Guest guest
Hi , I sure have heard of other members here discuss the same very thing you speak of. It is different for everyone, the where, how much, if at all. I did not loose pigment, however, my hair significantly lightened, and I do not mean gray, just much lighter. Guest guest
: Rashes and pigment changes are a side effect of Gleevec, however it would be helpful if you could tell us how big are all of them (are they all the same size) and how much pigment change is there. Are the spots pink are do they just vary a little from your normal skin color? And while other may have experienced the same thing, you need to know that we support you and understand your concern. I am sorry you were diagnosed so young, but you should not let this stop you from your dreams. Matt Florida In a message dated 2/10/2009 6:34:47 P.M. However, as of recent I have developed a strange new symptom that has even perplexed my oncologist. On my forearms I have quarter sized spots where my skin has lost pigment. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced such symptoms. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group! Loss of skin pigment (hypopigmentation) is a well documented and common side effect of Gleevec. Here is just one of many articles outlining the issue. In this article, they found the side effect occurred in 40.9% http://tinyurl.com/dc54c6 The reason for the change in skin colour is because of Gleevec's effect on an enzyme called c-kit. C-kit plays a role in melanocyte production and melanocytes are responsible for giving us our skin colour. While some lose skin colour evenly all over (generalized), others will lose it in patches (localized). Interestingly while many have lost pigment in their skin, a small number have actually found an increase in pigment in their hair which has returned their previously grey hair to its natural colour. For me personally, I lost skin pigmentation generally all over giving me a very pasty white complextion. I also found that my hair got darker which prompted me to finally get highlights. Guest guest
All the list mates have given you good information. The only thing I haven't seen yet is that when you are out in the sun you should use a lot of skin blocker. I am an old brown-skinned country boy and have been mistaken for South Pacific native that loves his sun and rarely in my life sunburned, even when I was on the ocean in the south Pacific. My ONC had warned me to be sure and put on the sun blocker. Any time I travel in a car I must remember to to do this or I will sunburn in about an hour. We come here for one reason, to learn all we can about this disease. Don't hesitate to call upon us for any questions. My skin is not turning white, it has large brown blothes on my arms. Go figure. Guest guest
I guess effects are different depending on people. My scars heal darker. I have a very northern Europe type, but scars are brownish. It started well before gleevec so it have more to do with the cml. It does get infected more easily. I don't sunburn more than before gleevec, I am outdoors a lot, ocean and mountains and didn't notice a difference. I try to use suncream but sometime I forget. Marcos.
