Guest guest
Hello Sandi! I must say that before I had joint swelling I was developing at an above average rate. The doctors had told my parents I may be over 6ft tall. I am 5'6. I didn't reach 6 ft and the doctors seem to thinks thats due to my JRA but who knows. My wrists are a little smaller than the rest of my body but not really noticable unless pointed out. As a child, I was noticably stiff. I was so used to the pain it was hard for me to notice that I walked with a limp during those not so good flare-ups. Although my mother was very in tune to my disease, it was hard for her to take notice of my stiffness and limping because she got so used to it. Sometimes parents would tell her that I looked like I was an old lady with the way that I walked. It wasn't that my mom didn't know I was in pain, she just didn't see my JRA as my friends parents did. I eventually wound up at A.I. Dupont where they treated my JRA very aggressively. I was in and out of the hospital and therapy. I began to be able to lead a normal childhood. I played softball for a couple of years. Of course I couldn't play all of the games or go to all of the practices due to pain and stiffness but it made me feel good to be a memeber of the team. Later I found that it was too taxing on my body. Because the arthritis had damaged my spine I could not do a summersault, headstand, cartwheel, gymnastics or any contact sport. It really upset me not to do those things at first even though I knew why. My mom got me into dancing and singing. She had to really educate anyone that dealt with me on a physical level so my dance teacher knew all about my JRA and the limitations that I had. I ended up dancing for 6 years. I am still singing. In middle school and high school I was in all of the talent shows singing. I even got special permission to leave the hospital to sing in a middle school talent show. Going into college, I sang in weddings, was in the college musicals, and I was a resident assistant that counciled other students . I wasn't active in any sports throughout school but I was active in so much more like student council, peer helping, choir, and band. To see me now, you could never geuss that I have a debilitating disease. I credit alot of my strength to my mother who cried with me when I was in pain and advocated for me to lead an active childhood. Talking to my mom today, she has mentioned how happy she was with the aggressive medical treatment. She said that at first, she was very scared and worried that they were using so many drugs. I had nightmares where I would sleepwalk and I had extreme emotions with the prendisone not to mention the weightgain among other things. Yet, she had to educate herself while also trusting that the aggressiveness was for the sole reason that my body and bones were growing and the doctors wanted them to grow the right way. Well, I am certainly writing quite a bit to you! I hope this answers your question. I would be glad to chat with you or Ashli. I always thought it was so neat meeting someone else with JRA. Most of the older girls that I met as a child were not in good shape and hadn't been treated as aggressively as a child and therefore suffered with permanent disability. I can understand where you and your daughter are right now and I know it is so tough. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Take Care! Guest guest
Wenoka ---- I couldn't have said it any better. Life will always be filled with == what if's, why me's, if only's. It doesn't change life and we can't change every aspect of it. We can learn from it, deal with it and become stronger. We can love our children no matter what and show them how wonderful life can be. We are all strong people and we need to find that within ourselves. We have no control over what portions of our genetic makeup our children may obtain and there is no way for all of us to know our exact makeup before we make each step. My grandmother always said, " If you wait till you have enough money for a baby, you will never have one. " Same rule here. If you wait till everything is in perfect shape with your genetics, etc., you may never have a child. No one intentionally passes something on to their children, unless they are doing obvious drugs or something during their pregnancy, but sometimes these things happen. I want to thank all of you for the support over the past week it has been a rough month and I hope it will slow down soon. We are just back in from the hospital again and will be going again tomorrow. We are exhausted but we have a sleep deprivation EEG tomorrow so it will be little sleep tonight for us. Have a nice afternoon everyone. Hugs, , & Kaylin --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). How have things been going on your end,Have you signed a contract yet,we are still waiting to hear from the Attorney working on the Prozac case.I think it's time to contact him again,We had a depostion last friday with our attorney here in Omaha and the Pyschairtist and his Attorney,It went very well.Even our attorney said what a twitt this Dr. is,The Dr. (Dr. Rich) claimed he wasn't aware Dad was his patient! Can you belive that.He was the specialist that was called in when Dads primary Doctor hospitalized him for dehydration,He was the Dr. that signed Dad out of the hospital,Dad was to meet with this Dr. the same day that he was released which mom and dad went to his office but instead of being seen by this Dr. they were seen by a therapist,He calmed that it was up to dad to request a meeting with him and he said Dad never called him our he would have seen him personally,Dad was in no shape to do this and it was the Drs. release orders that the dr. wrote in his own hand writting to see him in his office that day.Any way he said he knew dad was in a safe place at the hospital yet he signed him out he said the primary dr. wanted to keep dad there 2 or 3 more days.He also said that the therapist came into his office on the 17th the day dad was there for the last time 3 days before he committed suicide and talked to the dr. about upping dads dose that the family was concerned that it was the medicine that was making dad so sick and that the family request he be hospitalized, but he said he told the therapist to assure the family that he was well with in the theraputic limits of prozac and that the hospital would do no more than what was already being done.Yet Dad wasn't his patient. Can you belive this!!! The last question asked by our Attorney was have you ever been sued before after a long pause he said yes,Dawn this man had one lawsuit in 1985 that was settled out of court and since Dads death ther have been 2 more a total of 4 lawsuites.Mom said she remembered that at least one other was a suicide death but couldn't remember what the third suit was she was writting down info on the second death after dad and missed it but we are getting a copy of the deposition so we'll know more about that then. Mom feels even if this dosen't get to court she got to see the S.O.B.squirm. I personally think they will come back with a settlement offer but I told mom not to settle that this man needs to lose his licience.I belive we will force it to court he had no defence for his actions at all,He was also asked if this death could have been prevented and his answer was possibly.Possibly my ASS,If they would have put Dad back in the hospital and got him off the Prozac he would be with us today. Guest guest
