Subject: [ ] High Parathyroid Hormone

Hi: I had discussed this awhile back. I was diagnosed with a high PTH after

seeing a new doctor. He saw that my Calcium was a high normal, and my

phosphorus was low. I told him that my numbers are running like that since

1988, and no other doctor ever ran a PTH on me.

Then I was sent for a Parathyroid Scan, to evaluate me for a adenoma on the

thyroid. Nothing showed up, and my PTH has been fluctuating. I was sent for

another scan, and that came back normal also. They sent me for a Bone

Density Scan, and that came back normal.

They mentioned doing exploratory surgery on me in case I have a benign tumor

( which is usually the case on Parathyroid). My Oncologist does not want me

to have it. I went to see a specialist, and he said if I have had these

abnormal numbers for over 20 years then why should we put me through

something so intense. ITs a very delicate operation because your Parathyroid

is right near your Voice Box. I went back to the doctor who wanted me to get

this exploratory surgery, and told him he is the only one suggesting this.

He said, then lets leave it alone and just keep checking your numbers.

Last couple of PTH's were on high side, but not as high as they were. I also

take nothing for it.

If anyone suggests any type of surgery, do not rush into it is all I can

say.

Sizzie,

You seem to be informed on the PTH thing.

I have a few questions.

So what if we do have this benign tumor --- can it cause damage???

Are there any symptoms of having this?

I agree with your doctors about not doing surgery. I would not do it either.

Gee you would think in this modern world they could it with a lazer???

I am waiting to hear from my Dr. about what they want to do.-

It dropped to a normal range while I was on a high dose of Vitamin D.

I really do not want to take ol like does. I read the side

affects. I just don't quite understand what the problem is with a high

PTH???

Maybe it is just something Tasigna is causing. A high reading????

Hi Sharon: You probably forgot that we discussed this about a year ago.

You had mentioned a high PTH,and then I responded. I would not worry

about a 95. Mine has gone up to 164, and it bounces all over the place.

All the doctors that I saw all agreed that I should just watch the

numbers. They did put me on a Vit D, but I think the dose was too high, and it

made me sick. Next time you get your PTH blood work, and if it has gone up,then

they might want to do the scan to see if that

is normal. You are probably like me, I never had a PTH done. None of my

doctors from years back were concerned with the High Normal Calcium or the Low

Phosphorus. I have no symptoms whether its up or down. I think my last one was

114. I will have to check my blood work. I do not get another test until Sept.

Like I said they are not concerned at this point, and based on the fact

that my calcium and phosphorus have been in the same range for 20 years, I am

not looking for trouble. The other thing is how has your

Calcium numbers been throughout various blood tests. I run around 9.5, and

phosphorus 2.1 or .2

What does your doctor say about it?

Hi Sharon: I have gone on that website many times, and I was so scared

after reading all that stuff. I was ready to make an appointment with that Dr.

Norman in Florida because he specializes in that surgery.

Now a few more years have gone by, and there is still no change in anything

for me. I am just going to keep getting my PTH Test every 6 months and watch

those numbers.

If you have had calcium numbers like that for awhile, and they have not

gone up over 10 I would just see what your doctor thinks, or see a

Endocrinolgist if you have not seen one yet.

I just asked Bob what made him get his PTH test. Its not something that is

routinely done. I have not heard back from him yet.

Believe me Sharon, I was like a basket case after reading all the symptoms

and surgery info on that website.

It is not from our medication, because I was not on treatment back

in 1988. You can just e-mail me anytime at my regular e-mail. Try not to get

concerned. I think we have enough on our plate already.
