Guest guest
Hi everyone, I totally agree with Melt. I have been on between 40-80 mg of pred. for the last 5 yrs & can honestly say that the side effects have driven me to insanity--I now have gastric issues & have gained 90 pounds, not to mention other problems--however, without this medication, I can't walk and the stiffness is unbearable. I absolutely HATE being on this stuff, however, whenever my doctor tells me I have to " up the dose " , I go with it, only because I want to walk (even if that attempt to walk is pitiful). Yes, the side effects are difficult to handle, but then again, so are the side effects of the other meds we take. Each and every one of these meds have there own " issues " , but we are willing to take them....so why not the prednisone? Because of the weight? Well, I hate being this big, but unfortunately, it's a necessary evil to be able to move. Think about it......most (if not ALL) of the NSAIDS & DMARDS cause weight gain, even though the docs don't tell you that. Would we all stop taking them just because of the weight? Personally, I wouldn't. MTX Has it's own horrible side effects, but does that stop us from trying it in the hopes that it will help? No..... Please, don't go against your doctor's attempt to help you. Stop and think about where we would all be if none of these medications existed. Our docs are only trying to help us. Maybe one day the " experts " will come up with a solution that will eliminate the side effects we currently deal with. Until then, I'll deal with them, and accept my new " look " . Please don't jeopardize your health by going against your doctors............I would rather look at all of you in a " prednisone puff up " than see you all in hospital beds, crippled beyond belief.............. with love, Chris greywolf70@... My dear friends; Marilyn, , Traci, and I know of others that have stated lately they may not take the prescribed dose of Prednisone thier doctors have told them to take. You all know I love you dearly and have had my years of Prednisone, but I am very conserned when so many say they shall go against doctors treatment because of weight gain, etc, so forth and side affects. When we choose to put our lives in someones hands, we should listen and if we don't agree with the treatment seek another opinion. I have hated this disease over and over just as much as any one of us but you must know that this disease is not kind and does not care what you look like or what you want, just as we ourselfs should only do what is recommended regarless of our looks. If you were told you had cancer and yes you would lose your hair or die then I would hope it wouldn't matter about your hair. Well the medication Prednisone is the same. We hate it!!! BUT we take it in hopes of living a less crippled pain filled life. I would rather hug you big or small than mourn the effects of this illness with you. Always with love, Pattymelt
Guest guest
FYI: I had a lot of problems and side effects from prednisone. I switched to Methylprednisone, and the swelling and weight gain subsided a great deal. If you are having problems with PREDNISONE, ask your doc about switching to METHYPREDNSONE. -Brent Re: To everyone taking Prednisone Hi everyone, I totally agree with Melt. Guest guest
Melt, Brent and everybody else on steroids, Ditto here, Brent, on the methylprednisolone. I find I get a lot less edema, though I also don't get the euphoria I used to with prednisone. I had switched due to some info from someone here on the list. With the prednisone, I swelled so bad that the " bottom " of my feet were round and swollen! On prednisone I definitely gained weight! On methylprednisolone, I am losing weight, slowly but surely! That's the best of both worlds! They may be in the same drug category, but all meds do react different. It might be a good idea for everyone to remember that if they're having a problem with one particular medication, to ask their doc to try another med in that same genre of medications.
