Guest guest
Hi Micheline, I actually remember having the opposite problem. My eyes were always filled with tears. The slightest breeze or cold would send the tears streaming down my face and everyone used to ask me " why are you crying? " . My surgeon did correct it... He repositioned my tear ducts by taking skin grafts from behind my ears and placing them at my lower lid. Those are my most visible scars although they did subside over the years but now that I'm getting a bit older these wonderful wrinkles are starting to outline and accentuate them. Also know that my surgery was done over 26 years ago and things have come a long way and they can do so much more now. You can see my pictures in the photo gallery under Tots. Wishing all the best for Giuliana Klein Melbourne, Florida, USA > > Hi everyone, > I have a question regarding absence of tears. My daughter Giuliana is almost 3 now and is waiting for her first surgery (correction of the epicanthal fold) that should take place sometime this summer. Since her birth, I had never seen tears from her eyes when she cries, but thought it was related to the BPES. However, last week at her routine eye check up, I mentionned it to the doctor and said they would do a scan to investigate, because it is not related. Has anyone encountered this, and if so, does it have to be corrected? Thanks for your help. > > Micheline > Montreal, Canada >
Guest guest
Michelene, My daughter Catalina (2.5 yo) has never had tears either. I brought this up to her pediatrician about 9 months or so ago. Her pediatrician suggested a possible surgery for it, but suggested that we talk to her surgeon about it first, as she thought it might be a part of her BPES. Both her surgeon and her pediatric opthamologist told us that it was common in BPES patients. When I brought it up to them, they started us on daily eye drops. They told us, she was making just enough "tears" with her eyes to keep them lubed, but they wanted us to give her the drops to keep them from drying out (which can cause many other problems). Now we give her GenTeal gel-drops in the morning, and as needed throughout the day, and at night we give her the GenTeal PM or Refresh Lacri-Lube eye ointment at night (thanks to everyone here who reccommended it to us!). Both are over-the counter and can be found in grocery stores and pharmacies. Our doctors told us to look at the whites of her eyes and watch for them to stay white, but come in immediately if they start to turn grey (as it means they are drying out). I know another family whose doctor has them dialate their son's eyes once a day. Everyone is different. It really does depend on your doctor's recommendation. By no means am I saying that this is the same situation with your child as everyone and every case is different, but it might be something to bring up to your pediatric opthamologist. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi there to you all! My daughter Payton has never had tears as we think of them either. She has enough moisture, and most likely produces tears, it's just the way that her lower lids hang that they never fill up and fall down her face as we would think of "tears" doing. This will be corrected later with another surgery down the line when we work on the lower lids. and PaytonHillsboro, Oregon USA From: Ann Rountree <themamacatt@...>Subject: Re: blepharophimosis Absence of tearsblepharophimosis Date: Monday, May 3, 2010, 10:45 AM Michelene, My daughter Catalina (2.5 yo) has never had tears either. Guest guest
Hi, Micheline, Wow, I haven't thought about that one in a very long time. My daughter, (age 24), never had a tear to show anyone. Of course she would cry, but because of the way her lower lids were set, the tears would not flow over and create the "tear drop" that is common to see. She would have wetness on the skin around her eyes if she would rub them after crying. We were reassured that her tear ducts were there and doing just fine. We never had to use any drops and she never had problems with dry eyes. I am a musician/songwriter and wrote a song about and her little eyes and in it I wrote a line that went..."and never have I had a tear that I could show to you". It's a personal heartfelt song that , her brother, Barry and I wrote all together when she was a toddler. Anyway, there was never any discussion of having hers corrected, but each person's situation is unique. I wish you and your daughter, Giuliana, all of the best! Guest guest
I have the worst of both worlds. My left eye never tears, and my right eye tears too much. The doctor (if I remember correctly) told me that my right eye has poor drainage, which causes the excessive tear buildup.I also have never had any discomfort, though the eye doctors tell me that my left eye is too dry, and always prescribe drops (which I never use). The only hassle I have had with this condition is that it makes it impossible to wear contact lenses. I actually tried when I was a teenager, and it was miserable.Hope this helps, MicahFrom: Clare Teale <clareteale@...>blepharophimosis Sent: Wed, May 5, 2010 6:19:44 PMSubject: Re: blepharophimosis Absence of tears I remember when emy was little she was told by Moorfields she had one tear duct in one corner of the eye and 2 in the other, never caused her any issues though. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your responses, which are all very interesting considering that everybody seems to have different experiences regarding the subject. In any case my daughter will be having a scan to see if there is blocage of the tear ducts, and we will take it from there. Thanks for your support, it is so much appreciated!
