Well last night had yet another reaction that was the same only this time it definitely wasn’t the swine flu vaccine. Had to call an ambulance but fortunately not to hospital as they were able to stabilize me at home, apparently according to them I was only just hyperventilating. Strange but where does the rash and swelling come in with this? Also the ambulance guys said they’d never heard of Samters either, no real surprise there. Doctor didn’t open until 10.30, hence the ambulance call but got in to see him at 2 – the same one who said it was a swine flu reaction. He said I’d had a bad reaction to something I ate – as far as I know I have no food allergies. Now what’s blown me away is that if it was that bad, why hasn’t he ordered tests to find out what particular food it is I’m allergic to? Unfortunately ate out at an ‘all you can eat’ restaurant last night that had a huge variety which will make it difficult to narrow down but I’ve eaten there plenty of times before. As far as I know the only thing that sets me off is aspirin. Back to the drawing board for me. Guest guest
Yes there was shellfish but I’ve had them many times before and even for dinner last night had some freshly caught ones without any reaction at all. I live in a seaside village and often eat them as they’re always freshly caught. I’ll be contacting my GP today to arrange some allergy testing. Guest guest
Just as an aside, carrageenans found a place in the 1979 movie "Alien". The thick, gooey saliva dripping out of the aliens mouth was thickened by copious amounts of carrageenan mixed into K-Y Jelly. I just threw out my Soy Milk. In a message dated 1/7/2010 8:53:10 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time, stuffyintexas@... writes: Most ice creams are loaded with carrageenans, especially Ben and Jerry's. The only major brand that does not use them is Hagendaas. Some sour creams and cream cheeses contain them, as well as some of the jellies in foods. It's real easy to determine by looking at the labels, but in restaurants, it's best to avoid foods that may contain them. After you read the labels on every food you buy, you'll see that some brands contain them, and some don't. Carrageenans are derived from seaweed and are used to cheaply thicken foods, especially those that have the fat taken out. It was even in my favorite drink - Silk Soy Milk, which turned out to be the poison I drank every day! :)What helped my allergist narrow this down was when I kept track of everything I ate over a 4 month period, when I ate it, and when I had serious reactions. Turned out the common denominator was ice cream eaten almost 18 hours prior. So he tested me for milk/dairy allergies (again), and it was negative. He told me about another patient he had that had the same reactions to ice cream and lipstick, and it turned out to be an allergy to carrageenans. He said there was a relatively new test out for that, and that my blood would have to be sent to some lab in the US to get tested, and that took 3 weeks.Unfortunately there's not much info out there on carrageenans, but from what I've been able to research, they may get into the blood stream thru a damaged lining in the large intestine and destroys some of the immune defenses, which explains why the reactions are delayed by 12-18 hours for me. I would get very bad asthma attacks in the middle of the night, or in the afternoon while sitting at work and not have eaten anything for the past 5-6 hours. It was driving me crazy. All the doctors said if it was a food allergy, the reaction would occur immediately or within minutes, not hours and hours later. That's why I was asking everyone on this board to try to avoid them (seems like everyone on here has tried salicylate free diets, low carb diets, etc). My symptoms didn't go away quickly, but I have been improving over the past several months, so I am positive it's due to avoiding foods with carrageenans.Best of luck to you. Hope you can get it narrowed down quickly> >> > Yes there was shellfish but I’ve had them many times before and even for dinner last night had some freshly caught ones without any reaction at all. Guest guest
