Hi ne, My son, 17 and I, 42, both have BPES. We live in Northern Ontario but our specialist Dr. Pashby is located in Toronto, which really, is within driving distance for you, if there is no one closer. Dr. Pashby has done one surgery on me as an adult and 3 on my son Tyler. He is very experienced with BPES and works out of Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. I know there are quite a few people on this list that are his patients. He always said to me that he could open my son's eyes a lot wider but that we then would open him up to a lot of infections, etc. and that he would not recommend it. We followed his recommendation and are very glad we did. If you are interested in seeing him his phone number is (416) 441-1313 Take care, brianne19802004 <brianne19802004@...> wrote: Hi my name is ne and my 3 year old son Mehkai has BPES. I would like some feedback from parents whose children have had the sling portion of the surgery done and also any surgeon recommendations would be great. We live in Illinois but we will travel if necessary. Thank you

Sorry I needed to clarify what I just wrote. When I said "he could open my son's eyes a lot wider" I should have added that they would be permanently open (which is not good) and that is what would open him up to infections, etc. Kati Graw <katigraw@...> wrote: Hi ne, My son, 17 and I, 42, both have BPES. Not necessarily; some (perhaps even MOST) close fully, some don't. It's

quite difficult for a surgeon to balance the amount of lift required for

a lid to clear the pupil while still allowing it to meet its lower mate.

It's a very fine balance and the margin for error is small.

I had my sling surgery (fascia lata) about 40 years ago and I can assure

that during church sermons, commutes, Gone With The Wind, and long

business meetings, my eyes definitely always close fully.

If one's surgeon can only do the operation such that ALL of his/her

patients' eyes are always open, shop around. There might be other

surgeons around who have a better batting average than that.

Hi ne, My son Mason had slings done when he was about 10-12 weeks old. His eyes were open after the surgery but as the slings relaxed he was able to learn to control opening and closing. He is 7 1/2 now (yikes!) and he manages well. We realize that the slings will probably have to be replaced at some point but for now he is doing super. He had another surgery when he was almost 5. This was more of a plastic surgery to reshape his eyes and create a bridge to his nose. We live in Madison, WI. The Dr. that did his slings was Dr. Monte Mills, I believe he is in Pennsylvania now. He was phenomonal. He had a Dr. that was doing a fellowship and assisted in the surgery. That Dr. is still in Madison and his name is Dr. Movaghar and he works at Deur Dean. We still see him. The Dr. that did the plastic surgery was Dr. Lucarelli. He is outstanding and does well with the

slings too. He works through the UW Hospitals. Good luck with your decisions. I was very afraid and naive when we started this road but things are really going well for Mason.
