Aloha sharon Sent via BlackBerry by AT & T [ ] side effect/taste Has anyone experienced losing their sense of taste sense of taste since starting gleevec. My dad cannot taste anything and eats only to survive. He also has no appetite. I have not seen this from anyone as a side effect. It started right after he started the gleevec and got a lot worse after the heart problems which came after the gleevec. By the way, you guys are awsome and I am going to plug my dad in so he can write himself.

I had decreased appetite and most foods were not that appealing, but I could still taste them. Sometimes I just went back to my old childhood favorites (comfort foods) even though they were not as healthy. I have not lost weight because of this! I think I gradually enjoyed my food more. I don't think this is uncommon. Your dad will find some good friends on the list. C.
Guest guest
Hi Lori & , I too had the same problem as I was on Gleevec 400mgs. some 2 years ago. I had on-going problems of swelling, that lead water into my inner ears. I lost the sense of taste to food, and only ate one meal a day just to take the drug. I also slept few hours because I has insomnia. Although, I would make excellent meals for my family and they would always tell me so, I would never eat the meat I made for my family, because meat gave me the metallic taste, and just as someone else said it is like the first trimester of pregnancy, when your taste buds and your senses tell you something has an awful odor, and one doesn't care for ANY foods. I soon sought the attention of an Acupuncturist, and complain high-ole about everything that made my life miserable while on Gleevec 400mgs. The 1st 2 appointments I was more relaxed, and went home and finally slept through the night. The 3rd time food became more palatable, then they brought more energy to my body, and I got motivated to attended a health club. As I started on treadmills for 45 minutes of walking, I soon became bored! I started running on treadmills, and did the health club for the duration of 1 year. In that one year, I started to feel hungry, and started to eat more. Although I wouldn't say I lost any weight, I just moved around and got the inflammation in my lower legs, to not have such high edema, because I refused to take any other medication to reduce the extra water, then suffer from the side-effects. All medications target to damage our liver, in Acupuncture they strengthen the liver, kidneys and spleen to have your inner Chi ( center of your core, ones stomach with better energy) to eat more, keep energy moving, and to exercise as one takes the Gleevec. When I didn't attended a heath club, I would also be very cold on Gleevec 400mgs. I wore polar-fleece even in the summer, as the ceiling fans, and air-condition businesses, home and everywhere else that has a breeze would make me cold. After, Acupuncture I no longer looked like a winter bunny, with winter clothes on in the heat of the summer. There is no pain that comes with needles, however, if your dad doesn't want to do this method, there are Acupuncturist who can work on the Meridians to bring their energy to ones body, without needles. Meridians are pressure points in various places on our bodies. Each meridian represents either the liver, spleen, and kidneys, when the needles are placed in and one is breathing deeply, to relax the mind and body, one will find their selves more relaxed, and in peace as the must take the Gleevec. Eating right to make our bodies stronger while on Gleevec, is the only way to survive. Without the proper nutrition, ones health becomes worst. Without exercise one does not survive. Can your dad make short walks? If he didn't want to go outdoors, there are things like going up and down stairs, several times per day, or just sitting and deep breathing helps exercise your lungs to keep them clear. Does your dad have a Senior Health, or Park District he can attend? If he keeps his mind off of Gleevec, and returns to a productive life, of going and doing things, he won't have time to think of his cancer. Does your dad have any hobbies, or would he like to invent one? I raised a family of 3 and I am up everyday at 6:AM, and in bed if I am lucky, but 12:PM. On weekends I get to sleep late on Sunday's if I attend my church with the kids on Saturday. Sleeping late is not my ideal of catching up with my Z's however, everyday, I am driving or making fresh meals for my children, and even dog. All school lunches are fresh hot foods which requires much energy, in providing them with healthy good homemade meals. Then there is the kitchen, and the cleaning. I invented a Chinese Garden in my backyard. Every years I get asked by the Infant Welfare Group, to show my garden in the Garden walk for fund-raising. I love sculpture, and bring an assortment of rusted iron-works into beautifying and enjoy the gardening of flowers, and organic vegetables. On days that is sunny, I find the 2 hours to be productive, and on days of rain, I am still managing more plants to be divided, and replanted, and or given away to new neighbors or for someone to turn an ugly duckling garden with fresh ideas. Hope your dad finds something that inspires, is inviting, and has strong interest in moving! Blessings to you, for being there for him!
