don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the

throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple

gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same

effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't

underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti

(very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once

a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is

very effective in bringing down viral population.

liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash

off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot

survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Hi Lottie,

This information is so timely. Those of us with a chronic disease need to be

extra caution about trying to avoid any flu this season, and they are already

saying that it will be a high flu season.

Here are some of my suggestions about what the doctor wrote:

1. You can also gargle with fresh lemon juice, straight or in warm water. Lemon

is very anti-inflammatory.

A very good warm beverage to make and have on hand is lemon ginger tea (both are

anti-inflammatory). Ream a lemon and grate some fresh ginger into a pan, add

water and simmer.....make plenty and keep in the refrig to warm up at other

times during the day. This is great for sore throats, to prevent colds, etc.

2. And the big find the other day....Costco is now carrying a product I have

been using for some time (and when Costco carries it, it is cheaper). It is a

NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It is so much easier to use than a NETI pot which requires

head and neck gymnastics. This is a bottle syringe that you make a solution in

(packets provided) to rinse out your nostrils and sinus cavities....very easy to

do. The Costco kit has 2 syringes, so enough for 2 people, for about $15.

Hope some of you find this helpful. I know I will do whatever I can this season

to try to avoid the flu, and Don has showed us how easy it can happen.

C.

My daughter in Albany said that their Health Dept issued a message to all

children and adults. When washing your hands sing Happy Birthday to me 2x.

The Health Dept claims that this double washing is the best defense against

swine flu.

Now everybody sing.
