Guest guest
Hi, My son, Abraham, was born at 26 weeks last April. With the eye concerns of nearsightedness heightened due to the oxygen he was on in the NICU for three months, his optomologist recommended to the surgeon to perform the vertical lift ASAP and worry about the horizontal surgery later. The surgeon has been thinking that perhaps the best solution is to do both at the same time. Has anyone had both surgeries at the same time? Or the lift and no horizontal surgery? Abe is 29in long, 22lbs... Thank you! Olivia Citrus Heights, CA, USA

There is a huge range … some people have very mild BPES, never having surgery. Others have severe BPES and require immediate treatment. In general, if vision isn’t affected, there are benefits for waiting. But of course, you should seek professional advice, and if you feel it necessary, ask for a second opinion.ShireenLondon, EnglandFrom: blepharophimosis [mailto:blepharophimosis ] On Behalf Of OliviaGSent: 07 March 2011 04:47blepharophimosis Subject: blepharophimosis Horizontal and Vertical Surgery at the same time Hi,My son, Abraham, was born at 26 weeks last April. Guest guest
Our experience is that sooner is better than later for surgery. McKenzie had an eye lift+slings at 1yr old and we saw a huge improvement in her development right away - she could see and she intereacted with us and her world so much more! > > Hi Shireen, > Thank you! > Olivia > > > > > ________________________________ > From: Shireen Mohandes <shireen@...> > blepharophimosis > Sent: Sun, March 6, 2011 11:31:03 PM > Subject: RE: blepharophimosis Horizontal and Vertical Surgery at the same time > >  > Hi Olivia > Here is a link that may help you: > http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/839075-overview > It was written by: > Author: Mounir Bashour, MD, CM, FRCS©, PhD, FACS,Assistant Professor of > Ophthalmology, McGill University; Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, > Sherbrooke University; >  > Last updated in June 2009. > It is written for medics, but you’ll be able to get a good grasp of what is > going on by arming yourself with a strong cup of coffee, and using Google to > search for medical terms which are unfamiliar to you. > Once you reach the bottom of the page, there are further links. > I am sure that people on this message board will tell you †" but in summary the > reasoning behind what needs to take place, and when, depends on the severity of > the condition, and how it affects vision. Guest guest
hello my name is Priscilla. My husband and I have a little boy that will be 3 on may 22nd. Not only does my son have BPES but my husband had it too. Peyton has had 1 full surgery, then he caught an infection in his right eye and was put in hospital for a week and a half. They had to go back in to get all infection out and take out all they had just put in to lift eyes. we got released from hospital and then had to go back 2 weeks later to have Peyton's right eye redone. His doctor here in ville, Florida at nemours' children's clinic said that he wants to wait on doing the both horizontal and vertical surgeries when he turns 5-6 yrs old. I want to get a 2nd opinion on his eyes and does anyone have any recommendations for me to look into? We would be really appreciative to have some other doctors to look into. Will be putting some pictures of peyton on here soon. Thanks, The Marlette Family ( Priscilla ) > > > > Hi Shireen, > > Thank you! > > Olivia > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: Shireen Mohandes <shireen@> > > blepharophimosis > > Sent: Sun, March 6, 2011 11:31:03 PM > > Subject: RE: blepharophimosis Horizontal and Vertical Surgery at the same time > > > >  > > Hi Olivia > > Here is a link that may help you: > > http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/839075-overview > > It was written by: > > Author: Mounir Bashour, MD, CM, FRCS©, PhD, FACS,Assistant Professor of > > Ophthalmology, McGill University; Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, > > Sherbrooke University; > >  > > Last updated in June 2009. > > It is written for medics, but you’ll be able to get a good grasp of what is > > going on by arming yourself with a strong cup of coffee, and using Google to > > search for medical terms which are unfamiliar to you. > > Once you reach the bottom of the page, there are further links. > > I am sure that people on this message board will tell you †" but in summary the > > reasoning behind what needs to take place, and when, depends on the severity of > > the condition, and how it affects vision. Guest guest
Priscilla, I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but we see a great Dr. in Philadelphia Pa. We are from ohio about 9 hours from there but seeing him has been worth it. Dr Katowitz came very highly recommended from this group. on April 20, 2010 my daughter had both eyes widened with wires and also verticlly with a sling. We will be headed back there in 2 weeks for a more permnent fix he is going to take muscle from her leg and place it in her eyelid. Something that impressed me is when we first went to see him, we were in his waiting room and I counted 5 patients who had BPES, I had never seen anyone other than my husband and daughter with it. If you want anymore info on him please feel free to send me a message and I will give you all the information I have. Guest guest
Priscilla,I second 's opinion! We traveled from Boulder, CO to see Dr. Katowitz. His staff is used to BPES patients traveling out of state and will work with you and help you with every detail. Well worth the expense and travel time!TawnyaBoulder, COOn Mar 16, 2011, at 8:12 AM, Barga wrote: Priscilla, I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but we see a great Dr. in Philadelphia Pa.
