repeated sling surgery

Hi all

I just thought I'd let you know about Bipin's repeated surgery on

his left eye. He's 2 1/2 now and had his first lid lift at

Moorfields a year ago. Then in July he fell over and bumped his head

which undid the sling on the left eye. Since then we've been going

to Moorfields every few weeks to check on his eyesight development

in his left eye and were advised a few weeks ago that it was not

developing as well as it could be so they would redo the operation.

So he had his repeat surgery a week ago. The whole experience this

time was easier for all concerned, partly because he's a year older,

but mostly because we knew what to expect so did not have that 'oh

god what have we done to him' moment when he came out of the

anaesthetic screaming his head off. He's been fine since, perfectly

chirpy by the next day.

His left eye is now quite a lot more open than the right which had

dropped/settled quite a lot since the last op. We're expecting that

to settle down a bit but not sure that they will look completely

equal. He may still go on to have the permanent op in a couple of

years time - where they use fascia from the thigh. But we've been

told that there is no need as long as the temporary slings hold up.

Our feeling has always been that we will do what we need to for his

eyesight to develop but not worry about the cosmetic side of things.

We didn't know that it was so easy for the slings to come undone -

his fall was a big bump but not a major accident by any means - so

feeling a little wary of him doing the same thing again. But then

again he's a toddler and likes charging about so we also can't spend

our lives worrying about it!
