when tristan was taken off his prednisone and ibuprofen his appetite came

back full force. he is constantly eating. is your daughter taking prednisone?

that could be the cause of insomnia. my son stays up late too, i just put in

a movie while we snuggle up on the couch and ill fall asleep with him next to

me. by the time winnie the pooh is over, hes asleep too and if i happen to

wake up i will move us to our rooms. my 7 year old gets jealous and its been

difficult explaining to her why her little brother gets certain treatment. i

told her if we didnt give in a little bit he'd drive us all crazy. haha she

is a great kid though and is very understanding. cheri

Dear Amy, I know that sometimes n will complain of insomnia. She will

tell me that she wakes up at 3 a.m. and can't go back to sleep. Maybe it is

part of the disease. We have a 2 1/2 year old little boy that doesn't sleep too

well. He doesn't take a nap anymore. I know it is a trade off between daytime

sanity, or night time sleep. If took a nap, he would be running around the

house until midnight. You may want to try no nap. I know you don't want to

hear that, but you could try it. Good luck.

(3 1/2 years old) is driving us crazy. She is getting up in the

middle of the night claiming she is hungry. I feed her crackers (saltines).

Well, lastnight she was awake in her room until almost 10:30 p.m. and then I

heard her cry out at 1 a.m. Then she got us up 3:30 a.m. She claimed she was

still sleeps. What do I do?

She takes an afternoon rest (sometimes she falls asleep) everyday when her

refuses to eat dinner but is hungry before bed. So, lastnight I bad sure to feed

her some oatmeal, then cheerios and then bread with butter. When we shut her

You are probably right (no nap). I didn't realize you had a son. My little

Andy will have someone to play with at the JRA get together In March. We sent

our invite back today. I don't know what there is to do in Portland so I said,

the zoo, Omsi or Chuck-e-cheeses (for fun places to get together). I don't

remember them doing this last year.

I don't disagree at all. Tally still sleeps with me even though he is 5.

His 5th birthday was going to be the big day when he was suppose to finally

sleep by himself but I decided that the stress of the disease was enough for

him to handle. He sleeps good now and when he cries out in the middle of the

night, I'm close by to hear him and cuddle and kiss him back to sleep.

Hi,

Sounds like a good solution to me. In time, will probably get

tired of the sleeping arrangements and want her own space. Hopefully,

before it gets too hard on you and your husband. At least you're all

able to get better rest.

Take care,

Georgina

Hello! HeLp Me!

(3 1/2 years old) is driving us crazy. She is getting up in the

middle of the night claiming she is hungry. I feed her crackers (saltines).

Well, lastnight she was awake in her room until almost 10:30 p.m. and then I

*aaahhh* Which wouldn't be so bad if she was an only child. But I had my babies

in 34 months (with her being the oldest). So, here I sit tired at 8 a.m. while

still sleeps. What do I do?

She takes an afternoon rest (sometimes she falls asleep) everyday when her

siblings do. I NEED that time by myself each day to recupporate. She basically

refuses to eat dinner but is hungry before bed. So, lastnight I bad sure to feed

her some oatmeal, then cheerios and then bread with butter. When we shut her

bedroom door she cried she was hungry again. Anyone deal with this before? I

don't know if she is really hungry or just wanting to get out of bed! She is

small for her age (weighs 26 pounds).

Any suggestions?????????????? Someone told me that maybe she is having a

burning sensation (like when you have an ulcer) and she is mistaking that for

hunger.

P.S. she takes MTX and we just took her off of naproxen to see if that helps

with the stomach pain.

Amy: Talk with your MD first, but you could try giving her over the counter

pepcid or zantac twice a day in case it is the naprosyn causing the prob.

yes, as soon as tristan was taken off prednisone, he started eating much

better. being taken off the ibuprofen could have something to do with it

also. his nurse called me friday, as they had his lab results back and he is

no longer anemic! :) i guess all the hard work has paid off. i started

feeding him WHENEVER he wanted food, whether it was 6pm, 6am or any where in

between. also, i put him on a vitamin with extra iron. thursaday he ate all

day, and my kiddo eats healthy! he wanted salad, fruits, veggies, crackers,

bread, etc and still at 10 pm he wanted a steak! so he got that too. haha

well i hope everyone else is doing well. take care cheri

Hi Cheri,

Wow! That's amazing! When Tristan stopped taking prednsione, his

appetite came back?!? Prednisone makes my son ravenous! At least when we

raise his dose. Once he gets settled and adjusts to a certain dose, he's

okay again but whenever it's raised, he starts eating like a madman :)

Take care,

Georgina

Quite a bit of confessions on the sleep deprived topic!

Elliot awakes very frequently in the middle of the night.

But we don't let him sleep in our bed.

I probably would have caved several years ago with that, but Rena is very

strict about that with the kids.

However, Elliot will come trapsing into our room at any hour of the night

with no apparent reason, while our older son usually has a pretty good

reason if he comes in.

So we don't get the best nights of sleep, and I see from the list that we're

not alone.

