Guest guest
Hi I am sorry that I can't offer first-hand advice as we were lucky enough not to have Emma come down with a fever during a flight. However I would imagine that it is very important to keep your son well hydrated, as both the fever and the cabin pressure with dehydrate him. So maybe take some rehydration mixture if you think he will drink it, or his favourite juices. The only other thing that used to work well with our daughter is distraction. So with a bit of luck he might be excited at seeing all the planes etc and it might help make him feel better. You mentioned he can't have prednisone, is he allergic to it as this might eliminate the fever before you even get on the plane? Good luck and let us know how it goes! Guest guest
Hi , My son is 3 and we travel home a lot. It is a 3 hour flight usually, so not as long as yours. We have had to fly two times while he was spiking fevers. I just made sure I timed it so that he got motrin 30 minutes prior to actually getting on the plane to try and make him more comfortable. I also gave him benadryl with my pediatricians ok to try and help him sleep during the flight (be careful though, benadryl can make some kids more wired than sleepy! always check with md first). It wasn't one of our more pleasnt flights- but I don't think the flight itself made his fevers any worse than they usually are. Good luck! Guest guest
Great advice about hydration. I too cannot offer advice since we use steroids when necessary. Good luck to you and hope you are able to enjoy your vacation.
Guest guest
Hi , Sorry to hear about your son's fever - seems like kids always get sick right before you go on vacation. The last time we traveled on an airplane Lily was fevering. In fact she started coming down with it on the drive to the airport. I gave her Motrin about 30 min prior and just kept her comfy. Our flight was only 3 hours, so I gave her Tylenol upon our arrival. I like the idea of Benadryl, but as Laurie stated it's best to talk to your Pediatrician to find out about it, also check to see just how close you can dosage the Motrin and Tylenol. I guess the good news is that you won't have to worry about him coming down with a fever in the middle of your trip. Good luck. Guest guest
I'm sorry to say, I took a 16 hour flight with my son fevering. He was 22mos old. It was a very traumatic experience for everyone involved. He cried just about the entire flight and did not sleep a wink. I must add that when we landed we saw a doctor and he was also diagnosed w/tonsillitis and double ear infections. My poor little guy was in so much pain. We saw an amazing doctor in S Africa when on our trip who was very familiar with PFS and he was the one who strongly encouraged surgery and for that I am eternally grateful. Just our luck our vacation was 3 weeks and my son fevered 2 additional times including the flight back home which was even longer at 18 hours. The doctor gave us tylenol w/codine for the trip home and this tim slept on and off maybe 2-3hrs. Sorry, I don't have advice. At least 7hrs is not too bad. After my experience I would never take a flight much longer than 7hrs with a fevering child. Hopefully we can go overseas next year, I just pray stays healthy. So far 3 months fever free after surgery! Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone with SprintSpeed