Sandi: Thanks for the thought. I would have thought she might have allergies, since she started with the dark circles (allergic shiners) a year or so ago. But the allergy testing they did this winter included " everything " in this area, indoor and out. She never has the symptoms I do, congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, but I understand you don't necessarily have to have those symptoms. She's extra crabby though, even for a 3 yr old. DH has a work dinner tonight and I'm dragging already, not to mention the " solo " night ahead. Sigh. Whatever happened to that 2nd trimester " high " ?? Guest guest
Sandi: Well, Omnicef is our " sure thing " for sinus infections, so it's what we've always gone to. So far, the only abx that has totally failed for was amoxicillin, and that NEVER worked. Cefzil seemed to peter out with the third-to-last sinus infection and she ended up on Omnicef to clear it. Last two were Omnicef alone, but last one required two courses, which doesn't surprise me. Thanks for the heads-up... I really should keep that in mind about the abx maybe not working. She doesn't use any nose spray, we've always done fine just treating with abx. Something to consider though, is it a steroid to help the abx work? Thanks-- (mom to , age 3. Guest guest
Poor Kody. I think we all have our limits--and procedures we just plain hate. For Kody, it's a nasal scope. I will definitely be praying. And I firmly believe that bribery has it's place! By the way, it makes so much sense when you compare it to your fear of spiders. I have the same reaction to snakes. I doubt that's going away anytime soon. Sorry, I was just trying to help:) Take Care, Sandi
Guest guest
Sandi: Thanks for thinking of us! I'm sorry you're sick. I know when I had my bad sinus infections last year (with our mold) I was crabby and my energy was low and I felt rotten. I can't believe so many of our kids have to go through that! I meant to mention that I have decided to try more Tylenol or Advil with for her next sinus infection, as I finally gave her some late in this infection (which seems to be gone now, yeah!) and it seemed to improve her " behavior " . I hope you're not flying anywhere soon -- I flew with my sinus infection and I swear I thought my cheeks would rupture! The pain was awful. It ended up going to my ears as well, I was thinking that was from the pressure of flying. Okay, I'm just babbling now! Feel better! (mom to , age 3. Guest guest
Hi Sandi: Thanks for your thoughts! Once they realized Amoxicillin did absolutely nothing for (1999), they started giving her Ceftin for everything, then switched to Cefzil last year or two just because kids seem to like it better and it's not so sticky that you waste it. Last summer with all the mold remediation/hotel illnesses, Cefzil wasn't cutting it, so they would end up on Omnicef after the Cefzil. The last couple of times we've just started right away on the Omnicef. But she's needed more and more courses. Like the first time, only one course of Omnicef. Then two courses. Then 25 days this last time. Only other abx was she had Augmentin plus Amoxicillin (that new combo) for her bacterial pneumonia last year. Did the trick nicely. I don't even know what else they'd give her. Keep in mind some of those infections of last summer also got a boost at the beginning of Rocephin shots for a couple of days due to high white counts or high fevers. But then again, Rocephin is Ceftriaxone, another cephalosporin. Hmmmm. I'm just glad the Augmentin combo worked so well for the pneumo, she'd never had it before and it was a little scary to me to deal with something new. So used to the other stuff, you know?! It was SO easy to hook up. Just popped it out of the box and plugged it into a little port on the back of the computer. I think they run like $50 though, and you'd want one each end. Guest guest
Hi Sandi: Heated M & Ms are my contribution to the world of cuisine. As a teenager I was eating some in front of the TV once, they were in a paper towel in my hand. They got very warm and I realized the inside chocolate was all melted but the outside candy coating was still solid. They were 10x better this way! Once you've had melted M & Ms you'll never go back to " raw " ! In my old microwave you heat them in a coffee cup for about 45 seconds. But start with 20 or 30 and work up in 10 second increments, because if you overcook them they are charred inside and gross. You want some of the shells to just start to show cracks. Off topic but DELICIOUS!!!!!!! Bon Appetit! (mom to , age 3-1/2. Guest guest
Sandi: That was my fear, that all of a sudden was allergic to the drug that had always worked so well for her (Cefzil). But she has had Cefzil many times since then with no ill effects, so apparently she's not allergic. Though for the last three sinus infections it hasn't kicked enough and we ended up on Omnicef in ever-increasing amounts anyway. Since we were living in hotels at the time of the hives, I assumed it was some industrial laundry detergent or something similar, as it happened during a nap in our hotel bed. I don't have a sinus infection this time, just ear, but my behavior isn't so great regardless! Last year with the mold, I had sinus AND ear, and I was a beast I admit!!! 'Course I had other stresses at the same time because of the situation we were in. I'm more pitiful than beastly with this ear thing, not crabby but tearful and weak and woozy. The augmentin is supposed to kick in later today. I hope I hope! Been holding a warm washcloth to my ear periodically and wishing for knowledge of how to do some warm drops. Any ideas? My wonderful MIL took most of yesterday and again today. Bless that woman, what a tremendous help she is. (mom to , age 3-1/2. My wonderful MIL took most of yesterday and again today. Bless that woman, what a tremendous help she is. (mom to , age 3-1/2. Currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs)
Guest guest
HI , Sandi here, Bri is doing great--he's between infections, that's always a happy time at our house. Thanks for asking, my flare seems to be improving a bit--still on a high dose of Prednisone. I look like a chipmunk!! Oh well, I see my new Rheumy tomorrow to see what he has planned. Hopefully, he will have one, if not I DO!! How are things at your house? Sandi