Hi Cheri,

Great news, about the recent blood work. Anemia has been a recurring

problem for Josh too but his last labs showed some improvement. Sounds

like Tristan has a great appetite these days :)

Pleaseeeeeee tell me how you get a good nights sleep...I was

diagnoised about a year and a half ago with RA, OA, and fibroy.. and

I've been sleep deprived for the past year really bad..I'm going

around in a fog most of the time...I take 2 gravol tablets and .5mg

of an ativan each night...it knocks me out but when i wake up I feel

exhausted. I drink one cup of coffee and that's early morning..I do

notice when I'm too fatigued to make a decent meal and just pick at

whatever's quick, I do feel worse the next day..so, i'm sure what you

eat and drink does make a difference to most people.

Hi Folks,

Haven't been on recently but feel compelled to opinionate and give a

brief update.

RE/ Sleep deprived: I too suffer from same. I take 2 or 3 Trazadone

and a Vicadin or two and get 4 to 5 hours.

RE/ Fatigue: Methotrexate can't make me much more tired than I am

now. I hurt 24/7 and it makes me so tired I could spit.

My Dr. has consulted with 2 RA's and is finally putting me on 10 mg

Metho, 200 mg Plaquinil and (can't remember dosage) Prednasone.

I do have an appointment with RA in late August. There are only 3

RA's in Anchorage, Ak. One will not take VA patients, one is the the

Ak Native Med. Ctr. and the other will see me in August!!!!

One of my daughters has been doing some stretching excersises with

me. Sometimes I feel it helps and other times it makes me hurt. No

happy medium.

I am sooooo loking forward to some relief with the prednasone and

then the Methotrexate and Plaquinil.

Thank you all for contributing to this group. It has been a great

help to me. At times I've been so depressed I've wanted to go postal

or suicidal and your comments give me hope and a sense of direction.

Thank you all and God Bless each of you.

Jay, Prednisone usually acts pretty quick (a day or two) while the other RA medicines are notoriously slow acting, requiring several weeks to months to become effective. Also starting dosages are usually low to check for any bad side effects and then increased to find an effective level. Your treatment sounds good to me but if you continue to have problems you may be able to get to the rheumatologist earlier if you ask your primary physician to call for you. Good luck and God bless.

Harold,

From my research you are right concerning the drugs. Unfortunatley

there is no way I can see the rheumy prior unless there is a

cancellation with enough advance time that they can call me and I can

make the 120 mile drive to Anchorage. My Dr called and consulted with

him and he gave my Dr a date in Sep.,!!!! My Dr's mother had RA and

his brother has RA sohe is familiar with the disease. He also has a

friend Dr that is a rheumy and he consulted with him. It is between

the to consults that my Dr came up with which drugs and the dosages

to start me out with.

I had a bad night last night and today is worse than most days. I

should be receiving my drugs the first part of the week and look

forward to the prednasone giving relief.

Thanks for your involement in this group. You appear to have done

significant research and first hand experience. You are a wealth of

knowledge and give hope and inspiration.

God Bless You,

Jay, 120 miles to a rheumatologist sounds like a long way. I looked in the internet and found a document, Alaska Arthritis and Osteoporosis Plan, June 2002 (http://www.epi.hss.state.ak.us/programs/chronic/arthritis/planmar02.pdf ) that said that there are only the three RDs you mentioned in the entire state. I guess you're pretty close to them compared to a lot of other Alaskans. August is a long time off so I hope things get better soon. It sounds like the doctor you're working with is a good substitute for an RD until you can get to a real one. Just where in Alaska do you live? To the south is the Kenai peninsula with Seward, Soldotna, and fishing on the Russian River; to the north is Talketna and fishing on a river near there (but past the Deshka which is my favorite fishing); and to the east is Copper River and Valdez - just a sightseeing trip for me. To the west I don't think there are any roads. Alaska is beautiful in the summer and the land of the midnight sun, but I haven't been there in the winter to see the land of the noon moon.

On this board I think in Virginia is the best source of good information, but she hasn't been posting much lately. I try to do what I can.

If you'd like to communicate with me by e-mail my address is hvantuyl@....

Good luck and God bless.

Harold, I live in Seward on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula and

a 120 mile drive to Anchorage. Your geography is correct. There is

excellent fishing on most of the creeks in the Susitna drainage. I

like the Deshka, Alaxander and the others around there. Beautiful

country too.

My disease has continued to progress into my elbows today. I think it

is working its way into my neck and hips. That fundementally leaves

me with NO joint in my body uneffected!!

My Dr ordered the drugs for me Fri and I should received them Tues or

Wed.

Next time you visit Alaska you'll have to give me a heads up and we

can get together.

Best wishes and God Bless,

Jay

Thanks, Grandpavan. You say such nice things! Sorry I've been MIA. My work was really busy.

Jay: My rheumy is in Washington, DC, which is 72 miles from where I live (and about 2.5 hours with traffic). I've been on Prednisone & Methotrexate since I got diagnosed in 1999. Remicade has provided me with the best results. Prednisone works well but your body becomes dependent quickly. The major side effects I've had are: weight gain, nightmares, and bizarre food craving. It took me about a week for the Prednisone to fully kick in & 2 months for the metho.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for sleeping. When my arthritis first started, I couldn't get any sleep. Since being on Remicade and my symptoms are (mostly) under control, I sleep okay. What helps me is being on a schedule. Each night (usually on weekends too) I go to bed at 10pm and get up around 7am. I usually wake up 3-5 times a night but I can feel back asleep fairly quickly. Sorry I can't help more.

Take care,

in VA

You might try t3-fp1 bipolar for difficulty staying asleep.
