Guest guest
Hi Dana, its exciting and worrying all at the same time, I remember it well. Me (40) and Emy (12) had 2 operations each, 1 which was to reduce the epicanthal fold, the bit over the corner of the eyes. This was a smaller operaton for us, and it was all quite painless and in and out of hospital fairly quickly. We then went on to have the lid suspension 6 months later. We were both operated in at Moorfields, London. Hope this helps. Any more questions welcome. It has been a long time since I have posted anything, but Brooklyn had her check up yesterday with her dr @ U of I and he will be performing the epithcanthus later this month. Anyone who has experience this I would appreciate hearing from you. We have had the 'sling' surgery before, but not this. Thank you!!Dana

Guest guest
Thanks to both of you for your response. I really appreciate it and helps to know what to expect. We have had the lid lift, but never the inner corners. Jessie is absolutely adorable!! Did you both notice a pretty big difference from this surgery? Her dr said he thought it would help to be able to get her eyes open a bit more.... > From: Dana <brooklyn041502@...> > Subject: blepharophimosis Epicanthus Surgery > blepharophimosis > Received: Thursday, 17 July, 2008, 3:01 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > Hey everyone!! Guest guest
Dana: had the epicanthus surgery done with his slings and you can view pictures under . Our dr also thought it would help with the overall vision and it was a way to begin to " pull " on his eye openings from that angle instead of just pulling on the top and bottom corners. I realize that description sounds very odd and maybe cosmetic in nature. But the actual slings were pulling the lids up and 's lower lids also droop downward. This meant that once we did the slings he would have a bigger area to compensate for when he tried to shut his eyes. He would also risk having drier eyes because of the dramatic increase in openings. To reduce this area the lower lids were pulled up a bit and the epicanthus surgery was done to pull in the other direction a little. All of our procedures were done by Dr. Katowitz in Philadelphia. He has worked with several of the dr's at Moorfields in London and his son is finishing a fellowship at Moorfields this summer. Overall 's vision and appearance are improved and he is a happy little guy. We have not had any problems with dry eyes and in subsequent check-ups his cornea is not getting too dry. We do continue to use ointment when he sleeps. As you know, every case is different and I am in no means endorsing our procedures as the best course of care. 's BPES is unique and there were definitely various medical opinions on which surgery he should have and when surgery should be done. The epicanthus part was done with his initial surgery 11/26/07 - one of his slings broke and his slings were redone on 2/26/08. Hope this helps - an best wishes to you and your daughter -Anne Weber, Chicago, IL, USA-- > From: Dana <brooklyn041502@...> > Subject: blepharophimosis Re: Epicanthus Surgery > blepharophimosis > Date: Friday, July 18, 2008, 7:52 AM > Thanks to both of you for your response. Guest guest
Hi Dana, Our daughter Naomi had surgery 5 weeks ago in Seoul, South Korea. She had epicanthoplasty and sling done. For the epicanthoplasty, she had both medial (eye corner near the nose bridge) and lateral (outer eye corners). Ern, my husband posted her latest photo (4 weeks post surgery). You can view them under Naomi Chang. She's healing very well and can't wait to start swimming : ) All the best!!! > > > From: Dana <brooklyn041502@> > > > Subject: blepharophimosis Epicanthus Surgery > > > blepharophimosis > > > Received: Thursday, 17 July, 2008, 3:01 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hey everyone!! Guest guest
Hi Dana,In Jessie's case we definately saw a noticable difference. We can now see the white on the inner side of her pupils(which previously was covered in skin) and a more defined inner corner to the eyes. Her surgeon was really happy with the result. It is definately more simple than the sling surgery, in my opinion. The procedure took about 45 mins. Personally I would have no hesitation in reccomending it.Best wishes to you and your family.Machaela.xxFrom: Dana <brooklyn041502@...>Subject: blepharophimosis Re: Epicanthus Surgeryblepharophimosis Received: Friday, 18 July, 2008, 4:52 AM Thanks to both of you for your response. Guest guest
Wow Anne, you guys had to travel to Philadelphia? That is quite a distance from Chicago. I agree that every case is different. I just want what is best for my daughter. She hadn't experience any vision problems until the last year. Her sling broke in her right eye and due to the time insurance took to approve and the time of surgery she became accustomed to not using her eye and became a bit 'lazy' if you will. Her eye weakened due to this. They tried glass alone, but her vision got a little worse so they added patch therapy. I just have to put trust in the doctors to do what is right and necessary. Thank you to everyone who has responded. It is a true blessing to have people to discuss this issue with as very, VERY few people can relate. I feel better going into surgery hearing such positive things....THANKS AGAIN! I will be sure to put some updated pictures on her album which is titled Brooklyn. > > > From: Dana <brooklyn041502@> > > > Subject: blepharophimosis Epicanthus Surgery > > > blepharophimosis > > > Received: Thursday, 17 July, 2008, 3:01 AM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hey everyone!! Guest guest
- Naomi looks wonderful!! Good to hear things went well and she is quickly healing. Hope Brooklyn has the same outcome!! Sad that their summer breaks are spent having surgery though.....but better than during the school year. Thank you! Guest guest
Hi Dana (I apologise if this post comes through twice, my internet is playing up and am not sure it the last post went through?) I had my epicanthus operated on when I was 13, I then had another operation a year later. As I was never diagnosed with bleph my surgery was performed by a cosmetic surgeon but I'm sure what they do is very similar. I am so happy with my results - you can see pictures of my daughter and I under ' and Imogen. As happy as I am with the results I must admit it took a few years for my eyes to open up to the stage they are now. I can't wait for my daughter to have her operations! Good luck for the upcoming surgery. Take care (Australia) --- In blepharophimosis , " Dana " <brooklyn041502@...> wrote: > > Hey everyone!! Guest guest
- Thanks for your response! I checked out your pictures and Imogen is adorable!! Congratulations!! HOnestly, had I not seen your childhood pictures I would have never known by your adult pictures that you had bleph. The doctor did amazing!! You look beautiful!! When will your daughter have her surgery? Dana > > > > Hey everyone!! Guest guest
Hi Dana, Imogen will probably have her operations at around 3 or 4 but we haven't made a decision yet. I think she we will go and see the surgeon's that our Opthamologist recommends but I have also told my husband I would also like to see the surgeon who did my operations as well before we make any final decisions. To tell you the truth I am not worried at all about Imogen's epicanthus being operated. it's the sling surgery I'm concerned about. I never had that so it is the unknown for us. My surgeon actually cut the skin above the eye to make a crease. He also took 3mm off the muscle above my eye, I know some people with Bleph don't actually have this muscle though. Hope all goes well with the surgery. Kind regards
