Hi ,

Between and I, we have about eleven or twelve drug allergies!! Watch

carefully for difficulty with breathing (might be hard to spot with

him), swelling of the lips or hives of any kind. Also, the eyes can swell

quickly. Basically, the mucous membranes are affected first, including the

mouth and throat. If you're going to keep him on it, I would insist on and

EpiPen Jr. ASAP if you don't already have one. That way, if he has a

reaction, you can stop it temporarily--then get him to the hospital. It's

only temporary. Whenever either one of us uses new antibiotics, I get out

the appropriate EpiPen and wait until I know everything is okay.

Once, with Bri's first allergic reaction (Penicillin), I was told that the

first time boys will often only get the horrible rash. It's the second time

that is dangerous for anaphylaxis. 's former Ped told me this, I don't

know how accurate it is. Maybe because I've had anaphylaxis about five times.

But I will say, Bri has allergic reactions but not the anaphylaxis variety.

Maybe that old geezer was right about the boy/girl thing!!! I hope it works

out. Is allergic to other meds?? Isn't Augmentin Penicillin? Or

related?? I can't remember.

Autumn doesn't respond to Augmentin so I don't know if I can help on what an

allergy would look like.

I disagree in part with what your pharmacist said. I don't know that an

antihistamine would have tempered an allergic reaction or not. Yes, they

are supposed to. . .but, have you ever seen a drug that was supposed to do

something in a PID child & it just didn't. Autumn has taken tons of

antihistamines & can have an allergic reaction to something while on them &

the antihistamine didn't even touch it. I'm specifically thinking of an

insect reaction she had when she was about 2 years old & the antihistamines

didn't even slow it down. We had to go to an even stronger one before she

started to respond.

So, proceed with caution yes. . .drug allergy? Maybe or maybe not.

Hopefully others who have drug allergies can help more on this.

chronic sinusitis, and allergies), and Duncan (15 months)

Hi , I have been out of town. Antibiotics can still be allergenic

even through an anitihistamine. Lucas developed hives all over his body from

Prednisone. He was on significant doses of it for persistent asthma. He as

also on Zyrtec at the time which is an anithistamine. We have found that

Benadryl works the best with an allergy even when other antihistamines are in

the system. If it is an allergy increased doses per the doc usually clears

the allergy. Our doc is very unwilling to continue the antibiotic with any

rash. He discontinues and adds an increased dose of a short acting

antihistamine and then sees what happens. If it spontaneously resolves it is

usually the item we thought if not we begin to rethink what it could be.

Many times with Lucas it is the preservative or coloring not the med. Just

some thoughts. When is your appt. with the Pulmonologist? I am concerned .
