Guest guest
Rich, You have lost 38 lbs. already??? WOW!!Rich <TowrOfStgh@...> wrote: Hi,All I can say to you regarding this issue (Band or RNY) is that everything will depend on one thing: How much do you trust yourself around food? I did an experiement w/ my band today. I'm on week 7 post-op (banded 1/31/2007) and I finally decided to give chicken a try for the 1st time today. I wanted to be extra-careful, so instead of following Dr. Aceves's advice (don't drink 30 minutes before and 2 hours afterwards), I had a huge-ass mug of water w/ my chicken. I ate 2 pieces of chicken (1 leg and 1 thigh), a small portion of veggies (about 4 oz.) and a thing of Jell-O (1st time I had Jell-O in 3 weeks). Let me tell you, I got it all down because of one thing: I was drinking water after every 2 bites. It was able to flush down the food past the area of the band, so I was able to eat a little more food. I'm glad I know this, because like everyone told me @ the hospital, the lap-band is a tool, not a solution. Think about this when you finally set about a date and put forth total conviction in making a life-long change to yourself. Needless to say, in the end this is your decision. You also have to ask yourself if work is really worth doing one type of surgery over the other. To me, work shouldn't even be in the equation: This is your life! Guest guest
OH BOY!! Rich, listen up!! Penny & I are telling you..follow the rules!! Get used to them, don't challenge them! Once you have a fill, you won't be able to do that or you will throw-up for sure!! You are only a few weeks out and you could probably have eaten all that food with out drinking water with it! Your band is just "hanging around" your stomach right now. Once it's filled it will be like a tight belt and you will certainly know you have restriction! It's not about trusting your self around food with the RNY or the Band. Both of these proceedures restrict your intake. But the band needs to be filled in order to work. Set up your first fill... You'll see, oh boy you will see!! Guest guest
Hi ! My daughter & I both had the band last year with Dr. A and it was fantastic! I have lost 67lbs/13 months. My daughter, Jacqui has lost 30lbs/9 months. I know you both will do great and I wish you all the best! Don't worry too much about gaining weight back. If you ask your mother, I'd bet she would tell you she needs and adjustment/fill. Due to being under stress, with your sister, she put herself on the back burner as many of us do, to care for others. When the stress is resolved, she will be able to focus on her goals again. The best thing about the band is it's adjustable..add some saline to lose...take some out if your losing too fast or it's too tight. It really is the key to reducing your weight along with exercise of some type..it does works, if you work with it. Hope you & your daughter have a wonderful journey! Hope your mom will be back on track soon ;-) Dana 2-1-06 200-133past goal! -------------- Original message -------------- From: " E" <henglis911@...> I think it is because my mom gained soem weight back and it mede me nervous.> >> > My daughter (17) and I are both going to Mexicali in early June (no > set date yet) > > We are very excited. Guest guest
even though i love my band - if i was to do it over again i think i would have the rny. the band can be very painful if you are not careful with your food, the sliming, the pb'ing - i could do without these things. although then with the rny you have malabsorbtion to deal with. caprise E <henglis911@...> wrote: I think it is because my mom gained soem weight back and it mede me nervous.> >> > My daughter (17) and I are both going to Mexicali in early June (no > set date yet) > > We are very excited. Guest guest
I say that once in a while....But the reality is, the grass is always greener on the other side. I see so many posts about RNY'ers complaning on how they are able to eat way to much. Guess what. there is no solution for that problem!!! If I can eat to much I get a fill. Problem solved. It is painful to get something stuck. But how does it feel to dump? I hear stories of people dumping in public. The EMT were called. How embarassing is that. RNY'ers are now talking about Band over Bypass. There are a million reasons I got the band. Sure I am a slowwww loser and wish it would move faster. I am also glad that eating reeses peanut butter cup wont make me sick....(only 1 once a week) KIra ---- caprise holmes <capriseholmes@...> wrote: > even though i love my band - if i was to do it over again i think i would have the rny. the band can be very painful if you are not careful with your food, the sliming, the pb'ing - i could do without these things. although then with the rny you have malabsorbtion to deal with. > > caprise > > E <henglis911@...> wrote: > I think it is because my mom gained soem weight back and it mede me nervous. > > > > > > > My daughter (17) and I are both going to Mexicali in early June (no > > set date yet) > > > We are very excited. Guest guest
Dana, Since I had my chicken escapade, I've been sticking w/ soups and protein shakes. I kinda got freaked out when I went to some of the Obesity boards because of some of the horror stories I read about people who tried to " beat " the band. I want to get my 1st fill already, but it's hard to schedule the time away from work so I can fly back down to San Diego. Yes, I considered going to another doctor right here in the NYC metro area, but I want my 1st fill...hell maybe even the 2nd fill done by people that are familliar w/ my case. I don't feel like going to a complete stranger and having it done by them when they haven't even operated on me! The earliest I think I can get my ass down there is in May 9th, but I hope I can make it there sooner so I can really feel the restriction that I believe I need to drop the weight and live a normal life again. Thanks for the words of wisdom: I'll take them to heart. Guest guest
