Guest guest
Just wanted to give an update on our son's latest surgery and see if anyone has had an experience similiar to ours. Our son Rowan, who will be 3 in August, had his first bi-lateral sling surgery using donated fascia at 10 months of age. The right lid was not lifted high enough, so at 19 months he had a second sling surgery using the donated fascia (again with no success). We interviewed another surgeon (Dr. Ted. Wojno in Atlanta) on 2 occasions and decided to let him give it a try. During one of our consultations/interviews, Dr. Wojno said that about a year ago it occurred to him to try taking two 5 centimeter pieces of fascia from a young patients leg (since at this age they are too young to get a single 10 centimeter piece) and then tie them together so that he could use the patient's own fascia rather than the donated fascia. He said that he had not heard of this approach and didn't know why he hadn't thought of it sooner. He said that so far it has worked on that particular patient who is now 3 years old. So we decided to let him try this on Rowan last Friday. We are back home in Florida now and Rowan is doing extremely well, running around like nothing ever happened which is similiar to his previous recoveries. It is too soon to tell if the surgery has been successful, but we are hoping that his own fascia will be more effective than the donated material. Has anyone heard of this approach on the younger kids? Kim Tallahassee, FL
Guest guest
I hope this works well for Rowan, it seems like it should work fine. My daughter is 2 yrs 10 mos. and has silicon slings, she also had canthioplasty in Feb, she is doing well. She will have the slings with her own fascia lata probaly this Jan (08) She is very tall so I don't think 10 cm will be difficult to get from her legs. However, her dr. has stressed to us that for Lily, fascia lata is the best option, silicon just won't hold up long enough, she has a severe case.
