I am sure his 11 month old sister is exposed to it, and might get it

too. in that case, is it risky? will se be protected of it all her

life as she got it undear age 1 year?

I had chicken pox when I was 7 months old... No problems. I have been exposed

to it many many times since then and have never gotten them again. I think

that's a myth that a child under 1 who comes down with cp won't develop lifelong

immunity to it.

It is important to NOT give anything to reduce fever, such as

Tylenol. I've heard that oatmeal baths help with the itching, but

I'm not sure how much oatmeal to put in the bath. What state do you

live in? I'm looking for chickenpox to expose my daughter to.

Hi

It shouldn't be too much of a worry, we all get it in the uk and

there's no vax here. The treatment is to make the child comfortable

and try to reduce the itching, calamine lotion, some oats in a cloth

bag in the bath water (cool baths), no rubbing of spots - pat dry

after a bath etc etc. As normal, rest, vitamins generally and it

should be fine. Not sure if the cough is related? i don't think so -

maybe he has a virus too?

The 11 month old may not catch it though exposed. At 11 months i

wouldn't be too concerned, i know lots of babies who've had it

younger and been fine. The 1 year thing is more an issue with say

whooping cough etc - chicken pox isn't half as bad.

The protection thing -whatever age, they have a good chance of full

immunity, normally you only get it once. This is a benefit over the

vaccine here.

Vitamin A is generally for measles, I'd just say keep watching how

they are, but generally it should just be an annoying rash that

should pass on it's own.

Actually I would never have thought to not give solids with chicken pox. When

my kids are sick, if they feel like eating, I let them. If they don't I just

keep encouraging liquids. I go with what their body's are saying.

I never stopped giving mine solids - she ate according to appetite and taste

and we just carried on as usual. The only thing I did was keep her indoors

and monitor for fever - of which there was very little.

Giving fluid only could be counter-productive over a period of time, Mona.

She needs nourishment. If you were still breastfeeding, it'd be different,

but I would say that's the only time it would be beneficial to withhold

solid food. Offer it, see if she wants it, and feed her when she does. Try

with something simple like fruit - if you want to hold back on protein,

don't give high-protein foods.

I had told Mona, I think, to give only fluids in the initial stages as body

doesn't need to be working on digesting food when in the acute phase and

that may be why she wasn't giving solids. Not sure. But it doesn't have

to be for along time.

Thanks for stepping in Sheri. I did take your advice for the first few days and

went slow. I had also read that also. She is now back to solid foods with no

problem. It made sense to me in the beginning though. Thank you. Mona

Subject: Chickenpox

Hi Everyone,

I just found out that our friends son has come down with the chickenpox. I am

really hoping

that my 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter (both unvaxed) will get it now

also. I haven't

had a chance to take the homeopathic course yet, I am hoping to take the one

starting in

March so I was hoping someone could tell what would be the best course of action

to help

get them through it as smoothly as possible.

Thanks so much, I have learned so much from this group and I am so grateful for

it.

How old is the kid with it? Also, is there a chance he got it from a vaxed

person? It would be bad for your kids to get the vax strain because it does not

give the same immunity.

Regarding the vax strain, do we know that it does not give the same

At this stage, how would we ever know what strain is occurring?

Well, my husband just talked to the boys mom and she took her son to the Dr.

this morning

and he said he isn't sure it is chickenpox. He says because the boy is vaxed

there isn't a

good chance it is. I laughed and told my husband that that is the excuse Dr's

give when

someone comes down with a " vaccine preventable " disease and they have been

vaxed. The

doctor told her that he thinks it might be a viral infection. The little boy is

almost 3, and he

did have the chickenpox vax. I guess I will just have to wait and see if my son

gets it. I

didn't get to talk to her so I am not sure if anyone else in his daycare has it.

I will try to find

out from her. I will post more if my son shows any symptoms.

Thanks,

Tomi

Chicken Pox is best as a child hood disease. My son (I was 27 at the time) had

the pox during christmas break then my daughter caught it. Needless to say i

caught it as well. I was working climbing pipe racks so was working outside. I

whad a  couple bumps not aware were the pox.. In being in the cold the pox went

inside so the Dr informed me. My lungs were full of chicken pox and wound up

with a  vacation in the hospital for 14 days. (The Er dr's were flipping because

another woman had come in few hours before me same problem she died.

