If he won't keep the helmet on there is nothing you can do. Kaitlyn is 17 months old and can't take her helmet off, thank goodness. Her Orthotist put extra Velcro so she couldn't. It's hard to explain but it is about an inch past where it should stop and in order to undo it she would have to be able to pinch the ends and pull, she can't just grab it at any spot and undo it. Does he even undo the Velcro when he takes his helmet off?

Giving up

Is it horrible that I am going to give up on doing the helmet? We went through everything getting it but he will not keep it on. It is a battle every day to keep this on. I don't know what to do. No one has any suggestions past the normal and those do not work. He is just so deteremined. I just don't know what to do with him being 14 months already.

Can the ortho add a strap that does under the chin that he can't remove?

I was thinking about that. Maybe we will have to look more into that.

Dear , If Sammy responds to a reward system you could try some of the methods parents use with potty learning. For example, if he likes stickers, you could set up a chart and let him place a sticker on it for each accomplishment related to the helmet. Start off with keeping the helmet on for a couple hours (during his nap-time), then work your way up to longer stretches of time. Or you could set up a prize basket with little items from a dollar store and he gets to choose something from the prize basket each time he wears the helmet for a pre-established length of time. Another suggestion is to wear a bike helmet yourself while he is wearing his helmet. I have an older son who is very persistent (not the one wearing the cranial remolding band), as a result, I have come up with a plethora of ways to motivate him to

cooperate with us. If you would like to talk further, my e-mail is mdrquinn@.... Good luck! I hope some of this helps. <mullin987@...> wrote: Is it horrible that I am going to give up on doing the helmet? We went through everything getting it but he will not keep it on. It is a

I don't think that the reward system will help becase he just would rather do his own thing. He is that determined. I will look at the helmet idea though.

PLEASE don't try this before you check with your Dr.!!! Have you

tried giving him some Benadryl and in about 20 minutes try putting

his helmet on, he should be sleepy enough by then to just lay down

and fall asleep. Children's Benadryl (Dye-Free Allergy Bubblegum

Liquid) contains Diphenhydramine HCl 12.5mg which is the active

ingredient in most over the counter sleep aides. I'm assuming that

he is approximately 20lbs(???)so he can have 1/2 teaspoonful from 10

to 20lbs and 1 teaspoonful if he is 21 to 30lbs of the liquid

Benadryl containing 12.5mg/5ml(teaspoonful). Obviously I wouldn't

do this for very long, maybe a couple of days or so until he gets

out of the habit of pulling it off. We use Benadryl for bone scans

because she has to remain still and we even used it during casting,

she was so sleepy that she could have cared less what they were

doing. We have been given the ok to use it from her physician for

medical procedures and we also use it on occasion to help her sleep

since she often has a difficult time sleeping at night. It is

relatively safe and the main side effect is drowsiness. Just a

thought... He will eventually concede to wearing the helmet it's

just a matter of patience and how determined he is not to wear it.

He obviously has a strong will which will take him far in life.

Good luck and I hope you are able to find a solution soon, for your

sake and his.

AGAIN, PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS BEFORE YOU CHECK WITH YOUR DR.!

Hi , It sounds a little like you have already given up...but, if your baby is that determined, I would think that determination trait came from you (or your husband). So, my suggestion is for you and your husband to be even more determined to keep the helmet on your baby. Do whatever it takes to keep trying. (Although my opinion is not to make your baby drowsy with benedryl) There were many great suggestions made to you in the past couple of days...if you don't think those ideas would work for your baby, then, think of other ways. You know your baby best and I'm sure you will figure it out. but, don't give up!!! Please don't think that I give my daughter Benadryl without careful consideration. Kaitlyn has a metabolic bone disease and if she squirms too much she can fracture. So, we gave the Benadryl during casting as a precaution for fractures. Better to be sleepy than broken! Also she has a lot of bone pain at night which causes her sleep disturbances so we can either give her narcotics or Benadryl. I choose the Benadryl as it has less side effects and as long as it is effective in helping her sleep through the pain I will continue to do so. That is why I urge anyone who considers Benadryl to consult with their Dr. first, sometimes Dr.'s do recommend it for a lot of different reasons and it proves very useful.

Hi Naomi, I apologize if I sounded like I was criticising... I wasn't. You have a perfectly good reason to give it to your daughter. No matter what, your opinions and suggestions are good and valid. • 2 years later...

I have decided that I am sick of all the quacks I have been seeing and I think I

know more than they do just from the group. Just because I can't afford

insurance, they think they can just screw me over and I am sick of it. Thanks

for all your support and be thankful for good doctors that really care and have

a heart!

Blessings to you all,
