade over a window example). Like I said, this is ONLY my humble interpretation of how I understand BPES. The doctors never described it like this to me. I just noticed the difference when my second daughter was born without BPES and I thought her eyeballs stuck out too far but I think it was just me getting used to seeing someone without BPES. I also remember seeing my second daughter's ultrasound pictures and I > immediately noticed that her eye-sockets were huge when I compared them to my first daughter's eye-sockets and I knew then that my second daughter probably wouldn't have BPES. I haven't shared this information with anyone else and if you think I'm crazy - I apologize. They are only things that I have noticed. > > Anyway, back to what the doctor said... The other reason for doing the surgeries separate in Dr. Dutton's opinion was that he didn't want the two incisions working against each other (i.e. the stitches and silicone strands) during her recovery. Not sure if it is due to swelling or simply having 6 incisions on each eye. I just know that doing it all in one surgery was not an option for Paige's doctor. > > I would encourage you to go with what your doctor advises for Sam, especially since your surgery was successfully done in one surgery as well. I just went with what I knew, and my surgery was done in two separate surgeries. Also, maybe your doctor has another explanation as to why the surgery is completed in one operation. If you have that, please share because it would be interesting to hear that perspective as well. > > Best wishes for Sam's upcoming surgery! > > Charlotte, NC, USA > > > > blepharophimosis Re: Paige's Second Surgery > > > Hi > > I was really interested reading your posts because I have a son who is > due to undergo surgery on July this year, he will be 4 and a half.
