Guest guest
Hi all. Everyone here knows where I stand on the prospects of health insurance reform and a public option for those who cannot afford to buy their own policy. In case you have forgotten, I am all in favor of it. No, I don't think it will be perfect and Yes I am sure it will need to be changed and improved. And, NO I am not advocating a plan like the have in the UK and Canada. All that aside. The high cost of health care is already here! It may surprise you to know that people in different cities pay much more or much less for health care than you pay. In some cities the cost is more than twice per person than in other cities AND the quality is no better! I came across this excellent article in the June 1, 2009, " New Yorker " about one of those cities whose cost is totally out of control. I highly recommend that you read this article and the follow-up article published a week later. - June 1 " The Cost Conundrum " <http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande?p\ rintable=true> http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande?printable=tr\ ue - June 8 " The Cost Conundrum Redux " <http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2009/06/atul-gawande-the-c\ ost-conundrum-redux.html> http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2009/06/atul-gawande-the-cost-con\ undrum-redux.html No matter where you stand on the current health care debate you will find these articles and the author's findings to be important. You may not agree with his suggestions but his definition of the problems is really good and clear. Troxel

Guest guest
The author of the following was on NPR recently. He undertook a study of a number of the healthcare systems of modern democracy, including Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, and Taiwan. Taiwan fifteen years ago was about the 150th largest economy. It is now the 25th or something like that, and both liberals AND conservatives decided that a first-class economy owed its citizens a first-class healthcare. (Boggles the mind, doesn't it?) Each system has problems, but our problems is we have engrafted all the problems of the systems without many of the benefits, and we do it wasfefully at tremendous cost. http://www.amazon.com/Healing-America-Global-Better-Cheaper/dp/1594202346 From: Troxel <richard.troxel@...> Subject: [ ] The high cost of health care in America Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009, 5:03 PM Hi all.
