Dust mites, pet dander, molds, and pollen are common indoor allergens that can

trigger allergy symptoms in sensitive people. These allergens can be found

everywhere, but certain decorating styles can make them more likely to thrive.

For example, dust mites and pet dander tend to congregate where there is more

fabric and clutter. Molds grow in humid places, such as in plant soil or in

carpeting in bathrooms. And pollen is released from flowers around the house. If

you are looking to reduce the amount of allergens in your home, kick off your

spring cleaning by looking at each room in your house and determining what

changes could make the room less hospitable to allergens.

Allergy-Reducing Decorating Tips: Living Room and Family Room

Reduce the number of dust-collecting objects that are sitting on your coffee

table, side tables, and mantle. And, if you're planning to buy new upholstered

furniture, choose leather upholstery, which can be easily wiped down, over

fabric to reduce dust mites. Keep as few objects as possible on solid surfaces,

such as nightstands or bureaus.

a.. If possible, don't use bedspreads or quilts, which can harbor dust mites.

a.. Avoid keeping flowers by the bed, since the pollen they contain can trigger

an allergic reaction.

a.. Clean out bureaus and closets so that you can store dust-collecting items,

like toys or books, away.

a.. In children's bedrooms, make a place for toys in a closet or chest when they

are not in use, and take stuffed animals off of the bed.

a.. Choose solid surface headboards instead of upholstered ones.

a.. Buy beds that have a slatted base so your mattress and/or box spring can

breathe.
