Guest guest
Sharon, I had to laugh when you talked about your little finger -- I had the same thing. It would kind of seize up. My right foot too. I started taking neurontin for that, which helped, but brought other side effects and in the end it wasn't worth it. That bone pain will be around for a few weeks then leave for a while. When it got really severe I paused on the Gleevec for a few days and the interruption helped. When it gets bad I take ibuprofin, and if it gets really bad an oxycodone. From: serenitywon@... Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2009 19:45:09 +0000 Subject: [ ] Severe bone/joint/muscle pain Hello everyone, I was Dx with CML May 29,08.I started on 400mg Gleevec then advanced to 600mg Gleevec.I have alot of side effects. My current one bothering me the most right now is Bone/joint/muscle pain.I have swelling and such severe pain in my little fnger that I actually thought I broke it.Went for xrays but it isn't broke..My entire body just aches.Where ever you touch it hurts.Arms.legs and back worse areas. Here are my current CBC results and a few other labs that came back abnormal. Total white blood count is 6.9 up from 3.5 two weeks ago Neutrophiles 4.7 up from 2.9 two weeks ago Lympocytes 2.0 up from 1.3 Monocytes 0.2 up from 0.1 Hemoglobin 10.9 up from 10.5 Hematocrit 31.8 up from 30.3 Platelets 338 up from 270 My total protein level is low at 5.3 Globulin is low at 1.6 my ALT/SGPT is High at 58 (what does this mean?) Ionized Calcium is high at 4.8 Ferritin is 142 I have such pain it feels like I have broken bones. Is this a normal side effect from Gleevec? I have had to do iron infusions a few times and it seems my pain level is higher when my hemoglobin drops below 12.I beg for more infusions as it helps control my pain level when my hemoglobin is higher.I currently take M.S.Contin every 12 hours and Norco every 3-4 hours.I am still in extreme pain even with daily heavy narcotics.I have been on this pain meds for years prior to CML and was helping with the pain it was perscribed for (hips, back, knees).Since my Dx it isn't helping much it seems however I wouldn't want to miss even one dose as I am in such pain with the meds I can't imagine what I would be like without the meds.I see my Onc today.Any ideas? Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles with pain. There are a few people who have experienced similar problems but thankfully they are few and far between. Such extreme pain is not the norm. I'm not quite sure why you're getting iron infusions if your ferritin is 142. That's a number I can only fantasize about! My ferritin has only once been in the 30 range and recently was a mere 11. Your ALT is only slightly elevated. This is a liver enzyme but yours isn't nearly high enough to worry about. It has to triple and quadruple before they start to worry about that. Your total protein and globulin are barely low, not enough that would concern me and could probably be attributed to lack of absorption issues given your WLS. Your calcium looks normal to me, maybe your lab has a different range than mine but it doesn't look odd at all to me and the rest of your counts are all normal. Hope you find some relief from the pain soon, Tracey > > Hello everyone, > I was Dx with CML May 29,08.I started on 400mg Gleevec then > advanced to 600mg Gleevec.I have alot of side effects. My current one > bothering me the most right now is Bone/joint/muscle pain.I have > swelling and such severe pain in my little fnger that I actually > thought I broke it.Went for xrays but it isn't broke..My entire body > just aches.Where ever you touch it hurts.Arms.legs and back worse > areas. > Here are my current CBC results and a few other labs that came back > abnormal. > > Total white blood count is 6.9 up from 3.5 two weeks ago > Neutrophiles 4.7 up from 2.9 two weeks ago > Lympocytes 2.0 up from 1.3 > Monocytes 0.2 up from 0.1 > Hemoglobin 10.9 up from 10.5 > Hematocrit 31.8 up from 30.3 > Platelets 338 up from 270 > My total protein level is low at 5.3 > Globulin is low at 1.6 > my ALT/SGPT is High at 58 (what does this mean?) > Ionized Calcium is high at 4.8 > Ferritin is 142 > > > I have such pain it feels like I have broken bones. Is this a normal > side effect from Gleevec? Guest guest
