When I started Gleevec, my Onc wants me to go back in one month for more blood tests. Is that the norm? It seems I've been reading weekly checks are the norm at first. Guest guest
Hi Robin, I had weekly tests for about 1 month and (asked twice to go to the ER in between). It may depend on your initial blood counts, I had 250k WBC. If you are close to the normal range (5k to 10k) the dr may be less concerned. The NCI guidelines say weekly tests until blood remission. Guest guest
I can't find the treatment guideline I was referring to, but below is a link to the current European one. They are now recommending blood test every two weeks until complete blood remission. It used to be every week but I guess with most patients doing well they relaxed it a bit. http://tinyurl.com/b7kqoa Marcos On Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM, longing4sunnsand <rjkjak76@...> wrote: > My white count was 141,000 so maybe that's why. > Robin > > >> >> >> >> When I started Gleevec almost 5 years ago I went weekly. Guest guest
I went in once a week at the beginning. It seems to me that went on for at least a couple months. From: rjkjak76@... Guest guest
I went weekly for about two months, then every 2 weeks for several more months, then every 3 weeks for a few months. I only got to monthly tests around 9 months. I think when a person is brand newly diagnosed it's important to monitor the blood counts closely because you don't know how they will react to the drug. We've had members develop liver toxicity and didn't even know it because it was so long between blood tests. Others developed neutropenia (their blood counts went too low) and needed to take a break from the drug until their counts bounced back up. These problems can only be found if someone is being monitored closely. Tracey dx Jan 2002
Guest guest
When someone is in remission, do they still take the Gleevec?
