Thanks

I'll have to check it out... I find using a neti pot

makes me lightheaded and gives me earache, even when I

do a proper drying procedure.

Oh, by the way, when I started using a neti pot, I

found this site

www.jalanetipot.com

It gives excellent comprehensive instructions and

trouble shooting guide etc.

Hmm.. that's strange.. if you figure it out, let me know. I'll look

at the troubleshooting tips on the CDROM and see if they mention

anything about that.

They mention various types of slight discomforts and say you

basically just have to keep doing it and your body will adjust, but

that for most people it's a pleasant experience.

They even show kids doing it and smiling!

Thanks Jo! I've just started to research this to any degree.. not

that it requires so much research, but the more I read, the less

skittish I'm getting :-)

I've been worried about catching a cold or flu, so

I've used it a couple of times lately. It makes me

sneeze badly afterwards (sneezed 20 odd times last

night) as it makes my nose very sensitive. I also

hawk up phlegm for about 2 hours afterwards too!

Pleasant huh??? However, no cold yet, so it's worth

the suffering once in a while

Jo,

That website was terrific, BTW, www.jalanetipot.com. I haven't come

across anything else that might explain the discomfort you get.. But

it sounds like a better deal to me, hawking up phlegm and getting rid

of it in one fell swoop, than going around for days with a cold.

Maybe the neti treatment triggers more detox than we're used to,

especially since most of us haven't been doing it every day for years

like my Indian friends do!

Just got my pot yesterday, so I'm gonna start it.. any day now, hehe.

I'm a little disappointed in the one I got, the " rhino horn " , the

plastic one that was cheapest. The stainless steel one looks better

made.

Del,

You can share one neti pot if necessary, by rinsing it with boiling water

in between uses. The video shows a 60-ish man doing it with ease, and then

an 8 or 9 yr old child doing it and smiling! The kid convinced me, since I

didn't think this kid was an actor :-)

Take care,

I have a 4.5 year old who could benefit from neti-ing, but I don't

think we're going to convince her to do it yet! Also, for kids I

would make sure the salt solution is very, very light. For myself,

sometimes if I am in a bad way I will increase the salt solution to

the burn point, but it is highly effective!

I have made goldenseal-salt solutions for my husband to neti with

when he has a sinus infection. When he is in a hurry he will put

this solution in an eyedropper glass bottle, and take it with him,

every hour or so tilting his head back and putting a dropperful in,

snorting it up, then blowing his nose as needed. But as a practice

the eyedropper technique is not a substitute for the neti pot.

Apparantly Indigenous folks in our region used to snort salt water

for hayfever relief. Personally I'd rather neti! The neti is

pretty easy to use once you try it, you quickly get the hang of it.

My husband just did the neti pot! It worked like a charm! His ears and

sinuses cleared up immediately! Hooray for the neti pot and all that

share their experience with it! I have an 11 year old grandson that

needs it too but I don't think I will get him to do it either. That's

why I ordered the video. I am hoping that will convince him and the

rest of my family to do it (including me).

Yay!! Thanks for letting us know.. the testimonials help. Maybe if your

grandson sees the kid in the video doing it so easily and pleasantly, he'll

catch on.

My 9-year old loves it, usually. Says it makes her head feel good.

However, when she has sinusitis it stings a bit, then she

doesn't like it (right when she needs it!).

You want the salt water at the " isometric " point ... that is, when it is the

same

as your blood saline. Otherwise it will sting.

Re: the salt mixture--I know the isometric middle ground is recommended, and

my personal experience with persistent tough congestion from a very impacted

sinus infection was that I had to use a higher salt level to get any

movement! (Even more frequent use of the neti at the normal recommendation

salt/water ratio did nothing.) And yes, it definitely stung, but the

results were worth it--this might be a good desperation measure, but I

wouldn't recommend it as a regular daily practice!

Suze, I use (and really find easy and comfortable) a " Rhino Horn " made by the

Neti Pot Company. I had tried a few others previous to this one and never found

that I could get it tipped right/angled right so that the solution would run out

the other nostril and not down my throat. The Rhino Horn neti pot helps me get

a better clean... paid about $12 for it

Heidi,

I want to get a neti pot, but am not sure what to look for as far as what

it's made of. What do you recommend? I saw a ceramic one at my local HFS the

other day, but couldn't imagine the spout fitting up my nostril - it looked

too wide. I also wondered if the glaze might erode if I use salt...

