Hi everyone. I don't post too often, was diagnosed about a year ago and have

been doing very well on Gleevec until about 5 weeks ago when my liver enzymes

became slightly/moderatly elevated. Reduced dose to 300 mg and began monitoring

weekly and every week enzymes went up. After having been off Gleevec completely

for 1 week enzymes still rising (ALT 350, AST 280). Because enzymes still rose

while off Gleevec, my onc thinks it might not be Gleevec related. Has anyone

else had an experience like this where enzymes still rose while off drug? Maybe

it takes longer than a week before they stop rising? I'm going to a liver

specialist next week and will probably have a biopsy. Staying off Gleevec for

now. Thanks for your help!

Hi Kathy,

If you look through the archives, you'll see that there have been many

discussions about this subject. It can take weeks, even months sometimes, for

the liver enzymes to get back to normal. This has me wondering how much your

doctor knows about Gleevec related hepatoxicity. The elevated enzymes are most

likely related to the Gleevec but you should still get a hepatitis test to rule

that out.

Thanks Tracey- It turns out that I have tested positive for Epstein

Barr/Mononucleosis (at 48 yrs old!). So my Doc thinks that is what's causing

the elevating liver enzymes and I'm starting back on Gleevec today after 2 weeks

off. Hopefully, this is all it is..I have been extra tired with on and off sore

throat. Also, by doc admits he doesn't know much about CML or Gleevec. But he

does contact other doctors about me, last week he spoke to Dr. Kantarjian from

MC , who told him I might need to switch to Sprycel.
