Guest guest
Ignore last post, it got cut-off Welcome to the post-Gleevec weight gainers club. My weight has skyrocketed since starting Gleevec. I have tried everything. Finally, I have started an exercise regimine that it keeping it under control. It is called Couch to 5K. You can find it on the internet. It is a running program to build yourself up from nothing to running a 5K in 9 weeks. You have to commit 3 days a week for 30 minutes. After gaining nearly 80 pounds since I started Gleevec, I have finally started to control my weight. I am not dieting (except for cutting out all cakes, cookies, and junk food), and I lost 5 pounds the first week. The exercise is helping me suppress my appettite also. Listen, this stinks. I know. But I think that extra exercise is the only answer. Guest guest
weight watchers has worked for me. It took me a while to lose it, but it is gone and thats what matters. I got DX in 2003 and in 2007 I had gained 30lbs ( i'm only 5ft tall ) In Sept of 2007 I said no more and I started weight watchers, and of January of this year the 30lbs is gone. I am back to my normal weight, it might not work for everybody but it worked for me. Guest guest
20 pound weight gain here. I completed two 1/2 marathons and didn't lose a pound. It seems that I'm finally starting to drops some weight after 2 years on Gleevec. I'm trying to spend more time in the gym and eat more fruits and veggies. I always feel like I have to overeat when I take the Gold because I get sick if there is not enough density; protein etc. I hate when it makes me sick. So I eat more than I really want to - just to avoid being sick- I'm sure taht doesn't help my weight. Then I try to compensate by not eating other meals- which of course isn't jhealthy. If anyone has a good eating plan - I'd be interested. Guest guest
Chi, I'm afraid I don't have a good eating plan, but just wanted to respond. I've got the same 20 pound weight gain in 2.5 years on 400mg Gleevec. I, too, overeat at the meal (dinner) when I take Gleevec in order not to get sick. I know I am way less active than pre-Gleevec days. I seem to have little " get up and go. " And, for sure, I do my fair share of " emotional eating. " So, all in all, I bet that Gleevec is not totally responsible for my entire weight gain. Guest guest
JoAnn and Chi I is m belief that the drugs ( gleevec and tasigna both) do cause weight gain. I have gained on both, and about the same amount: 20 pounds. However, I have tried to diet, and find that at most, I can lose about 10 pounds. The rest I cannot budge. In my sense of my own body, I believe it to be water weight. When I took diuretics, it went off. They were not good for me so I quit and since, am able to only lose 10 at best. I am less active as well because the joint and bone pain is restraining with walking or any kind of exercise. My sympathies to both of you - I know how you feel. As well, it might surprise you to know the leg rash(blisters and scabbing) is back as well and this time, on both front calfs...and the end of my nose!1 Blessings to all Barb > > Chi, > I'm afraid I don't have a good eating plan, but just wanted to respond. > I've got the same 20 pound weight gain in 2.5 years on 400mg Gleevec. Guest guest
I was glad to see this post. I have mentioned it through the years, and I have gained a lot of weight. I think mine is a combination of the Gleevec and Emotional Eating. Can anyone relate to that? I tryed Weight Watchers because I know it works. I did it years ago, and lost weight. Now nothing seems to work for me, plus I am in terrible pain with Arthritis, and a bad back. I tryed to exercise, but all it did was put me in more pain and put my back out. Also, I know if you do not exercise you will not tone up what you lost. I just want to start losing first. I think we do need a club for weight loss or something. Guest guest
I don't post often, as I seldom have something to add. But I have exp with this. I quickly gained 20 lbs after starting gleevec in May 05, partly due to edema, and I also upped my calories with my pill in the evening to avoid the nausea. As my side effects improved over the 1st year, the swelling continued. I tried every topical thing on my eyes to no avail. But when I cut my sodium intake to about 1500 mg a day, it made a tremendous difference. I take my pill at bedtime with protein to avoid nausea, but instead of the 500-1000 calories I used initially, now I take it with cheese or peanut butter, maybe 100-200 calories. I wanted to be a healthy eater, not necessarily a " dieter " anymore. Some things that have guided me are a book called " Superfoods Rx " and books about anti-inflammatory foods. When I am disciplined about eating right, which sadly isn't often enough, I feel better, and the anti-inflammatory eating seems to help with the joint discomfort. At one point, I had lost the 20 cml pounds and another 20-25 beyond that. But, discipline in this area isn't easy for me, and I have gained back about 15. And the salt amazes me--when I indulge, the swelling is almost immediate. So, what has worked for me is lower salt, about 1500 calories a day featuring fiber rich foods, spinach, salmon, soy products, cheese, salmon, fruit, vegetables and green tea. And the support group was mentioned, losing weight with cml. I think Tracey started it, and it was helpful to me when I took the time to use it. I hope this helps. I notice your post really struck a chord with the group. So thanks for reminding me that once again, I'm not alone.--- In , " ivanduran2008 " <iduran@...> wrote: > > HAs every one gained weight once on Gleevec? Guest guest
I too ate lots and lots to avoid the nausea. Since I took it at night to sleep through the side effects, I felt like I was doing the very bad thing of eating a huge meal before bedtime. Now, I seem to have a strategy that works for my body. 100 calorie pack of popcorn and milk. Usually about a cup. A 100 calorie bagel will also work, but not as well. I haven't LOST any wieght, but recently I seem to be holding steady. Exercise hurts my hip joints... even going for a walk 1/4 mile is painful. Doc told me to keep walking anyway, but it is hard to do knowing that I am going to be paying for it for 2 days! My hubby found out his cholesterol was WAY too high, so he is eating much healthier... as the rest of the family is more slowly trying to change some of our eating habits into more healthy tool Tammy _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of kathymhyland Sent: Thursday, March 26, 2009 2:41 AM Subject: [ ] Re: Weight and GLEEVEC I don't post often, as I seldom have something to add.
