Guest guest
Leg cramps are common. I viewed it as the Gleevec was holding back the progress of the Leukemia. Later, I just began drinking plenty of water and now, I don't have any pain, oh on occassion it returns for a few hours but that's when I realize that I haven't been drinking enough fluids. Try that. Guest guest
HI, AM NO LONGER ON GLEEVEC, BUT REMEMBER WELL THE LEG OR TOE CRAMPS. I DON;T RECALL BEING ABLE TO DO TOO MUCH ABOUT IT. SOME DRINK TONIC ( I PUT VODKA IN MINE, AND AM ABOUT TO HAVE ONE NOW, WITH LIME, NOT SURE WHAT MAKES IT WORK, THE TONIC, THE LIME OR THE VODKA) I HAD A FRIEND WHO PRACTICED REIKE (SP). SHE TOLD ME TO PRESS ON MY UPPER LIP, IT WAS A PRESSURE POINT, AND WOULD RELIEVE THE PAIN. I GET THEM ON ARIAD NOW, BUT ONLY IF I WAKE UP AND STRETCH, WHICH IS QUITE NORMAL, SO I HAVE TO REMEMBER, DON'T STRETCH. WHEN I DO GET ONE, I JUMP FLY OF BED AND JUMP UP AND DOWN AND SCREAM AND SWEAR, DOES NOT HELP MUCH, BUT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER. GOOD LUCK AND REMEMBER, IF ALL ELSE FAILS try the tonic, my way!! Guest guest
Some people put a bar of soap in the bed for leg cramps. On gleevec I had leg cramps and never found the magic bullet but soap in the bed sometimes seemed to work. Guest guest
I was diagnosed in 2003 and I had leg and foot cramps most of the time until the fall of 2008. We tried the iron infusions, iron supplements, quinine, potasium, and nothing seemed to help. My diagnoses included iron defiecency anemia and finally the 400mg of Gleevec was causing my RBC to fall and I required transfusions and finally took Procrit. When my RBC reached 11 I no longer had leg cramps. While I have been on a Gleevec vacation for 24 months I am anxious to see my next CBC+Dif in 2 weeks as I am experiencing some minor foot cramps when I sleep. I will also send off my RT-PCR so I will have the results by the end of the month. The bar of soap did provide some relief but it was only a temporary solution. Guest guest
I was diagnose with CML April 2007. The side effects were never intolerable but they were more intense earlier on than later. Among those side effects were leg cramps. The leg cramps became less severe as time went. Besides what others have mentioned as cause of this and remedy for it, I would add that ;proper nutrition is probably a factor. I am a sugarholic, and I find that when I am on a " sugar " binge, the cramps tend to be more prevalent and more intense. Excess sugar does tend to dehydrate one, I think, so that plays into it, too, I imagine. But when I stay away from sweets and eat right generally, the cramps are not nearly the problem they are otherwise. Just thought I mentioned that from my experience. Drink fluids, stay away from diuretic foods (like caffeine and sugar), and generally eat right is the rule for me to follow. Unfortunately, the flesh is weak sometimes, and the Homer Simpsons in me cannot be repressed. Guest guest
Hi Karyn, Glad to hear that you are doing well on Gleevec. I've been on 400mg for almost 3 years and leg and foot cramps continue to bother me but not to the extent that they used to. What seems to help for me is to take 1500mg of calcium (500mg three times a day). This was suggested to me by Carolyn Blasdel, Dr. Druker's research nurse. If I forget to take the full 1500mg (while on vacation, for instance), I get excruciating leg cramps. Guest guest
Well, I've been on Gleevec since February, 2001 and have had to deal with leg, feet, and hand cramps on many occasions--mostly at night. My doctor finally prescribed Tizanidine HCL (Zanaflex)-4MG, once a day I take it at bedtime. That has reduced the severity of and the frequency of the cramping. Tizanidine HCL is a generic form of Zanaflex and isn't very expensive. Others, like Bobby Doyle, have used tonic water but I found that it took several bottles to fill the bath tub and a huge amount of gin to make the cramps go away. Bobby uses vodka--I think intraveniously. Bob , Granger, Indiana > > Hello Everyone- > Ive been on Gleevec for 13 months now and have tolerated it fairly well. Guest guest
Margaret, My dad has gone from 400 to 300 to 200. It is too early to tell if this will hold but it did help with the side effects. His doc here in GA made that decision. His doc in TX said he would not recommend it and he would have taken him off Gleevec if the side effects were not tolerable and put him on something else. In other words in TX they don't adjust dosage they adjust meds. But he said if it is working he could continue and to call if it stopped working. Guest guest