So, are you finding that 3 drops of tea tree oil plus 1 tsp. salt works best

for you? I want to start before my first amalgam removal appt. in the next

few weeks so that I'll be able to breathe clearly out of my nose while the

dentist is working on my mouth. I'm trying to diminish the chance of sucking

the mercury vapors down my mouth.

Hey Suze,

with my last cold I got brave enough and bought a neti pot. Very

interesting this topic comes up right now, as I developed cold

symptoms yesterday. I had a sore throat for the day and by today, I'm

producing LOTS of mucus.

Definitely too early for another cold! The cold water was what it

started, I think, drinking very fast.

Well, You don't put the spout *into* your nostril. You put it onto

your nostril so that the water will flow into the nostril and not

drip. The salt is most important as is the temperature of the water

you use. If the water is warm and salty, it's like your blood and it

will feel fine. If the water isn't salted or cold, it will feel like

when you got water up your nose in a swimming pool, YUCK!

I got my neti pot at a pharmacy and the person who sold it, helped me

a lot. I really like this pharmacy. I go there and ask questions and

when they can't answer them right away, they open the packages and go

through the instructions with me, or just try the thing out. So mine

looks rather medical and not yoga-like :) I would prefer a bigger one

to a smaller one, because the beginning is not feeling so good. When

the water is flowing, everything is fine. So, if you had to start over

and over with just 1 nostril, that wouldn't be so good. My neti pot

holds 1 cup. When my nose is getting better already, that is enough

for both nostrils. But for a good cleansing at the beginning, I would

use that for 1.

I haven't tried TTO, but thought about it, as I'm pretty p*** that I'm

having a cold again, already! Kefir whey sounds good, too, I imagine

that would fight some bad germs in the nose. It's also cheaper than

buying the salt :) (I use the salt that company sells in tiny packages

each for the 1 cup filling of the pot. Tried normal sea salt once and

it was YUCK. May have been that the water wasn't warm enogh, but I'm

not in the mood to risk that again, ugh.

I liked to use it in the morning and the evening, every time to get my

nose free to breathe :)

Hi Suze

I use a copper neti pot - it works very well. SOmetimes I find the

balance of water, temp and salt is hard to get right.

I use it when I feel a cold coming on, or if for some reason I feel

blocked. If I use it too often it makes me light headed and my ears

feel funny! So I've not been able to use it to treat my dark circles

under my eyes, but it does work wonders for colds!

The site www.jalaneti.com gives excellent usage information.

The spout doesn't actually go up the nostril. It just covers the opening of the

nostril. : -)

I have a plastic neti that is made in Germany that I like quite well.

It is well made and looks like a piece of medical equipement.

It has a smallish opening in the spout.

It's called Prof. Schmidt's Jala-Neti and comes with a measuring scoop to

measure the salt.

I paid $16 Canadian for it from here:

http://www.yogaessentials.com/Product%20Pages/netipots.htm

www.profschmidts.de is the German language home page.

Tug, very, very good idea, you can even make your own solution, I use distilled

water and regular canning salt found in the canning section of the grocery

store. when you first start, it well burn, probaly, but dont let that stop you.

you may hear other idea's on what to use.

warning! some of those saline solutions you buy in the store may have some kind

of perfume/scented added, dont use those. best to make your own. a small pinch

of salt per netti pot or around a 1/8th cup per gallon of distilled water. you

may hear some other ideas of what to use. I use a little baking soda some times.

Vaseline is a petroleum product. That just does not sound like a good idea at

all, especially if you have MCS. D

Kay use to make this night cream but it was made from bear fat, so with

aminal rights, they no longer make it.

they also had a oatmeal mask that you could probably make something close to

yourself. I guess now days we have to pick from the lesser of evil supplies

avalable to us. I once knew a old man that claimed he could cure anything with

his herbal concoctions, wish I had payed more attn. now. but I do know his main

substance in some were

vasoline and cold cream.

amount of vasoline on a Q-tex tip just a little into the nose, and do it when I

was going to be upright all day.  Works good, I also put it on the outside of

the nose when it gets sore from handkerchiefs.
