The problem might be ligaments/muscles as the chiro says; it could be a nerve or hernia as the GP says; it could _also_ or _instead_ be something inside your hip joint like osteoarthritis, the PA, avascular necrosis -- AVN is a possibility if you've taken steroids, like prednisone -- or some other thing going on that's eating away at your cartilage/destroying bone and causing the pain. Groin pain is common to people who need hip replacements, for example (although I had a hip replaced and never had any groin pain -- I'm an odd duck!). Hip pain that radiates is not uncommon either, and can affect your knees and also your back, to the extent that the real problem -- in the hip -- is totally masked in some individuals. It might even be a really bad case of bursitis. (Have you tried applying ice and heat, alternately for about 20 min. each? See if that helps?) --Louise

Guest guest
Louise, Thanks so much for all of that info. It sure gives me a lot to look into. I am getting an xray done next week then will take the next step. I appreciate your advice and help. Hope you have a good day! Guest guest
Hi Judy, You describe so clearly what I've been experiencing the last six months! We finally have insurance (thanks to our eldest son paying the premiums), so I've been able to see the doctor again. He ordered x-rays of my spine (they took about 16!) and gave me a referral to a rheumy. Although we don't have the report on those x-rays, I'm convinced that all this pain and discomfort stems from the whole pelvic-hip-lower back area being compromised by PA. There are times when it feels like the hips are getting loose in their sockets. Then there are times when the supporting tissues in the front of the hips are being over- stretched - a totally new feeling for me. The pain moves from one hip to the other, from the front to the back or middle. > ... I have terrible hip pain in my > right hip and just recently ... have had bad > groin pain on the same side. My chiro says it is the > ligaments and muscles and my GP says it could be a > nerve or a hernia Personally, it sounds like they each have only a portion of the whole picture. > ... It seems to radiate sometimes down > my leg to my feet. Do you ever have problems straightening out the backs of your knees after sitting for awhile? After I stand up, I have to wait a few seconds before walking; the more I walk, the better it gets to a point. > It seems all to go along the inside > of my leg Now I haven't had that one ... yet, but sometimes it goes down my shin. > to the inside soles of my feet. Mine varies from one side to the other but much of my problem around my feet begin in the ankle, the joints behind my toes and then one toe on each foot has become the classic " sausage toe " with swelling and redness. > Also does anyone have bad inner knee pain? Oh yes!! Especially the right knee but very little swelling. > PS Thanks so much for having this board. It is so > great having people who are in the same boat who care > and can share experiences. Ditto on those sentiments. Although I haven't posted to the list for awhile, I've tried to keep up with what's happening here and on the forum. Guest guest
I've read of other men on other groups/boards with this problem. For that matter, my almost 14 yr old Son has had the same problem for about 4 yrs now. A testicular ultrasound was " normal " . Nothing has ever been found as to why this occurs for him...other than the Lyme. Guest guest
Hi Carmel, It was two types of local anesthetic, a short acting one, and a long acting one. I think the idea is to remove the pain so I start moving the muscles properly. I'm always a bit worried with these proceedures though, sometimes infections can be introduced this way. Guest guest
Hi Ruth, It seems the more exercising I do the more that area hurts and I have mentioned it several times to my PT. She keeps saying it's a muscle that hasn't been used. I don't see my OS until June. I do start water therapy next week too so hopefully that will help. I am seeing a noticeable improvement in my walking even in the last few weeks which in encouraging. But walking too much hurts even after twenty minutes. Guest guest
Hi Carmel To my bests recollection, the exercise that relieved the groin pain was this: Stand erect with hand on a counter or chair back for balance. Move the effected leg to and side about 18 inches and move it back to position. Do this 15 times, rest a minute of so and do it 15 more times. Don't rush it. I recall thinking my PT was my enemy when I was exhausted after 15 times and she would say, " Good. Now do it 15 more times. " Of course it was exactly what I needed and I am grateful. These hurtful activities are exactly what we need to enjoy wellness later. At hospital rehab we were told to be sure to take pain med before each session and take meds afterward as needed. I relied on viacolin(SP?) for the first few weeks, the switched to Tylenol for arthritis. I am 77, 6 months post op and so glad to have my life back. I still have little aches and do a few leg lift for maintenace. Tylenol comes in handy too. I walk without a limp or aid. I do twice a week pool exercise and walk 30 minutes a day. Hope this helps. Thanks to all of you for your posts. You are my support community. Another exercise I was told to do by my PT is laying on the tummy and lifting the leg out straight but not too high. Guest guest
before i ever would have thought that i needed a hip replacement my pain started the same way. i was laid off from regular job, it was very slow and was a very good time to give my lungs a break from the bodyshop. my wife worked in a flooring store and a couple of the guys asked if i wanted to go out on some jobsites and give them a hand. i thought what the heck and went to see what it was all about. (flashback) for between 6-8 years my health had been going backwards. i started having upper respiratory infections that were harder and harder to get over. i had pneumonia then double pneumonia twice finally the damage ended up at occupational asthma. back to the layoff.............. i was doing everything like normal even bowling one or two nights a week and rollerskating when i wanted. then i developed what i thought was a pulled groin muscle. if i was on my feet a lot during the week by friday i could hardly walk. over the weekend i would be quite lazy and come monday i could start over. after a couple months of this i decided to go to the chiropractor and have him look at my lower back and hip plus try a therapeutic message to loosen up the pulled muscle. after looking at the x-rays he decided that i needed to go to my md. because there was something in the film that a 35yr old should not have. the md. ordered more x-rays,an mri, and a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. this o.s. called for a bone scan,a cane to walk with and a referral to other dr.s who did fibular grafts, trying to save the dying hip of a 35yr old. my other hip has quite a bit of arthritic changes and every now and then the groin starts to ache, plus it "catches" so i know what is happening in there
