Re: autism: sex as a therapy

If this is a valid concern on behalf of a parent, I can sympathize.

However, if your son rarely makes eye contact with people, I think that sexual

contact would be one of the last skills I would teach him. In terms of

masturbation, there are ways to confine that behavior to certain times, or

settings when

it would be appropriate- by doing it in private. Sexual intercourse can

result in pregnancy. It sounds like your son would most likely not be able to

contribute to raising a child or taking precautions by using birth control

techniques. The " sex therapy " that you are referring to would most likely only

contribute to more difficult behavior. Try training more functional and

lifelong skills that will allow your son to be independent. Establish control

over

the masturbation-stimulus control. Teach him alternative skills that are

stimulating and pleasurable. Also, a word of caution, you may want to curtail

or stipulate clearly exactly what your are talking about when referring to

sex. As individuals with disabilities are a protected population, laws are in

place to ensure that their civil rights and liberties are protected. Your

question comes across as rather bazzar and could warrant further investigation.

As a father, I would hope that you have had access to and researched enough

information to make a different choice for therapy.

If this is a serious question, the answer

is no. However, Jerry Newport wrote a book about the sexual experience

for autistic individuals that you can find on any web site selling books

about autism.

As listowner of Texas Autism Advocacy and parent of a child with autism - I'm

not sure what your intention is with that very vague question. Especially since

you are talking about individuals who are, on this list, mainly children or

young adults - in which case I can think of no reason for you to even be asking

that question. Actually, I can't think of any situation in which that question

would be appropriate in referring to individuals with disabilties.

Please e-mail me off list to clarify.

my previous question was perhaps not clear

let me try to clarify it

my son, autist, 23 years old, is a " fanatic " of masturbation (some

days he can ejaculate 10 times or more)

he also looks at some (nice) girls in a way that suggests that he

would easily " fall in love " with them (he usually does not look at

all at people)

he has hever had any sexual intercourse with anybody in his life

thence my previous question

another way of asking it would be: wouldn't it be good for my son if

he could have sex with a girl of his taste? couldn't sexual

intercourses help him " go outside of himself " ? has anyone here heard

of, or has any experience in, sex as a therapeutic tool in autism?

I have heard of swimming with dolphins, sleeping with bats, but sex... Give

me a break. There is a reason why some folks go running the other direction

when we say that we want to talk about autism!!!!

Please don't give the professional community any more reason to peg " us " as

a bunch of loons without any credibility!! Excuse me if I offended anyone.

When I lived in GA, on our georgia-autism list we had someone post something

almost similar. I think there are some sick people out there that just like to

Hi ph:

I would recommend that you get a copy of " Autism - Asperger's and

Sexuality " by Jerry Newport, Newport and Bolick since it

contains some great advice that may be very helpful for a 23 yr old young

man.

You can get a copy from the Future Horizons website--

Maybe you are right, but I am not sure. Perhaps, what I have been

stronger in your country (particularly in the South) than in mine?

Notre souci n'est pas lié à la croyance religieuse. I don't think religion has

anything to do with it. Any parent of any religion or one that is not religious

would have some alarms go off when you speak about children or young people with

disabilities becoming sexually active.
