Guest guest
Hi Shelia... had a flatten right back side also. While we saw improvement, it stoped at 6 to 8 months. By the time we got her insurance to finally give us the go ahead, she was banded at 10 months. she just now last Saturday turned 1 year old. The results we've gotten in the 7 weeks she's been in the band have been awesome! I come to the clinic in Chicago, they won't steer you wrong!! They know their jobs, and are some of the most friendly people I've ever met. If you decide on banding, you can't go wrong with Cranial Tech in Chicago and the DOC band. Kelli and Em banded 10-5-01. Guest guest
Sheila: Welcome to our group!!!! I hope some of the repositioning parents in this group will respond to your question. That is wonderful Aileen's head has improved some on it's own. That must make your decision to band or not all the more difficult! My daughter had severe plagio so it was an " easy " decision for us. You're so lucky to live close to the CT clinic in Oakbrooke (we drove 4 hrs one way there!). They are a wonderful group of people at that office. Just so you know, yes the younger the better to band, but my daughter who had severe plagio didn't begin her DOC treatment til she was 11.5 mos old & we still rec'd about 60% correction! So even if you were to wait a bit longer to make your decision, you could still get correction when your daughter is " older " , but don't let what I'm saying influence you either way!!! Please keep us posted on Aileen's progress & your decision. I wish you the best of luck!!!! Guest guest
Hi Sheila, My son also had/has flat back/right. He was considered "mild" even though people stared noticeably at him even with a full head of hair. We got the band finally at 12 mos and it worked wonders in the first 6 weeks and then nothing. He has plateaued now and the shape of his head still bothers me a great deal. Our ortho says we can keep the helmet on for another month or so (he is now 17 months) until he outgrows it but she doesn't expect much more improvement. I regret greatly not getting the helmet earlier. I feel we would have got much greater improvement if we had started two or three months earlier. So my vote is to get the helmet asap because the window of opportunity is quickly closing. The head growth starts slowing down dramatically after 10 mos I think. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, I think it is wonderful that you have seen improvement so far with out using a band or a helmet!! I know we have had parents that decided to forego the band for one reason or another and they had really good results. I hope some of them respond to you. Good luck with your decision, and let us know what it is you do decide. The parents in this group are terrific and offer support and advice....these guys are the best, glad to have you with us! Guest guest
Hi Toni, Hold tight - the methotrexate takes several weeks to take effect. The process of finding the right medication for you takes many months- possibly longer. However, you must be comfortable with your doctor, as that trust in your physician is absolutely necessary for you to have the best treatment possible for you. I was first diagnosed about 10 yrs ago, did well with plaquenil at that point and was off all medications except NSAIDS/ 2 inhibitors until this past year. It is only now, 12 mo. later, that I am finally feeling like I can move on with life again - after 12 months of shuffling medications. I'm on plaquenil, celebrex, tapering off prednisone, and on methotrexate. That doesn't mention the antidepressant and folic acid. Good luck to you! I was diagnosed with RA in 99, but it has only gotten worse in the past couple of months. Most of the time I find myself in such despair and pain with no one to talk to about it. A couple of weeks ago my doctor put me on methotrexate, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm also in the process of looking for another doctor, cause I'm not feeling comfortable with the one I have. I look forward to chatting and reading everyone's posts. Guest guest
Toni, Methotrexate usually takes quite a while to become effective, and usually a person is started at a low level and increased gradually if the person can tolerate the medicine. The only one that usually gives prompt relief is Prednisone but it has more possible bad side effects than Methotrexate so it is usually only used for a short time or at a low dose or both. Please be patient with Methotrexate and if things get too bad ask about Prednisone. Good luck and God bless.
