Hey all,

I have a 77 male patient who has been taking 2 PSI from NF Formulas for about 6 or 7 years. It helps him tremendously with his pain. Well.....he has recently slowly developed gynecomastia, and his MD took him off the PSI saying the 150 mgm of Wild Yam it has is what has caused the estrogenic effect. Do you have any information/clinical experience with such????

Don,

Is he also on anti-depressants. I know any MD that recently had breast surgery for gynecomastia as a result of a anti-depressant use.

I’m wondering if soy products, taken

regularly, could also promote gynecomastia through their estrogen-like

activity.

Have not seen any gynecomastia from wild yam cream….one of my male study partners in chiro college did develop same when we were ginseng root for energy over a 4 month period. It reversed itself as soon as he discontinued the ginseng. Check to see what level of estrogen-carrying foods your patient consuming.

And I have just remembered that I didn't follow through with getting the food survey form out to all of you …. my apologies. It has to be taken to Kinko's to be put on a disc before I can get it to you;…. I WILL complete that this weekend. Sorry for the rudeness and delay, everyone.

In my research on soy products. the phytoestrogenic activity is low level enough that it would require a large

amount of consumption to be effective. In a previous post I spoke of a study partner who developed gynecomastia secondary to ginseng root consumption… we were 10 minutes away from China Town so would go down and get dried roots by the handful, slice them and suck on them like lozenges during class time…..we were going through 1 - 2 roots/day …. that, to me, is a large amount of consumption of that form. And, when we stopped that intake, his condition receded within about 2 months.

Don, have your patient stop the wild yam intake for a time before resorting to surgical removal….that would tell the tale.

Re: Fw: PSI

wild yam does have a slight estrogenic effectbut the question is why is he developing gynecomastia nowsomething else would have had to change to make him suddenly susceptible in this way...liver? hormone balance? cortisol?in any case, if the gynecomastia goes away pretty quicklygreat, no more wild yamif not, then he can go back on the psiand the doctor goes back to workthe good news is that it should be pretty easy to get him the ingredients in psiwithout the wild yamsimply exchanging the wild yam for another anti-spasmodic herbpsi is convenient but a custom tincture plus one well chosen supplement will do the job just as well:) Brody ND LAcOn Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 07:18 PM, Joyce McClure, D.C. wrote:

Hi Don,

For the average woman, 400 mg/month of wild yam is the usual dose so assuming your guy was using 150/day, it could certainly contribute to the gyneomastia. But, like Joyce says, just cut it out and the enlargements should be gone within a fairly quick bit of time.

Dear Amy,

Sounds like you are on a real roll. Yes, PSI is a good company, but only as

long as they receive contributions from wealthy donors. They are rated however,

to be the most transparent company in collaborating with the firms that do the

polls on adherence to the non-profits.

The others sometimes pay huge salaries to the CEO's, like Red Cross and I don't

contribute to those. They are extremely nice and helpful. They are giving my

husband his asthma meds, with a co-pay, we don't know how much, as the drug

store is handling it.

When those millions were donated for the victims of 9/11, they were going to

hold some of that money back for other catastrophes, which I believed to be

wrong. The money was donated to the victim's families, and no matter how much

they got, it was gifted for that purpose and it shouldn't be re-directed for

something else.

Keep on rolling along, sounds like you are all happy campers. Welcome to the

terrible twos. Kudos to you for persevering through all of this. He is the

best gift you could have received. Pay back time.

Hands & hearts,

Lottie Duthu
