Guest guest
Hi, I went off Methotrexate while trying to get pregnant and while pregnant and nursing twice. I went on prednisone to manage the inflamation. The doses varried for the prednisone. I think I started at about 5 and quickly went to 10 while trying to conceive. I was able to lower it to about 7.5 for the first pregnancy and not at all for the second. About six weeks post partum I had flair ups and eventually ended up at 30mg a day after the second pregnancy. The effects of pregnancy are most pronounced after the birth. For many, symptoms improve during pregnancy. However the flair up after can be quite severe and for me long lasting. I am still on 30 mg of prednisone plus 15mg Methotrexate, Arava and now Humira 3 years after my last pregnancy. I tried Enbrel and Kineret previously. Prednisone is a nasty drug but it is the only thing that keeps me functioning. To me it was worth it, but I am definately not planning to get pregnant again. I have much milder symptoms than most of you in the group. But am mostly affected in my wrists and hands, some knees. I was taking Sulfazine and Dicoflenac. It was helping along with a cortisone shot in one wrist. However, I went to my OB/GYN and discussed pregnancy. She said that I HAVE to go off the meds while trying to conceive. These are dangerous to the fetus. Now I'm uncomfortable w/out the meds and concerned that without the Sulfazine the disease is progressing while I'm trying to conceive. Anyone else going through this or know anyone that is? Any idea what I can do while off the meds? Also, wondering if some of you with more severe disease had any signs of this when you were younger? I'm concerned about the progression and disability in the future.Glad to have found this group too!
Guest guest
Jill, I asked my Rheumatologist about if I were to get pregnant what would likely happen...medication, symptoms, etc. He said I would be immediately taken off of Methotrexate & Plaquenil (I also take Medrol, Naproxen, & Darvocet). I am taking the necessary precautions to not get pregnant (I'm taking Alesse). I had a miscarriage two and a half years ago (my first pregnancy) and then six months after that, I was diagnosed with RA. I have endured such excruciating pain from the RA ( & at times I get a bad flare up), that I would be afraid that if I had a baby, I couldn't give my baby the proper care. There are some days that I can't even use my hands or I have to walk with a cane.
