Guest guest
Pat - see Dr. Furman's response - Since I have been doing this, however, I have found CLLers coming up with all sorts of other things - As Dr. Furman says, there is no specific tie-in However, ask yourself: what is a cancer? Two things have to happen for you to get a cancer. First, there has to be some sort of mutation, something has to go wrong. Normally, we all have these frequently, and nothing comes of them. Why? Because the body's immune system conquers the mutation. Now, if you have a messed up immune system, or if the immune system is unable to get rid of the anomaly, you get a cancer. In my book, although it has not been shown, that says that we, who are immune compromised, should be in a less good position to fight off other and new anomalies produced within the body. Just my theory...... Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home.
Guest guest
Skin cancers are probably the only ones that are significantly to be an issue in CLL patients, but when you are looking a large number of patients over a long period of time there is a statistically increase risk of other solid tumors as well. (I am excluding secondary leukemias which do occur in anyone who has received chemotherapy, but these are also very infrequent.) These differences translate into a very small difference. There is also a connection between prostate cancer and CLL, but I suspect this is mostly because of CLL being found incidenctally at the time of prostatectomy in lymph nodes around the prostate. Prostate cancers are coommon, so overlap is expected if one looks close enough. Guest guest
I had surgery for lung cancer this winter. A friend of mine is now facing kidney surgery. Sorry to bring such bad news. Ct-scans are very useful in sighting the other cancers, and PET-scans confirm the sighting. Guest guest
I have a question. Does having CML make us more likely to get a different cancer as well? Blessings, Jo-Dee
Guest guest
My dermatologist once told me that this was true. She said that I had to be careful for skin cancer - I asked whether it was because of Glivec & pigmentation, she replied that having CML in general made other cancers more likely. The positive side of this is that since we ofetn have to see our doctors & because we're aware of what's going on in our bodies that any other medical problems would be picked up on quickly, best wishes, Barbara >
Guest guest
Hi Jo-Dee, This abstract deals with this very topic: http://ash.confex.com/ash/2008/webprogram/Paper10039.html I'm happy to report that there does not seem to be a significant increase in secondary cancers for those of us on Gleevec long term. After analyzing the charts of 1647 patients, they found that only 4% of patient developed a second cancer with the median age of these patients being 67 and the most common second cancer being non- melanoma skin cancer. I personally don't find these findings to be disturbing and surmise that similar numbers (if not greater numbers) can be found in the general population. This is great news for those of us who are looking at a the prospect of being on Gleevec for the rest of our lives. Tracey > > I have a question. Guest guest
I once joked to my doc that I felt " immunized " by having CML, having paid my " cancer dues, " so to speak. She said actually people with one kind of cancer tend to be susceptible to others. That sobered me up in a hurry! From: tuskarawaz64@... Guest guest
Hi Sue, I just checked your membership and your setting was set to receive the individual emails instead of the daily digest. I just changed it back so you should start receiving the daily digest tomorrow. Let me know if you still have problems. Tracey > > > > I have a question.