Thanks Penny...been following the rules since my chicken escapade, but to me it wasn't that bad considering the fact that it was my 1st post-op slip. Guest guest
Jane, Well it's not so much watching what I'm eating, but starting w/ week 6, I started to do more than just walk an hour/day. I also go on a stair-master @ the gym and just yesterday I bowled my 1st game since my surgery. In a nutshell, daily exercise + the lower intake of food = weight loss. Making sure to get in that exercise makes all the difference IMO. Hey, it doesn't have to be like running a marathon to work, ya know? She does not use flouro but refers you to a floro dr when she can't find the port or suspects that there is a problem. > > Dana, > Who do u see in maryland? Guest guest
Hiya! Just wanted to say thanks for this site and the mini lecture/reviews that you send out when someone joins up. As a tech who's been certified for 5 years now, I've found that they (the mini lectures/reviews) are a good reference to jog the memory. In fact, I used the " Alligations I " review at work last week when making some Formalin 2% solution (from a 10% stock solution) for a patient. I've always been a fan of that method of calculating quantities for extemporaneous compounding (numbers frighten me, but I know Allegation to be my own penultimate " Idiot's Guide " for figuring out how to dilute stock prduct to a desired strength and feel quite confident using that method) and since I couldn't find our master work sheet/recipe and the only other completed worksheet I could find was incorrect, I zipped over here to dig up the Allegation lesson and figured it out without having to bug the pharmacists. Guest guest
Dear , You are most welcome to any and all information I have. It is a pleasure and an honor to serve you, others like you who are experienced techs and others who are studying for the PTCB exam. What kudos for the site that an experienced tech used the site to help him/her on the job and as a refresher! I wanted you to know there are many, many more Tutorials and Reviews as you call them in the files section, in addition to the ones that I send out. Do you have any topic suggestions? Special needs? How about letting our PTCB students know more about Formalin 2%? Use, specific handling etc. Since you are in Canada, your displayed appreciation is even more of an honor to me. Again thank you for your kind words and please keep us informed how else you use this site. Respectfully, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Founder/Owner K <kates_island_adventure@...> wrote: Hiya! Anyway, just wanted to say hello and thanks... this place is good for review for everyone, including us certified techs. -Kate Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands Vancouver, BC, Canada

Guest guest
Ebony, Hello I too have both deformities on my right hand I have 2 swan neck ( first 2 fingers) and 2 boutineers (ring finger and pinky). I still drive but I do have problems with getting gas cap off. I know there are some devices to help with that. I usually have my teenagers to take it off for me. As for the steering wheel I use my thumbs to hold the steering wheel. Hope this helps. Good luck to you!!! Trudy --- In , " Ebony " <stillbreathing29@...> wrote: > > Hi to all newcomers. Guest guest
Thanks Trudy, I have had help with the driving part and a few other things. My husband used to do those things for me. However, i am flying solo these days and need to learn ways of doing those painful things on my own. You msg helped however. i will just to search for those devices you mentioned. Full service seems to be a thing of the past at the pumps. Many blessings to you. I do understand how it feels to have severely limited use of the hands. Take care, Ebony
Guest guest
Hi, Ebony, Long time no hear from you! I understand about the finger thing. I spent a lot of time at the OT for help with my fingers. I have trigger finger in all of my fingers, okay, I just have tendonitis all over my hands. ack. Right now they are mostly straight with the help of finger splints and the weirdest little finger exercises. but I digress. Go to a auto parts store, there are knobs you can attach to most steering wheels that will help with turning the wheel to drive. If you do not have a handicap placard yet, get one. In California, one of the things that the placard will do for you is gas stations have to pump your gas for you at self-serve prices. That's as long as you go to a gas station that has at least two people working at it. But if you make it a practice to always go to the same gas station, they will get used to the idea. I've had to ask for help on occasion, usually I just ask someone to help who is also getting gas. For me it's not getting the gas cap off, it is squeezing the pump handle to make the gas go. Can't do that on a good day without pain. Nice to see you back, work is going well?

Guest guest
Hi Debbie! Welcome! I don't have a lot of advice to give you on your situation, just some compassion and some big hugs. My niece has been going through almost an identical situation to what you've described with your daughter. Her parents switched schools for her just this year and so far, touch wood, things are MUCH better. She too was being bullied and harassed [police ended up being involved at some points]. It would wane and then come back again. Her parents really had no other options other than to remove her from that toxic environment. I'm so sorry that you and your family are going through this. Big hugs, Tea
Guest guest
Hi, Tea! Thanks for the advice! I spoke to about changing schools - the school district would have to pay for her to go somewhere else. She doesn't want to change because her only real friend goes to this school. She said if she changes schools, then it's like they won, and she won't let them win. Deb In a message dated 10/8/2007 8:41:15 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, tea@... writes: Hi Debbie! Welcome!
