Hi Everyone,

I thought this article in our newspaper yesterday was very interesting and

may one day lead to opening the " cell door " of the quiescent CML cells to

kill them off and perhaps effect a " cure " ?

TROJANS OUTSMART TUMOURS

Sydney scientists have made a world breakthrough in the treatment of drug

resistant cancer cells. Working out of a suburban laboratory, the scientists

have perfected a " Trojan Horse " therapy to destroy tumour cells that are the

biggest killers of long term cancer patients.

Their research, which involves sending bacterially derived nanocells into

rogue cancer cells in two separate waves - will be published in the July

issue of Nature Biotechnology journal.

The Herald Sun can reveal the first human clinical trials involving 20 long

term cancer patients start within weeks. The process based on nanosized

particles called EDV's, follows 5 years research by Himanshu Brahmbhatt and

MacDiarmid at their biotech company, EnGeneIC.

Like a Trojan Horse, the EDV's (EnGeneIC Delivery Vehicle) arrived at the

gates of affected cells and were allowed in, the pair explained in a

statement yesterday. " We are playing the rouge cells at their own game. They

switch on the gene to produce the protein to resist drugs, and we are

switching off the gene, which, in turn, enables the drugs to enter " , they

said.

The Chairman of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation's medical research

advisory committee, Ian Fraser, said the findings were a significant

breakthrough. " It is a chance to make existing drugs far more effective " , he

said.

Herald Sun, Monday 29 June 2009.
