Guest guest
With all the rashes we've talked about on the list, I thought you all would find this interesting.....pattie Test your health IQ: What's behind your child's rashes? Ages 2 to 8 Question: Summer means picturesque picnics, hearty hikes, and dazzling days at the beach — but it also means exposing your child to the elements. Can you match the following outdoor irritants with the rash each one may cause? 1. Prickly heatA. An itchy red rash that appears in lines or streaks 2. Poison ivy or oakB. A red " bull's-eye " rash with raised edges and a pale center 3. Tick biteC. A bright red pimply rash in the folds of the skin Answer: 1C; 2A; 3B 1. If your child suddenly develops a bright red pimply rash on his neck, under his arms, or near the edges of his diaper or underwear, it's probably a heat rash. Heat rash, also known as prickly heat, is a pimply red skin eruption that can appear when your child overheats in hot and humid weather. The rash shows up most often in folds of the skin and on parts of the body where clothing fits snugly, including the chest, stomach, neck, crotch, and buttocks. If your child wears hats, the rash may even spread across his scalp or forehead. 2. The telltale signs of a poison ivy, oak, or sumac rash are itchy, swollen red patches of skin, often limited to just one or two particular areas of the body. It can be hard to determine the cause of these rashes, but if your child has been playing in wooded or boggy areas (or if you have a pet that's been in these areas) these plants are likely culprits. Other clues that it may be a poison-plant rash: The rash shows up 12 to 48 hours after contact (it can take up to seven to ten days to show up, but appears quickly in most children). The rash is very itchy and usually appears as lines or streaks, and it typically blisters and crusts over within a few days. Which plant is the culprit usually depends on where you live. Poison ivy is prominent in the eastern United States, poison oak in the West, and poison sumac in the Southeast. 3. Though it doesn't always appear, the most distinctive sign of a Lyme disease-carrying tick bite is often a circular or oval red rash or a bull's-eye rash with raised edges and a pale center that develops at the site of the bite. It may start at a fraction of an inch and increase to 5 to 6 inches in diameter; it may also appear on a part of the body far away from the tick bite. The rash can show up from two days to a month after the bite and may last a few hours or several weeks. Fortunately, tick-borne illnesses are uncommon, and when detected early, can be treated effectively with antibiotics.
Guest guest
Oh I forgot--Autumn had this a couple of years ago when she was fthree. I do remember that exposure to the sun makes it worse and seems like it takes about 2 wks??? to totally go away and if you go out in the sun it can last much longer. We did do the Pedi--because I didn't know what this rash was! She wasn't in daycare but we used to go alot to the local mall that had a play area---and that was the area the Pedi was seeing it from not our hometown. To be honest--she didn't itch and the rash bothered ME a lot more than her---til I had to keep her inside for a while during early June! <G> Hugs TX
Guest guest
There is nothing like Oatmeal for itching. I had a friend break out in a horrible rash from using a cheap shop. His hands were raw from scratching. You might not like this answer, but I immediately went to the nearest store and bought some Aveno lotion. If you don't have any oatmeal products available, go for the Aveeno, it has oatmeal in it. Or you COULD cut off the bottom part of some pantyhose, fill it with oatmeal and put it in the tub for an oatmeal bath. in Cambridge
Guest guest
If its really just a heat rash it should be located in folds of the skin such as the neck, the crease of the elbow and knees (rather than just on the stomach. If that is all it is (and you should be sure) I think a powder to keep the skin dry might be best. I make a powder from baking soda, corn starch and ground herb (lavender, sage, or rosemary). I sometimes put essential oils in it but that would be primarily for a deodorant powder than one for just heat rash.
