Guest guest
Hi Amy. I have had quite a few iron infusions while I was on Gleevec. I also needed blood transfusions and believe me, iron is a very easy procedure. It took about an hour with no complications. Good luck. ________________________________ From: Amy <aimesc31@...> Sent: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 5:11:09 PM Subject: [ ] Iron Infusion.....anyone???? I will start having iron infusions next week. Apparently I am having trouble absorbing iron.....gastric bypass related. My H/H is consistently 10/30 and Iron at 7......so infusions are a must. I haven't ever had one and do not know anyone who has. Just wondering if there are any problems associated with them. They will only infuse in a cancer center here.....so makes me wonder. cml still hanging in there at PCRU....last PCR 0.06 after being up to a 2 while pregnant. Last WBCs 5.4. So at least I absorb the gleevec. BABY FRONT.... Brent is now 18 months old, and if I do say so my self one heck of a charmer. He is such a BOY. In a family of all GIRLS he is quite a treat. Guest guest
Amy, I had 5 bags of iron infused last year. I think the name was Venofor but I am not positive on that. I do know there are a couple different types and the one I had was a piece of cake. I went Mon. Wed. Fri and then Mon. Wed of the next week. The first one took a couple of hours as they run that one slow to make sure you don't have any bad reaction to it. All of the others only took about an hour. I had low iron saturation levels at the time and that is why I need the infusions. I had absolutely no problems with the infusions. I would recommend they leave the line in your vein that way you don't have to get stuck each time if you are having more then one that is. I was told that 5 infusions is a common number to have. Mine where all done at the local hospital even though we do have a small cancer center attached to the hospital. I hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to give me a shout. Guest guest
Amy, I am SharonS.I am A banded RNYer.I also have Iron deficiencies and need Iron infusions a few times a year.I had a slight reaction to the iron they used the first round of infusions that I had.My Dr order infusions every 3 days for 5 weeks and by the fourth infusion I started to develope lumps under my skin, tenderness and hot arms.I dicontinur=ed them.My 2nd round the Dr ordered infusions every 3 days for 5 weeks also, switched to a different iron and I had NO issues at all.I didn't even need to use the Benedryl that is often given to help reduce side effects. When Benedryl was given I needed to have a driver without it I didn't need a driver. Nice to know I am not the only RNYer with CML out here.Do you take Iron supplements Like Tender Iron to help keep the levels up? You should do fine. Good luck SharonS In , " Amy " <aimesc31@...> wrote: > > I will start having iron infusions next week. Apparently I am having trouble absorbing iron.....gastric bypass related. My H/H is consistently 10/30 and Iron at 7......so infusions are a must. ___________________ Hi Amy, I just had 2 iron infusions because my ferritin was low and Medicare drug coverage would not pay for Procrit unless it was at least 100 (it was about 37). I have not had any red meat for over 10 years. This cancer center had a definite routine, but it went great for me. First they gave me a tylenol....then infused some Tagamet for the stomach, then a small dose of Benedryl (I did not need a driver the 2nd infusion, I knew my head was clear enough), and then a bit of Decadron. Then it took just over an hour for the iron (Ferrlecit 125mg). I had 2 infusion and then was leaving that area, so did not have the scheduled third one. When re-tested my ferritin was 157...so very successful for me. The infusions were one week apart. It is always fun to hear you talk about Brett. Don't go spoiling that only boy in the family! C.