Matt, you're absolutely right about the massages! My daughter is a massage therapist, and while she was going to school, the school offered discount massages and sometimes free ones for their grading periods. I know that when I don't drink enough water, it affects me, as well as when I skip my banana at breakfast time. Can I ask you why you went from Gleevec to Tasigna, instead of Sprycel next? Sincerely, ________________________________ From: " mtmaynor@... I did not want anything to alleviate them, but I did want him to validate that I was having issues. And while he was my good friend, I finally had to find another doctor who did care about my QOL other than just " grin and bear it " . As for leg cramps, I have always found that heating pads and hot soaking tubs would help me. It also helps if you have a massage therapist or even a good friend try to massage your legs and stretch them. If cost is an issue, you can sometimes go to massage therapy classes where they need willing subjects, which I have done on several occasions. Tonic water, salt tablets and other items have always been suggested, but good stretching and warm heat are what has worked best for me. I hope you sleep well tonight. Guest guest
I don't have an answer for the length of my vacation. I have tested postive, but that has remained at less than .1 since Jan. I had to have a pacemaker put in in March and since that time it has declined own its own. Maybe the increased blood flow is helping me to cleanse the body, but that is a pure guess. There are a couple of people that take 300mg, that being 200mg one day and 400mg the next day. They were having trouble tolerating Gleevec and this was the level that they needed to be at to make everything work properly for their case. Guest guest
You might want to check with your primary care Physican to see if he thinks the pain might be caused by ostio-artheritis. I found my all of my syblings has it and while my pain has lessened I have found that like my grandmother (she had rumitoid-artheritis) that the lows will require me to head for the ibeprofin. This has been a terrible year in the midwest as the fronts are coming thru every 3-4 days and the pain flucates with them. I also think I read or heard that CML can also increase the ostio-artheritis. H. > > I have had cramping and aching for months now but my Dr says that the Gleevec has nothing to do with them. Maybe it don't but they don't care enough to find out why I have such horrible pain...I ache from my neck to my toes and most of the time it is severe pain. Now the general Dr that I went to once says that he wants to take me off the pain meds, xanax and zoloft. I ran out of the zoloft and haven't had the money to get it refilled and I am almost out of the pain med..God forbid when I run completely out and also almost out of the xanax so I will probably be a real witch once I run out of all of it. The pain is the worst and it really scares me to think that I won't have anything to help with it but HE is the Dr so I guess HE knows what he's talking about. Guest guest
Dear Cmler2, I recently had some herrific leg cramps which included the feet, all the way up to the hips, while I slept in the evening. I called my Acupuncturist who is also a Medical Physician and she told me that leg cramps are due to the lack of Calcium Glycinate-Chelate 200mgs./Magnesium Glycinate Citrate 170 mgs. Can you imagine waking up, to severe leg, foot and body cramps, and having to drink more bottle water and consuming banana's? For some odd reasons I forgot to take my calicium/magnesium for a couple of nights, and suddenly the leg cramps came back to haunt me! I now take 3 after lunch, and 3 before bedtime. They are all capsules, since I have a very difficult time consuming hard pills. Hope this helps anyone who is having body cramps! I purchased my supplies from a Chiropracter. Or go onto this web-site: www.OrthoMolecularProduct.com. Hope everyone is doing GREAT!!!Dory Doggie ________________________________ From: " perryandlori@... Guest guest
Ted, I do agree with you to some extend that diet does play a very strong role with Gleevec! Be beware of sugar, because it helps cancer cells to grow!
