Guest guest
Hi Don, why do you feel that in some respects it is harder on the guys. Guest guest
A couple of reasons...In my case, I was the primary bread winner. I went from having a nearly 6 figure income, to zero, then two years later (after bankruptcy) a very meager social security. My wife continues to work and it's been hard for both of us to change roles. But, from the beginning of time, men were the providers, women the caregivers. So, it's very hard on the ego. Men, through sports, are taught to ignore pain. To keep on going. With this disease you have to get over that in a big hurry or you'll kill yourself. Rather than ignoring pain and fatigue, we have to acknowledge it, and give in to it. We have to learn to rest. For many men, we are taught to be competetive. That drive can now kill us. To stay home and rest is very counter to what we've been taught all of our lives. Boys are more physically active. With this disease, we can't be. All of those physical things that I loved to do, I can't anymore. Just imagine the looks I get when Terri carries the heavy things from a store, and I'm walking next to her. I'm supposed to be the strong one. But, I'm not. Society has a lot of expectations for men. Most of them I can no longer meet. Does that explain it? Now, don't get me wrong...women have the same physical problems...but I think societies expectations are a bit different. Am I way off base?? Guest guest
I can understand a little how hard it can be for a man to loose his ability to be what society expects...bread winner, the strong one, etc. I am a woman but I have three kids that I have raised by myself and they still think I should be able to do everything that I have ever done. The don't understand that even going shopping can be exhausting. I still work but have had to change to a job that is more paperwork and less physical. I find that I am slower at the paperwork than I used to be also, partly because I have to double check myself to catch errors. Anyway just wanted to comment... Jo from N. Calif. Guest guest
Don - I am not saying this to be insulting but stool color is important to some people with different kinds of liver diseases. Espically when they are uncertain about it. I was one of the people that brought this up I was upset and concerned and Geri and others answered questions to put my mind at ease. Each and every one of us do this everyday. Why should it be such an unorthodox subject? It's Life and liver disease.

My husband worked construction and up in northern Wisconsin it is now a full time job. He got the job he has now just before I got sick. We had plans to get a lot of things done in our house, etc., and then I got sick and now don't work. I know that SS is not way to make yourself rich. Guest guest
, Actually if this hasn't been addressed yet, determines what is happening to the liver. After all Liver problems are gross and all work together with the sewer department. It is very important to the docs. My doctors always ask me how the poop department is. Guest guest
Don - Does taking Paxil help? my doctor has wanted me to start on it for a long time aand I kept telling him I don't want to add anymore drugs to my liver. But I do need something for depression and mood swings and that I don't ever want to get out of bed feeling. How many mg. do you take? Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi , My liver doc (Dr Czaja) thought that Paxil was fine for the liver. I started with 20mg and then moved up to 30mg. It took about 2 weeks to really start working. It was subtle to me, but noticeable to others. I was able to get things done that I had been putting off for months. Things didn't seem so overwhelming any more. My family noticed that my anger was gone. Things that used to send me into a rage, were no longer a big deal. I could handle them in stride. Guest guest
Hi Don Was wondering if you got my e-mail that I sent to you on the 22nd of Sept... How are you doing on you pred....Are you going to the every other day dose.... Don't know if you have seen my posts about Ty and his spleen troubles....He is also on prednisone now also...It has been a couple of years since he was on it...hopefully he too will soon be on the weaning side of this med... Hope you and Teri are both doing well.... Luanne Ty's mom
Guest guest
Hi Luanne, I have an appointment with a doc at my new clinic this Friday. I want to check my LFT's and adrenal levels before I taper any further. My understanding of the every other day method is that it works well to keep the adrenals from stopping entirely. But, you need to have started with that method. I did not, and have been as high as 100mg/day. So, it's unquestionable that my adrenals had shut down. From what other's have said, I'm guessing the pain is just the "normal" arthritis that is fairly common after long term use of pred. My docs at Mayo said that prednisone is unquestionably a life saver, but there needs to be a plan on when to wean. Unfortunately, my original docs got me to a dose that arrested my symptoms but then left me there. That's when the diabetes, hypertension, and glaucoma set in. It sounds like Ty's docs are doing the right thing. We're still waiting for Terri's results. It's pretty certain that she has an ovarian cyst. It's not clear whether surgery is needed. We are also waiting for a reschedule of her colonoscopy. I hate the uncertainty. I can deal with anything, if I know what it is...but the uncertainty is tough!! Give Ty a hug and let him know that we are thinking about him. Guest guest
Hi... Your post on the immune system was very interesting....I was always under the impression that the immune system saw these organs as alien and so attacked....but if I am correct you are saying that these organs for some reason are not identify themselves properly or at all and so is being attacked....So that means that people here with more than one auto-immune disease have organs that are not saying... " hey I am so and so and I belong to you.... " so they get attacked.... The doctors where Ty goes ..Childrens Hosp. in Philly....are pretty upset that another organ of his is now being attacked....His spleen....I know that everyone seems to have some spleen trouble and low playlets....but they are saying that Ty's spleen is more than a reaction of having either liver disease or Crohns...even those these do cause some spleen trouble what he has been having in the past 2 yrs with the spleen is more than that....So they feel the spleen itself is being attacked..... They are in the process of getting him seen somewhere else....Before IT (the immune system) attacks somewhere else.....Right now we are seeing where they want to send him and if he will be excepted.....They are looking into the NIH in DC...So far it is a go but we are waiting for one more division to except him....we should know by next week....In one aspect I am happy about this...but then again it worries me that he needs to go somewhere else....that he is such a puzzle that we need more players to put it together.....I also hope that I will be able to bring in some new info for the group.....We will see... Where did you find this info and thanks for sharing.... Luanne Ty's mom
Guest guest
Hi LuAnne, It was an abstract that someone on a lupus list posted about a year ago. It had just been published. I think they found it on medline. One of the people on that list is a research endocrinologist. It does make some sense. They were trying to figure out how the immune system knew what was friend and what was foe. If I remember right, they discovered a protein that seems to be the identifier. Cells without the identifying protein were attacked, those with were not. Since it was fairly basic research, I doubt that any practical treatment options have come of it yet, but it was an interesting discovery.