Tracey, Thanks for looking over my labs.My ferritin is currently 142 not when I was having my infusions.I do have alot of vit/min deficiencies due to wls.My levels drop real quick as I don't really absorb much of what I eat of supplement. I saw my Dr today and he went over my recent labs.My Primary Dr ordered Thyroid panel and Arthritis panel. All came back ok.So they don't explain the pain either. The Dr. says he really believes the increased pain is due to Gleevec and even though I am having great results with it at 600mg he wants to cut it back to 400 and hope we keep the same levels.I have had a 3 log reduction and am barely detecting the Philidelphia Chromosom at all.He wants to keep it that way but is concerned with my QOL.So I will go back in 3 weeks for a CBC.See the Dr again in 4 weeks.Retest PCRU in 2 months and hope for pain/symptom improvement without decline in levels. Thanks again SharonS In , " Tracey " <traceyincanada@...> wrote: > > Hi Sharon, > > I'm sorry to hear of your struggles with pain. Guest guest
Sharon, Sorry to hear your having such pain. My bone pain went away for a few months but came back worse later. I take 4 500mgs of Loritab a day(sometimes more) and that helps. I am trying to remain with the same pain medication level as long as I can sense it does not seem like it is going to go away for good. Hang in there and like was mentioned if your Doc is not listening get a new one. Guest guest
Terry, Sorry to hear you are also having the same pain issues as I am.My Dr. has decreased my dose of Gleevec from 600 mg to 400 and we hope to remain at a 3 log reduction with these changes.I am worried but I just can't deal with the pain.I am not unaccustumed to pain as I have had this chronic pain since well before DX of CML however it has gotten worse.Much worse and after 9 months of gleevec it has not gotten better but worse yet. My Dr seems to be listening well.He is not an expert but then there are none in my area.Only a few Dr.s here that have any knowledge of CML.I am not financially able to travel and probably couldn't handle a long trip physically either so I will stick with what I have available. Thanks for your reply and hope you feel better. SharonS #1226 In , Terry Dailey <terrydailey@...> wrote: > > Sharon, > > Sorry to hear your having such pain. Hang in there and like was mentioned if your Doc is not listening get a new one. Guest guest
, I'm sure there are all types of pain treatments available.I am very limited on what I can take.I have had Gastric Bypass surgery.I am not allowed to use asprin or Ibuphrophin type products. No anti inflamatories at all.I have had severe pain for years and can not function without pain meds. This has been an issue even before my DX of CML. I am not worried about addiction.I am dependant on the narcotics..I need them to function.I am dependant upon them as in the sense that I need them to function not in the sense that I Crave/want them..I worry more about my liver and test regularly for liver functions.I would rather live a life that I can some what function in for a shrter time than live a long long life filled with pain and misery only existing laying in a bed unable to function.I do what I have to.. to get out of bed and move somewhat.I am lucky to have 1-2 good days a week that I am not stuck in bed in misery and that is with pain meds.I can not even imagine my life without pain meds.. Guest guest
Bless you, Sharon, you are sure in my prayers. I share your point of view completely! I keep waiting for things to get " back to normal, " duh. It's sinking in that what I am thinking of as " normal " would better be described as " the past, " and move on -- doing what works for that precious one to two productive days, as you say, and make the most of them. Guest guest
Amen on the pain meds, The bottom line is if you take any pain meds for a long time that are made from opiates they do become addictive, but in my case as in some others it is not a question of wanting them, I have to have them to function. They have a different effect on me then most people and sort of give me energy instead of making me loopy, and they help me tolerate the pain. I understand completely where you are coming from about being normal again. I had to come to realize what was normal for me will never be again and that helped me mentally allot. Still sucks not being able to work, but I am managing to survive. Thanks SharonS I hope you feel better as well. Just do like I do and hang in there:) Terry Dxed 04 I forgot my number but I am in complete remission so far On Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 9:18 PM, Rosen Lum <rrosenlum@...>wrote: > > Bless you, Sharon, you are sure in my prayers.
