Guest guest
Not close enough to be a threat...just close enough to make the air almost unbearable. I don't know where Dr. G. lives, however. I hope his home isn't near any of the fire areas! Donna fires how close are they to dr g? Alice, I was affected indirectly I guess you could say. The fires were right across the San Bernarnino mountains from us. I left for the ALDA con not knowing what would happen with the fires. My friend Judy called for an update from her daughter in law and was told they might have to evacuate! She lives in the same town we do but farther out, closer to the mountain. I called my husband on the cell phone and found out the wind had shifted and all the smoke and ashes were falling on our town. The sun had turned red and visability was almost zero. He told me he was glad I was not there. Needless to say, my cell phone was attached to me at all times during the convention for updates. A rumor had surfaced that one of my friends businesses " The Summit Inn " at the top of the Cajon Pass had burned down. My husband said he could not confirm this but one of his patients came in with that news. Turned out not to be true.....thank God!! One of my daughters very good friends had a compound with three family homes on five acres. They lost everything. Three generations of family displaced until they can rebuild. They are grateful everyone is ok. We were told if things kept up the way they were, that we might not be able to drive home after the convention was over. In the end everything was alright and we were able to go home as planned. The air quality here is different. Even though the fires are contained for the most part, I guess the smoldering ashes are still affecting the air. There are a lot of respiratory complaints locally. I guess we lucked out, the wind shifted back and thankfully we are all safe. Deb
Guest guest
Hi everyone Yes the n Fires are a national disaster is on the East Coast of Australia Last count over 7000 people homeless - some 1800 + properties lost Over 200 people have died and many more are injured, burnt and hospitalised In one area of the fires it has been reported over 1 million animals lost excluding stock and domestic pets Near my home there was a plea from the n Horse Council and Association for all spare horse tack, buckets, halters. rugs and lead ropes etc - within no time at all - 4 containers were filled up and this week-end trucks and heading east - There are charity groups calling for donations, people are having fetes and collecting money - the Australian Red Cross has had a hot line for donations and TV Stations have been having telethons - in 3 days some $45 Million or so has been donated. It the money is still coming in - perhaps we should do this type of charity to help with the recession in each locality Just amazing peoples kindness when things are tough - everyone has been touched somehow Fantastic stories of survival and terrible stories of loss are being advertised on TV and media every day. I live on the West coast of Australia and there are a number of local bush fires that we are also contending with - possibly not reported - certainly not on the scale that of the n Fires. Obviously fire bugs have started these. Our local fire burnt some 80 hectares and we had to make a decision to stay or leave - thank god the wind changed. You can still smell the smoke from the bush fire - imagine what the smell must be like for those who are in - would be ash and smoke all over - Just terrible - Sam the Koala is the icon of the Fires and her drink of water act has gone on U-Tube etc - bless her little heart She has found a friend named Bob at the Animal Shelter - (isn't love grant - he is another Koala by the way not human) Sue
