Guest guest
Are we supposed to ask our Onc first before we go to the dentist? I also have a cavity and was going to make an appt. on Monday to get filled. Guest guest
It would be advisable - for antibiotics if you having teeth filled or tooth out Plus I suppose if you have a bleeding problem after treatment Share care with your dentist and specialist - cannot hurt to ask the question of your specialist advise Sue Note: I had a problem with bleeding from gums after I had my teeth cleaned at the dentist a couple of visits ago - bleeding would not stop - had to be watched at the General Practicioners - stopped after about 20 minutes Needed antibiotics to be on the safe side Sue

Guest guest
Dear Cmler2, Just on the human side, dry mouth is one of the causes of tooth decay, for most cancer patients, unless you consuming lots of white sugar foods, and high glycemic foods in ones diet. I have found in the past that Coenzyme Q-10, 150 mgs. works really well in preventing against periodontal surgery, and will protect one teeth and gum. Scheduling more frequent teeth cleanings like once every 3 months, is a good ideal with a Periodontal Hygienist and having them scrape with dental tools without a syringe, is a better ideal too! If one has dental insurances you can call the folks on the rear of your medical insurance card, and they can help you find the specialist your looking for, in dentistry. Then when you get that person full name you can also look them up in Internet to see if there was ever any problems with the dentist. I usually asked several friends about their General D.D.S., and I usually asked for Dentist who graduated years ago, through 2 very reputable dental schools which was once in the area I currently live in. I asked things about caps, dental work, appliances, teeth cleaning, and how the doctors manners are. I specifically, asked about the technical aspect of a dentist, and his staff. If I don't hear the word " excellent, " then I have to research and find one. You must asked more questions for the right dentist, and most of them who know you are a cancer patient, seem to take more precautions, I like the ones who are in their late 40's or early 60's, they seem to know more about the dentistry, and do not overcharge you for the appliances, such as crowns, and etc.... Good Luck, and asked many questions! Guest guest
Thanks Dory, I forgot to mention in my reply to Sue that I understand I cannot let this teeth thing go, it is just I have never had dental problems in my life and take care of my teeth, it has just been a shock to see the damage that has been done so fast, lack of cash, and also it has really hit me in the self esteem. Granted, I have decided not to date anymore and raise my son, but I have always taken pride in my appearance. Now even if I decided to try and date again, not only do I have the whole CML thing, but depending on what exactly is wrong with my teeth, I may end up being 42 with no teeth. So cut me a little slack, I am far from foolhearty, I am just having trouble dealing with this on top of everything else. I know I cannot keep putting this off, but without dental insurance I have to be able to pay for the treatment(whatever that is going to be), and find a dentist that is not going to freak when they hear Leukemia. My onco said to have the prospective dentist call them if they have questions, but I called two already and as soon as the lady on the phone heard Leukemia they basically hung up telling me to see my onco. I did not even get the chance to tell them they can call them. I guess the bottom line is this....Since I was diagnoised my life has went to hell, and this thing with my teeth is just another thing that has went wrong. I am not trying to have a pity party, it is just I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. Now it looks like I may lose my teeth, after always taking care of them all my life. Since April of 04 I have nearly lost any sort of confidence I had as I lose more and more. Started with my job(along with " killer " insurance),my wife,my house, my son for a year, and now my teeth. I understand it has to be done and I will get them looked at, I am sorry if I came off like I thought it would go away, or I was buring my head in the sand. I am just fed up with getting little bits of me and what was my life disappearing. I will stop whining now, I just wanted to explain I am not a fool. Guest guest
Terry-  It is a rough adventure we are on with new things cropping up daily. Remember you are not alone and we welcome your thoughts- whether whining or laughing. Everyone's pain is unique but many of our losses are similar. That is why we are here- together.  Hang in there ,my brother.  Chi From: Terry Dailey <terrydailey@...> Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Terry and Teeth Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 5:21 PM Thanks Dory, I forgot to mention in my reply to Sue that I understand I cannot let this teeth thing go, it is just I have never had dental problems in my life and take care of my teeth, it has just been a shock to see the damage that has been done so fast, lack of cash, and also it has really hit me in the self esteem. Guest guest
Thanks Chi, I know all of us here have suffered some sort of loss, except for those lucky enough to not have many side effects. Every time I go to my onco's office I see so many people worse off than myself, so things could be worse. I just have been having a hard time lately. You would think I would be used to things by now..lol. Anyhow, thanks Chi, and everyone else.
