Guest guest
" Plasma vitamin B12 concentrations and the risk of colorectal cancer: a nested case-referent study, " Dahlin AM, Van Guelpen B, et al, Int J Cancer, 2008; 122(9): 2057-61. Summary: In a nested, case-referent study involving 226 subjects with colorectal cancer and double matched referents, plasma concentrations of vitamin B12 were found to be inversely associated with risk of rectal cancer. The univariate odds ratio of rectal cancer was 0.34 for subjects in the highest versus the lowest quintile of vitamin B12 plasma concentration. On the other hand the corresponding univariate odds ratio for colon cancer was 1.25, about which the authors state, " The observed over-risk was attributable to left-sided colon cancer. " These results suggest that increasing levels of vitamin B12 may reduce the risk of rectal cancer.
