Hi Diane.....I had a knee replacement last year, due to what we thought

was osteoarthritis, but was diagnosed as RA. It had totally destroyed

the kneee joint. If there is anyway that I can help, please email

me...sherri

Was the surgery a success? My Mother has thought of having joint replacement, but has been hesitant. Any and all thought would be appreciated. Thank you, Lee

Hi Sherri,

thanks for responding to my question.

How are doing with your knee replacement?

Did you try other methods before surgery?

I'm thinking of getting a second opinion, but I think they're going to say

the same thing.

Let me know how you are doing.

Diane

Hi Diane,

I have just recovered from this operation (14th May this year, right

elbow completely replaced, I found some information on the web about it and

it advised that it was a painful operation but I thought well, I've been

living with RA since I was 16 (now 39) and I know what pain is so that

should be fine..... Well, my physio told me there is around 50 muscles from

the shoulder down to the fingers and I reckon that everyone of them felt

like it was hit with a pick axe, and I thought, what have I done?

My elbow was very painful before the op, but now everything hurt, for

the first 3 weeks it was very, very sore, then it got better, and it keeps

getting better, the quality of movement is wonderful, no joint pain, things

that would have me back on drugs to cope with the pain for a couple of days

no are no problems, I can dig holes, I can mow lawns, etc... with no

residual pain in the elbow at all.

The only problem that has occurred has been that my elbow had been

fused into a 90 degree position for something like 17 years and as such the

muscles and tendons have shortened and also I believe the mind just doesn't

realise that it can move the arm in any sort of extension so a lot of

hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy and gym work to stretch everything out so

the range of movement (out to 30 degrees and back to 130 degrees is what we

are aiming for) gets to what we expect.

Negatives

very painful operation and recovery (but hey, they have drugs for that)

No driving for 6 weeks (approx.)

Positives

NO joint pain, quality of life much improved

Let me know if you have any more questions...

Hi Diane,

Yes, I tried numerous different therapies, and had 17 surgeries on

that knee prior to the replacement. I an not tell you how many Synvisc

and steroid injections I had in the knee oveer the years. Finally, the

knee joint just collapsed, as the RA ate away at it over the years. I

tell you, though, I am sooooooo glad that I had it done! I am finally

pain free in that knee since the age of 13!!!!! I am able to walk

normally again, and have my life back!!!!! It never hurts to get a 2nd

opinion!!!! It is your body!!!! How are you feeling?...sherri

Hi Diane,

Let me ask you a few questions about your elbow.

Is it just painful to move?

Has it decreased your range of motion to the point where it's

difficult to do common tasks?

Or is it a combination of the two?

Because my doctor at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN has discussed

a procedure with me that involves placing a donor Achilles tendon

into the joint to act as artificial cartilage. They also do some

joint resurfacing at the same time to get rid of any bone spurs that

you may have.

He said that this procedure is mostly for pain, but people do get an

increase in their range of motion as well. The advantage of going

for this surgery instead of joint replacement is you don't have the

limitations placed on you that comes with a total elbow. When you

go see the surgeon, be sure to ask him/her what you will not be able

to do anymore with the total elbow and see if it's worth it or not.

The procedure that my doctor at Mayo told me about is called:

" Arthroplasty with tendon interposition "

You won't find much information on this as it's not a very common

procedure. At least that's what they told me at Mayo.

Good Luck,

Phil

that surgery was ythe best decision of my life!!! It was worth all the

pain and rehab just to get my life back!!!!!! (I had to go through the

surgery twice as I fell 5 days post-op after the first operation) Feel