Just curious....did you eat any ice cream, puddings, foods with cream cheese, sour cream, fruit jellies, etc? I had some similar reactions after eating such foods (especially ice cream) that cause severe asthma attacks 12-18 hours later. Sometimes got hives on my arms and legs too. I had tested negative to basic food allergies, but after almost 5 years of misery discovered it was the carrigeenans in certain foods that I was allergic to. There is a new IGe blood test out for that now. The only relief I got during those asthma attacks was to chew and swallow 2 benedryl tablets, and lie down until it kicked in. Then had to wait 2-3 days to get somewhat back to normal. What made it difficult to figure out what causing it was the delayed reaction after ingesting certain foods. I've been avoiding foods with carrigeenans now for the past 3 months, and have not had any more serious asthma reactions (after 5 years!), and have cut my advair use in half, and my sinuses are much better too. Stopped taking aspirin (after going thru de-sense) and Singular too. Good luck! Jack P.S. - I've been a paramedic for almost 20 years. I had never heard of Sampters or aspirin de-sense or anything like that, even after having it for 3 years. Emergency medical personnel are mainly trained to treat allergic reactions the same way - epinephrine, benadryl, and breathing treatments. Plus most of the doctors I've worked with or spoken to had never heard of it, and if they did, they knew little about it or had no experience with it. When I try to " educate " them a little, the look at me like I'm crazy. Only my allergist, kidney specialist, and blood specialist take me seriously. > > Yes there was shellfish but I’ve had them many times before and even for dinner last night had some freshly caught ones without any reaction at all. Guest guest
Now that’s a somewhat embarrassing question when you go to an ‘all you can eat’ restaurant haha. Yes I had ice cream, sour cream, jelly but no pudding or cream cheese. I often have cream cheese at home as well as jellies and sour cream too. I’ve made an appointment with my GP again for next week as I really want to find out what’s going on here. Yesterday he said it wasn’t asthma but hyperventilation of sorts as there was no wheezing yet I looked like something that should have been immediately quarantined. I don’t go near aspirin at all as it really sets me off but the odd thing is I can enjoy red wine without any problems. (not that I’m complaining about that though) Thanks Jack, and I’ll be sure to let everyone know the results when I finally get this sorted out. Living in regional Australia, things take time. The paramedics that came said they hadn’t heard of Samters but some other thing they called it started with an “R†but I wasn’t exactly listening too clearly at the time. That's why I was asking everyone on this board to try to avoid them (seems like everyone on here has tried salicylate free diets, low carb diets, etc). My symptoms didn't go away quickly, but I have been improving over the past several months, so I am positive it's due to avoiding foods with carrageenans. Best of luck to you. Hope you can get it narrowed down quickly > > > > Yes there was shellfish but I’ve had them many times before and even for dinner last night had some freshly caught ones without any reaction at all. Guest guest
I heard that the alien had Sampter's too! A good place to get a start on finding out what foods contain Carrageenans is http://www.foodfacts.com/ At the top of the page, you can search by key words, ingredients, etc. Click on " ingredients " and enter " carrageenan " On the left side of the page that comes up, you can refine your search by food types (breads, meats, drinks, etc). You will soon see what foods contain the poison. It's a pretty good site to start with. I don't think it contains all the food products, but it does have a lot. You'll probably find something on there that you eat almost every day. It's also good for looking up what contains MSG and sulfite, our other favourite poison. After a couple of weeks, you will be good at spotting what foods contain carrageenan, and will be able to spot them on the ingredients. Some brands do, and some don't. You won't really have to make too many sacrifices, just change brands. Also, look for anything that contains " agar " . Basically the same thing as carrageenan. Other thickeners such as xantham gum are OK. Something that surprised me was the flavoured coffee creamers I had been adding to my coffee each day. They use carrageenan to thicken the product. So that got eliminated too. Another product that contains carrigeenan is most toothpastes. However, since you don't eat it, they don't have to list it on their ingredients. You have to call their 1-800 number and ask them. I had to switch to a natural toothpaste as most others caused me to start wheezing a few minutes after brushing my teeth. It wasn't mint as I tried at least a dozen different brands and flavors, and they all did the same. Once I switched to a natural (no preservatives or other additives except for fluoride), those problems stopped. Doctor said it was because the area under the tongue absorbs some drugs and substances quickly, and they can get right into the bloodstream. Just like some drugs that are administered under the tongue. Hope you get some relief. Please keep us posted!