Adults do not fair as well as children when we get the childhood disease. I

have heard you could get a shot of gamagoblin (spelling) to prevent a severe

case do not know if this is true today.  Just for grins I would get the booster

shot and also are the pox not contagious if they are not full of puss. Not sure

any more.

Subject: [ ] chickenpox

Hi everybody,

I know this subject was discussed several times here but I could use a

refresher. I am flying to France Saturday for 20 days vacations with

my mom, brother, his wife and two little angels. But angel #1 just got

a chickenpox assault, skin lesions started yesterday. Angel #2 has a

fair chance to get it also. I was supposed to babysit her from Sunday

to Thursday but that obviously won't happen, although I ll be in

contact with my mother who is nursing her right now. Thursday next

week we all be going to a ski resort and then I will be in contact

with both of my nephews. I dunno if I ever got chickenpox, my brother

tested negative so I am not too optimistic about that, and I got a

blood draw to check it this morning, I ll know Friday. When I told my

2 oncs (the one from here and the one in Paris) they had slightly

divergent opinions. The one in Paris (cml specialist) recommends

getting a vaccine if the test is negative and says there is no

contraindication (my blood counts are normal, wbc 4.2, anc 2.7). The

onc from kaiser says I shouldn't get the vaccine even if the test is

negative. Now I am a bit in a corner, I am not going to cancel my trip

but would like to have some sane plan of action.

Marcos.

Hi Marcos,

I don't envy your situation at all. Lets hope the test comes back showing you

have immunity which will give you peace of mind and confidence.

On the other hand, if you find that you have no immunity, I would ask your

doctor if you can take one of the antiviral drugs as a precaution since you know

you'll be in contact with several people who will presumably still be

contagious.

I assume your brother will be next in line to catch the beast since he doesn't

have immunity. If he does catch it, I'm not sure he'll be in any shape to

partake in any vacationing activities as adults with chicken pox fair much worse

than kids. He himself might want to ask his doctor about the antiviral drugs

now.

My experience has been that the disease incubates for 3 weeks as that was how

long my second daughter took to catch it from my first daughter.

As for the vaccine. I'm not sure if it's a live vaccine but if it is, that

would explain why one of your doctors doesn't want you to take it. We're not

supposed to have live vaccines of any kind. Then again, even if it's not a live

vaccine, you may not develop any antibodies with it which would render the

vaccine useless anyway. This has been seen with Hep B vaccines in people taking

Gleevec (they required additional boosters because antibody development was

impaired).

I really hope you have the immunity already, that would solve all your problems!

Hi Marcos,

Yes it's Acyclovir. Apparently it's the only drug right now that's FDA approved

for the treatment of chicken pox.

Hi Marcos - well I came down with the pox last week - had the week off while

the spots were coming out and had a " cold " - headache, runny nose, slight

fever, but otherwise well! So well we still went away for a few days at the

end of the week.

My haem/t said if they continued breaking out he would think about acyclovir

.....but I can't take it with Tasigna. Anyway, all is well and don't have to

worry. Of interest, my 12 month old g'son got them quite badly and after 3

weeks is spotting still, my daughter and SIL, my friend who is staying, the

2 girls (nearly 3 and 6) and my husband!!!!

All the adults have had CP as children, so as they say " go figure " . At least

it wasn't shingles.

Good news, the varicella test came back positive, so I shouldn't have

to fear my adorable little niece that looks like a pizza right now the

poor thing. It would have been heartbreaking to be avoiding her the

whole time. And we ll have a prescription of acyclovir in case any of

us catch it.

My new onc at kaiser was really on the ball on that one, she answered

my email in about 10mn and ordered the test stat so all went really

fast. I was a bit embarrassed to have a problem in her first month

when I didn't see the previous onc for about 2 years, but now I feel

like I can count on her. That's good news too.

Thanks everyone for sharing your chickenpox stories.
